and that final play by George Mason was some Herb Sendek shit. how do you not get off a shot in 13 seconds? especially after you fouled out Villanova's entire team?

besides Randle, what does Cal have to make them the best team in the Pac-10? Is the Pac-10 just that bad this year?

in other news, i cannot state enough how much i LOVE listening to Bob Knight call a game. he provides great insight, good commentary, and adds some humor as well.

^^i hope that is the case because that will kill them come March

you cannot win in college basketball without at least one great guard

Ohio St. needs to start hitting open shots; UNC is giving them some open looks but Ohio St. can't hit anything

^unfortunately, no one can

this is UNC's worst guard line-up in a decade and it is not even close

they are going to lose to any team that can pressure them on the perimeter

If Clemson's press is working against them on that night UNC will turn it over 50 times

I know their guards will improve SOME but they just are not talented at all...I think Ole Roy has made some recruiting mistakes

they dont have talent but so what. they didn't have overwhelming talent last year but were BY FAR the best team in the country last year. Why? because of coaching. The way they are coached gets them layups and easy shots while their defense collapses and shuts down everything inside. the only way to effectively score against roy's help d is by draining 3s all night. Thats the only way you can beat them is if you have good ball handling guards that can also shoot 3s like crazy.

They will roll a lot of good teams.

Ellington was the #1 SG, Lawson was like the #1 or 2 PG, Handsbarabragh was a top 15 player, and he somehow got them all to stay until their junior year.

I say that counts as overwhelming talent.

yes. unc had overwhelming talent last year. i would think that would have been undisputable.

the team this year just doesn't seem like unc. they aren't fast, and seem really young and timid. i'm thinking unc is going to get their clock cleaned this year. i'm guessing walmart is going to have to change their entire sports attire now.

^^they will win some games but they have NO guard play....i mean it is atrocious

i wouldn't want to bet on them winning more than 23 to 25 games (which is a good year). they play a tough non conference schedule and I would say Duke, Maryland, and Clemson are probably all better, at least right now.

you can't win in college bball without guards and right now they have ZERO.

i am beating this into the ground but I have never seen a UNC team, at least not in 10 years, with this bad of guard play. UNC fans have been spoiled with Felton and Lawson back to back for eight or so years and are about to be in for a rude awakening

^that is the one thing that UNC can force teams to do this year

They have so much size that it is going to be really hard to get a lot of points around the basket (unless you have a dominant big man that can score one on one in the post)

UNC will force teams to be jump shooting teams at times b/c it will look like that is all you can get

and BTW Matta is an idiot; anyone who zones UNC is STUPID, at least right now. They have no guard play. Pressure the piss out of them and force turnovers. Don't allow their guards to be able to throw uncontested passes into the post

Roy was thinking,

"SHOOT. My shotgun philosophy of recruiting a ton of kids and whichever ones say yes first has backfired. I'm stuck with two kids who have less talent and athleticism than Hansbrough."

I know these guys will improve but I truly believe that Roy has made some recruiting mistakes in this freshmen class. They don't look as naturally talented or athletic as their previous few classes.

their guards aren't BAD. they aren't like ncstates were a few years ago they just aren't good. They are average. every team should zone unc because they don't have much outside shooting. ^roy doesn't really recruit anymore. he just offers all the top players and takes the ones that commit first.

I don't see how anyone could say unc had an overwhelming talent advantage over teams like louisville, pitt or uconn last season. Thats just silly. You have to distinguish the difference between having overwhelming talent (memphis a few years ago) and being an overwhelmingly good team (unc last year)

every guard on their roster is terrible so far with the exception of Drew and he has been mediocre at best

They definitely do not have the guard or wing play of the past few years and it is showing and will show throughout the year. Name one team in the ACC that any of their guards would start for...like someone said earlier, Javi would play a lot for this UNC team and that is saying something

And of course UNC didn't have overwhelming talent when comparing them to the other two or three best teams in the country but they did when compared to 98% of the country. Put that with their experience and they were an overwhelmingly talented team last year

Looks like Roscoe Smith, one of the best SF left, is going to commit to Duke. I just don't get it. He was the CLEAR backup option to the point where K didn't even bother to be on campus for his visit at a school that doesn't have a great history of developing great wings. Meanwhile, he was the #1 option for UConn, who was in on him from the beginning and has the best track record in the last 15 years of producing excellent wings (and is about to put another first round SF in the Association next year)...

