They most certainly do. Many ministers don't retire, they go on sabbatical. For them they view themselves on a life mission for god. so instead, they go on a sabbatical where they preach at various churches around the world, but don't have the same workload they once did and no longer involve themselves in the day to day workings of the church.

There are more white people in general in this country. To say there are more poor whites is true, but to demonstrate some sort of systematic bias you have to look at what percentage of each race is poor.

White people are underrepresented in college, I'll tell you what. They also have such a hard time getting loans.

Not at all. But you can only tell other people to bootstrap but so much -- a lot of times behaviors are fully determined by environment. If you grew up in a hard ghetto, for instance, chances are you'd be in a gang (if only for the protection at first). Eventually you'll end up actually getting into the lifestyle, and shit repeats.

If you're in a community that socializes you to ignore the sorts of things that promote success, then what do you expect? Not to mention that when these people look for role models, they are few and far between. The policies of the past 30 years have been helping to equalize this, but that doesn't mean that the problems have all gone away. You can't just point at them and say "clean your act up" after the same exact actions that have allowed you to be privileged have disadvantaged their communities.

There's more to it than the fact that somebody can make it in this country with the right drive and smarts. The point is that drive and smarts (the smarts required to make it economically, at least), are determined by environment, culture, and the resources and opportunities afforded by one's community. There are always outliers that do it on their own -- that naturally have the stuff required to dig themselves out -- but even those people come at the right place at the right time.
