The only chance the chargers have is to wait until time is expiring to score.

Don't be silly. If the Chargers score a TD they can always just try an onside kick.

I'm a pretty big Rivers fanboy...but he has to start winning most of the games. Every now and then he does win them (Giants game last year), but I'm starting to feel like a majority of the time he doesn't (like today).

Over their careers, Manning and Brady win these games. So far, Rivers doesn't. He had two chances to tie this game (inside 20, 3+ downs), and he came up empty. That's the bottom line. He could have thrown for 600 yards, but he still lost to the fucking Seahawks.

And glorified hail-mary my ass. He was at the 20 yard line. And he panicked on 4th down at the first attempt to tie it. He had PLENTY of time to pass it and rushed the throw to Crayton and tried to get a PI call. I will say that one of his biggest negatives is that he definitely gets happy feet in the pocket (oh...and he should have thrown it away when he got tackled for that 2-yard gain..that was a rookie mistake).

When Manning was Rivers' age no one thought him all that clutch when it came to winning the biggest games.

And frankly, if you're talking about Rivers in the same breath as two of the top five QBs in history (I know this is arguable but IMO they both are) he's doing alright...

I'll put Manning on there...but fuck Brady being in the top-5...bias aside.

And yeah, I put those two names in there because I'm arguing against State fans who all put him in their category...when he's not there yet and might never get there.

He had a rush coming right up the middle on that last throw...his o-line sucks anus.

And Rivers didn't give up 2 fucking kickoff returns for touchdowns. As a matter of fact, haven't they given up 2 special teams TD's in both of their losses this year?

^^ I, too, am a Rivers fan boy. But I agree. I think the final piece to the Rivers epic awesomeness puzzle is a good O-Line, his pocket was crashing fast as hell tonight leaving him with a small narrow lane to work in. He isn't incredible mobile, but he is very patient and makes smart plays. Give the dude a first class O-Line and he will be infinitely better than he is right now.

went to the game. awesome home atmosphere for the seahawks. loudest NFL stadium i've been to.

and no, when your QB throws for 455 yards and your offense outgains your opponent 518-271 but you still take the L, not a whole lot of blame should go to your QB. especially when he follows up a called-back TD with another TD pass that stood. especially when he follows up a called-back 2 pt conversion with another successful conversion pass that stood. all this while the pressure is on and the crowd noise is nothing short of deafening.

this team relies on him---i think that's pretty clear.

shore up the kickoff and punt coverage units, and this team will roll.

Are you a fucking joke. When your QB is throwing for 455 passing yards and your fucking FULLBACK gets 181 yards subbing in as the RB; there is not much else you can ask for at least on offense....

Currently with a record of 1-2 we are 2nd in the league for passing and 12th in the league for rushing (remember last year we were 31st in rushing) yards.

I have lost count of the games were philip (with the help of his WR corp) brought the chargers back in the 4th to win. Sure sometimes they also fall short.

What the hell else can Rivers do to be more a winner to win the games that you claim your butt buddies Manning and Brady win?? Punch the special teams guys in the face for giving up 2 touchdowns during the kickoff? By the way the Chargers are the only team at the professional level I have seen to give up 2 kickoff touchdowns in one game (last year versus the Broncos on MNF). Also, it must be Philip's fault that the kicker during the divisionals last year got a cold foot and missed 3 FG attempts that you expect a professional kicker to at least make 66.6% of the time (would have given us the win).

The only thing I blame Philip for is perhaps not controlling the line better pre-snap. This cost them several false starts and delay of game penalties. Even after the penalty he was still able to throw a consecutive TD pass to tie the game 20-20. I am still trying to decide of Norv made the right call going for it even after the delay of game penalty at 4th and 15.

What I think makes the Chargers a "loser team" (in the playoffs) versus the Pats and Colts (super bowl champs under Brady and Manning) is coaching. Norv in my opinion is the shortfall of SD.

Found this on the internet because I was curious:

Quote :
"His definition of a comeback opportunity: any time a quarterback takes the field in the fourth quarter facing a deficit of between 1 and 8 points. We asked Kacsmar to come up with a list of the top 10 active quarterbacks with the best comeback percentage. We narrowed the list to veteran QBs, that is, ones with at least five seasons under their belts.

1. Tom Brady (64%) 21 of 33
2. Ben Roethlisberger (52%) 16 of 31
3. Eli Manning (48%) 13 of 27
4. Peyton Manning (45%) 29 of 65
5. Philip Rivers (37%) 10 of 27
6. Donovan McNabb (32%) 13 of 41
7. Brett Favre (31%) 29 of 93
8. Carson Palmer (30%) 10 of 33
9. Drew Brees (29%) 10 of 35
10. Kurt Warner (22%) 8 of 37"

Looks like Philip is about where I said he is. He's not in Brady or Peyton's class. Before this season (and the losses at KC and Seattle) I would have put him right behind Brady, Peyton, and Brees...but extremely close. But I feel like the KC and Seattle games further prove that he is distinctly behind those guys...and until he starts winning those games, he will stay behind them. And I don't think Big Ben is that great of a QB...but he somehow finds a way to win those games. And shit...even Eli wins them at a higher percentage than Philip.

