The one day of the year I actually have something planned and it affects my plans for the next week and this shit decides to happen. Looks like I will continue to pay for an empty new apartment as I highly doubt time warner or furniture delivery will take place on saturday as planned.

From our guy this morning. Looks like...we might actually...get some accumulation? /

That being said, I'm actually going to buy extra beer today! And, uh....milk and bread?

I'm still holding out hope it'll shift a bit North so we get more up in WV. It's looking like 4-8" up there total, but I'm sure that'll be locally higher on the mountain.

I'd say it's pretty certain Greensboro gets nailed and Raleigh gets at least ice covered by a fair amount of snow...

^ I think that is VERY overly optimistic, but we'll see.

Yeah, from what I have seen it looks like the northern part of Guilford County could see 8+ inches. I am down in the southeastern part of the county, and it looks like I could get 5-8". I can deal with the snow, I just hope the ice stays south. They are saying Asheboro could get an inch of ice, and that will no doubt kill the electricity down there for a couple days.

The issues here are that model trends are continuing to get colder and colder. The freezing and ice situation has shifted much further south, with mainly a significant threat of sleet and snow in the Triangle area. The thermal profile is ridiculously out of norm...you never see one this conducive to a large amount (1-2") of sleet. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. The 2000 event began as a sleet event as well...and you saw how that evolved. But then again, this is a little different from that setup.

I love weather prediction. Wral says 6-10", abc 13 says 1-3" with ice. G105 weather says light rain for tomorrow night. I need to go become a meteorologist. That has to be the only job where you can basically tell everyone "I don't know what the hell is going to happen" and not be looking for a new job the next day.

Ah, the glorious 2000 event. My senior year of HS, out of school for 2 weeks in January -- but didn't have to make up any days at the end of the year cuz Graduation was already booked.

I really don't see how WTVD and the local NBC-17 are both calling for wintry mix and maybe 1-3" based on ALL the models calling for roughly a foot.

If this is the big storm in Raleigh this year I'm going to be pissed I missed it!

The blizzard of 2000 was so great. No classes + drunk + shenanigans on Frat Court = ftw.

Way back in the day when I worked in the computer labs, a girl came in with a shirt that's awesome: snow is like sex: you never know how much you'll get, or how long it will last.

I'm going to stop with the updates for sake of not getting people overly excited (even though I'm just reading and re-posting)... but it appears to be shifting slightly northward, which would mean less cold air in the Triangle. Take that for it's worth.

The 9:00-10:00pm model updates should tell the whole story later today. I'll probably post again when those come out for the lazy who don't want to look at them.

i'm saying with temps this high, the ground will warm up. and the warmer the ground is, the less likely the snow will be to stick.

oh, you wait. you get this much snow in this time period, it's going to "stick."

actually, would make it more difficult to travel with the refreezing of melting initial snow. going to be good times.

Also, your soil temperatures are in the mid 30s. Not quite as warm as some would think.

ground temps are still only 36-39. six hours of air temps in the 60s arent going to change it that dramatically. still going to be plenty of chilling time before this gets here.

Quote :
"Much of North Carolina is now under a Winter Storm Watch from Friday night until Saturday night. After a nice, sunny day of 60 degrees today a cold front will move through central NC early tomorrow morning. This will bring in much colder air tomorrow, just in time for a low pressure system to bring the chance for precipitation to the area Friday night. Precipitation is expected to move over the Triangle around 7 or 8pm tomorrow, so the commute home tomorrow afternoon should be okay. The main forecasting issues with this system will be the type of precipitation that will fall, whether it will be all snow, an ice/snow mix, or mainly all ice. Our area looks to be right on the border between all snow and a mix of ice and snow. A lot of the models have trended towards some ice, but mostly snow for Raleigh, mainly all snow west and north of the area, and the best chance for freezing rain or sleet should be south and east of Raleigh. As of now, it looks possible for us to see a quarter of an inch of ice before changing over to all snow for Saturday. With plenty of moisture expected to fall, snowfall totals could be high and right now it looks reasonable for us to see 10-14’’. Any deviations in the track of the low could greatly factor into that snow total. If the ice line were to shift northward we would see more ice and less snow. WRAL was showing around 10’’ of snow on their forecast earlier today and the National Weather Service is showing around 7’’ of snow. Keep posted on future updates to this forecast.