Oh well... congrats to the Duke fans I guess. He might actually turn out to be more important to your program over the next 3-4 years than Harrison Barnes would have for only next year. Nice consolation prize and I guess it's interesting that UNC jumped in on Barnes long after K did and K jumped back in on Roscoe so long after JTIII and Calhoun did.

*** And seriously, how on earth could ANYONE question Roy's recruiting. Jeez... They are STILL a Top 10 team this year after losing nearly 80% of their offense from last year... If anyone is going to beat them in the ACC the next five years this is the year. After this year it's pretty much over...

i dont know about that. harrison barnes is going to be sick, but he's going to be out of there after 1 year and unc's success with one and dones is usually using them as a strong accessory player, not putting them into the focus. as for the rest of their class, i dunno

kendall marshall will be a good player, but he doesnt fit roy's system. the wears suck, dont even try to give me any shit about that. i've heard from (unbiased) people who think bullock is overrated, but i think worst case scenario he's ellington level. then you add in drew, zeller, etc, theyve surely made some mistakes. shit, their best guard this year is justin watts

you can talk about benefit of the doubt all you want, but really, you could of said the same thing about duke 5 years ago. "What do you mean David McClure, Paulus, Boateng and McRoberts were mistakes? K knows what he's doing." The difference, of course, is that once Roy realizes he fucked up he can just say "oh shit, time to pay attention to this" and UNC will be back to 30 wins instead of 24 in one year

Hell, Duke even kind of did that when they recruited over Tyler Thornton with Irving

I completely agree that UCONN does a great job of developing and producing wing guys.

I would disagree that Duke doesn't though. Grant Hill, Mike Dunleavy, Corey Maggette, Dahntay Jones come to mind immediately. I know Maggette only stayed one year i believe but still. Duke has produced some very good wings over Coach K's tenure.

I'm sure the list for UCONN is longer. But it is not like Duke has not produced good wings. Hill, Dunleavy, and Maggette have all played at all-star level at some point in their careers.

I would classify Deng as more of a wing than a true inside guy, too for what it's worth.

I'd put up Rip Hamilton, Caron Butler, Charlie Villanueva, Rudy Gay et al up against any other school in terms of NBA success as a wing though.

I was just being bitter as usual though

^^ there is a lot of what-ifs. They are so long inside this year that the lack of guard experience will only hurt them against teams that can match up inside, which is a short list. I don't think they will be a Final Four team but I think a lot of people are selling them short. With the talent they have already committed in 2010 and 2011 classes, I think it's a stretch to think they will not remain at the top of the ACC. And frankly, I never thought Boateng an McClure should have ever been rated as high as they were... and from the first day I saw Lance Thomas play in college I never got the idea he would've been an impact player. From day one I thought Ed Davis and think John Henson will be impact players.

But like you said, time will tell. As a State fan I certainly HOPE they aren't as good as I feel they will be in the next five seasons.

V UConn people seem to think he is a Duke lock... but I also though Barnes was solid Duke as well.

i don't think Roscoe Smith to Duke is a done deal, not sure where that info came from. (and you can add Luol Deng to Duke's list of successful wings, even though he was one and done).

tower's post above about Roy's recruiting classes for this year and the next few years is spot on imo. i think Ed Davis will struggle for the first part of this season, as he benefited last year from all the attention given to Hansbrough. he needs to learn how to become the man in the post, something he hasn't shown yet. and I am still wondering if Roy will keep trying to use Henson at the 3. dude has no offensive game right now, other than being tall. he only played for 8 minutes last night. i think Syracuse's zone will cause UNC a lot of problems tonight

Not to mention Danny Green who was probably the best all around player on that team. Lawson will make the best pro no doubt, but Green is the guy that always seemed to make the big play for UNC.

Why wouldn't you play zone against UNC?? All they have is an inside game. I think Syracuse will give them fits. I love watching Boeheim's zone. UNC isn't a great shooting team, but they have decent shooter. But Syracuse will be able to extend out on them. I've only sporadically watched UNC play this year, but it seems like Ginyard has been lights out from three....at least he doesn't miss much when I'm watching.