Quote :

From the stats above, it seems he falls short more often than comes back.

Quote :

Out of all the QBs I mentioned, Peyton is the only one I generally like. I loathe Brady and the "other" Manning...I also don't like Big Ben. I'm indifferent against Brees, but cheer against him because I think people compare him and Philip because San Diego got rid of Brees because of Rivers. So basically I'm a huge Rivers fanboy...I'm just not a biased one like most NC State fans.

Quote :

Rivers kinda sucked in that game as well. So it's not just the kicker's fault. Rivers puts forth just an average regular season type performance and the Chargers beat the Jets.

Quote :

This shows your lack of knowledge about the game.

There is 2:30 left in the game at that point.

If they kick a field goal:

- They are still down 4 points, so they still have to score a touchdown.
- They have to kickoff to a guy who has already ran back 2 touchdowns on them...also more time runs off the clock during the kickoff.
- If they do a squib kick, then Seattle gets decent field position instead of the 17/18 yard line they would get it if San Diego misses the 4th down attempt. So they have further to go to score a touchdown in less time.
- I guess they could kick a field goal then do an onside kick and play to win the game. But onside kicks are uncovered about 10/15% of the time...so not a good gamble there.

If they go for it and don't make it:

- Seattle gets bad field position.
- No time runs off the clock from a kick-off.
- Seattle still has to run the ball, so if San Diego stops them short of the first down, they have to punt from anywhere between the 15-25 yard line...instead of the 35+ yard line that would have happened if they squib kicked to avoid Washington.
- And they probably get the ball back with about 1:40 left (which they did).

Anybody with an average amount of football intelligence would have gone for it on 4th down. No debate.

Quote :
"By the way the Chargers are the only team at the professional level I have seen to give up 2 kickoff touchdowns in one game (last year versus the Broncos on MNF)."

Do you only watch Chargers games??? Ted Ginn and Josh Cribbs both did it LAST YEAR. Devin Hester did it a couple years before that. Not to mention Eddie Royal for Denver returned a kickoff and a punt return for a TD last year...not two kickoffs.

Just so every poster on this board doesn't get all riled up...

Bottom line: I think Rivers is a great QB. He's my favorite player in the NFL and one of my favorite NC State players ever (I still have soft spots for a lot of State players...Jamie Barnette, Torry Holt, Erik Kramer, etc.) I've watched almost every Charger's game he's ever played in and I think he's done a really good job.

However...I've seen him with a lot of opportunities to win games like these...and although I know he's won a couple, the only one that really sticks out in my mind is the Giants game last year. I feel like I've watched a ton of games that end like the recent Seattle and KC games. I don't care if his defense sucks, his running game sucks, or the Special Teams sucks...he is in a position to win a lot of games like these and doesn't come through a lot. It seems to me that Peyton almost always wins these game...Brady use to, although he struggled a little last year, it seems like he's coming back...and although I don't think Big Ben is that great, he also seems to win these games...Rivers doesn't seem to have it at the end of the game like they do. What's funny is that he seems to be great at getting them back IN the game...but when it finally comes down to winning it, that's when he falls short. That's all I'm saying. And I think that is what separates him from the best.

That's a ton of words for being wrong. You bring up the endings of the KC and Seattle games as if its the norm for Rivers, which it is not. Call it being a fanboy or whatever, but at the end of the KC he had a sure fire touchdown pass to Davis and Floyd had they not busted there ass. f

(And fwiw I don't know any State fan that thinks Rivers is better than Peyton Manning.)

You fuckers can't read for shit. State fans just want to put him in the same class as Manning/Brady/Brees...when he isn't.

I hope he can get there...but he's not there yet and I'm starting to doubt if he will get there.

Not being in the same class (yet, I agree with you)as 3 first ballot HOF'rs doesn't mean you come up short in crucial situations. More times than not, Rivers comes through clutch.

while I agree regarding Manning and Brady, how are you including Brees in the discussion regarding comeback ability when Brees has done it less frequently than Rivers? The same number of comebacks in 8 more attempts?

Brees' play the past couple of years has been absolutely ridiculous. It's been a level above everyone except for Manning...and equal to his. The only thing that has held him back from top tier has been his ability to win a championship...now that he has done that, he's up there with them.

So Brees might not be the best comeback guy, but his QB play is head and shoulders above everyone except for Peyton.

I wouldn't argue too hard against that...although Brady is looking better this year than last. So last year could have definitely an aberration, especially coming off major knee surgery. I also hate Brady.

^^

No, you're just dumb.

I didn't say Rivers isn't clutch. I mean...he's a little clutch. But YOU said that "more often than not..."

More often than not = greater than 50%. So you're wrong.

Peyton, by those stats, is at least more clutch than Rivers. I never said that either of those QB's isn't clutch...that's just something that you made up.
