what's wrong with liberal amounts of self-awareness?

as long as it's still funny, you can do whatever you want.

Show should be pretty safe. Did a good job going up against BBT on CBS. Didn't lose any viewers from the finale last year.

Actually all of NBC's shows did as well as could be reasonably expected... including, unfortunately, Outsourced (bye bye P&R?).

^^^Agreed.

I'd say self-awareness is hands-down the most important thing for any piece of entertainment media to have. They just have to make sure it doesn't turn into self-obsession and circle-jerking (because if it does, they've lost the self-awareness to see how stupid it looks...). I haven't seen Community approach that point yet though, thankfully.

Ratings were solid - I thought Big Bang would have taken away more - with the geek element.

i have no idea why anyone thinks the big bang theory is funny

Is Big Bang Theory a show for nerds? I always thought it was more for people who find nerds funny. I figured the real nerds (like me) would prefer the IT Crowd or Chuck.

I just hope Community doesn't suffer a ratings hit to a show with a laughtrack.

Wait, Big Bang Theory is meant for nerds? I always thought it was just a shitty sitcom about people having sex/relationship drama, with a bad pun (or innuendo, or double-entendre, or whatever it is) in the name.

Then again, I've never watched it, and the ads make it look like shit, which it probably is... so no real loss there, I suppose.

Chang was great, scenes with him in the classroom had me rolling.

Although the shit at the end with him was sorta weird, not sure about all that.

Please elaborate.

If you're saying that for a program to be entertaining then it needs to understand what is entertaining about itself, then I agree.

But if you're saying that it needs to let the audience know that it knows what its doing to be entertaining, then I don't get you. How is that essential?

Of course, you may not get me. The way I've worded this probably isn't very clear. (sleepy)

^great line

the rest is mediocre

^3 not even close for me. mostly because arrested development demonstrated they were addressing a full plot for three seasons out. its obvious once you watch it all, but this show lacks that sort of feel.

I like this show a lot, and I enjoy all of the characters, but to say it's getting close to Arrested Development quality is really pushing it.

There are some excellent self-contained episodes (chicken fingers, paintball), and the general story arcs are fine, but we'd be knee-deep in callbacks and in-jokes thought out a year in advance by now if they were on that level. Think of Sitwell/Lucille 2/Standpoor and the fact that they all existed in AD #101 as an example, and you'll see how Community falls short as of right now.

Also, this "Chang tries to get into the study group every week" bit is getting old, and it's only week #2. I hope they can it after three or four attempts.

You's on crack if you think this show is on the same level as Arrested.

Arrested was wrapped so tightly it's still somewhat mind boggling to me.

Still, Community is one of the best shows currently on television.

Arrested Development has significantly higher replay value, since you keep picking up on more and more jokes each time you watch an episode. That said Arrested Development was not a perfect show, and there were some elements of it that either didn't work or were obnoxious. Community isn't perfect either, but it's consistently hilarious and that's all you can really ask.

It does to a certain degree, but after one or two viewings most people would have picked up on all the jokes/references...that's not the case with AD where you can keep peeling back layers of jokes on the 4th or 5th viewing.

Arrested Development is an amazing show.
Community is is an amazing show.

I don't feel the need to rank them in order. I can enjoy them both.

But praising Community and recommending it to friends will help keep it on the air. Arrested Development is out of our hands now (even the movie, if it ever actually starts filming).

i feel like everyone i know must secretly be morons whenever I'm not around. Because whenever I discuss this show i get responses like "Community is alright, but it's not all that funny. but OMG did you see the Office after it? Jim put his desk on top of Dwights! rofl rofl"

i then sit there going

^^this reminds me of an argument I heard earlier that made me

someone was saying they liked modern family, and another couple of guys were like "ugh, why do they keep putting out this drivel?" When asked why, they said they are find with their arrested development on dvd- and upon further investigation, they hadn't even seen modern family, but rather assumed that nothing could be as good, and thus was bad. WHY CAN'T YOU LIKE MORE THAN ONE SHOW? ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVEN'T GIVEN IT A CHANCE??

On that note, I think Community if my favorite thursday night show on NBC now... the cast just has great chemistry (and yes i know it has its retarded moment, but that is part of the allure- being able to sit back, turn your brain off and laugh for 25 minutes is what I want when I watch most "comedys" on tv now)

This sounds awesome:

Quote :
"Scoop: 'Community' pulls a 'Rudolph'

When Community ingénue Alison Brie (Annie) says, “It’s going to be a very special Christmas episode,” she means it. The sophomore comedy is officially going through with plans to produce a holiday eppy in stop-motion animation like the old Rankin/Bass classics.

“When I found out,” Brie adds, “I fell in love with the show all over again!”

She wasn’t the only one.

“It is so hard for me not to tell everybody I know about it,” exclaims Danny Pudi (Aped). “The minute we read that script, I was over-the-moon excited. It’s like that Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer special that you see every Christmas. But in true Community fashion, it’s also a little subversive and a little dark.”

...."
