it's not like we have an HR dept that is solely responsibly for hiring ADs....doesn't hurt to outsource plus participate

I am gonna ride the Woodson bandwagon. He is not scared to take decisions which may not be too popular in the short run.

Gotta admit, I was kind of pissed last night, but the more I hear about her, the more comfortable I get. Also I like the fact that she was on the search team's list, all that stuff from last night sounds more like Purcell's buddies were looking for some controversy. Hopefully Purcell will get a raise and opt to stay.

^^Purcell is one of the highest paid, if not the highest paid at his position.

If he takes an AD job he will take a significant paycut. Whether or not he cares about that I have no idea.

He's at least the highest paid in the ACC, but I figure since he didn't get the job we may have to do something to try and keep him.

^^^ It concerned me a bit as well, but I look at it as 2 completely different situations. In MD, the Fridge had 3 really, really good years and they gave him a big extension, then his program fell apart and they didn't have the money to buy him out. Now they're grasping at straws to try and rectify the situation. Here I think it is much more simple, if TOB doesn't have a winning season (at least 7-5 with a bowl) - then he's gone. Hearing how she said we need to strive to begin to complete for Top 25 and then build on that move into Top 10 category made me feel a lot better. She sounds like her employees keep their jobs based on performance, something Fowler never seemed to care about. I would like to see her examine the coaching situation with baseball and soccer pretty soon though.

i, for one, have never been a big fan of long term contracts...IMO coaches/players can get complacent knowing they are making $Texas and have 6 to 10 years left on their contracts...but at the same time you can end up paying way too much that way...double edged sword

i wonder what the % rate of people that get extensions actually realize the end of their contracts

LUCKILY for us...she has had these debacles already and they are out of the way...maybe she learned a lot from them and can move on from there. Seems to have happened, especially in basketball at UMD.

I sure hope so...I think the future is bright...I hope she really does a FANTASTIC job. Im pulling for her now...hell, shes gotta be better than Lee.

i think she has a pretty good record with non revenue sports. this is not what puts a program on the map, but most of ours are pretty terrible.

I think we could have done a lot worse than Debbie Yow, and I'm not too terribly upset by this hire, but everyone wants to mention her record of academic success. Now I don't care about the non-revenue sports programs' APR, b/c for the most part those kids have no chance at making money playing professionally, but how in the world did she not get Gary Williams to improve his program's terrible APR? Whether it's right or wrong, a college's men's basketball and football programs are the face of its athletic department. When those kids aren't doing well it looks bad on the university. Hopefully she can improve the football program's APR, and have Sidney continue keeping us at #1 in the ACC in APR.

too early for Post of the Year?

Quote :
"So if I'm understanding everything on PackPride correctly, this is a bad hire because:

1. She's not Bobby Purcell.

2. Maryland fans on the internet don't like her, and we suddenly think Maryland fans are smart and have valid opinions.

3. She's not Bobby Purcell.

4. She, along with her late sister and Janet Reno, is a key figure in a bull dyke conspiracy to take all of the funding away from our men's sports and give it to the women's teams.

5. She's not Bobby Purcell.

6. Despite our earlier fury at the search committee for giving Dr. Woodson 6 names instead of 3, and our subsequent declarations that the committee wasn't doing its job right, we now think that if, by some chance, Woodson may or may not have ignored the committee's recommendations, he should be fired for this.

7. Spending $75,000 on a search firm and then hiring Kay Yow's sister is unacceptable, while spending $75,000 on a search firm and then hiring the head of the booster club would have been the ideal outcome.

8. She doesn't get along with noted megadouche Gary Williams.

9. Something something something Herb.

10. Blah blah blah TOB blah."

I know everyone is waiting for my view on this hire.

Was initially concerned based on the immediate fan reaction while I had know knowledge of her. After hearing the radio discussion interviews and press conference I am super pumped.

This will put us on track for long te success!

found this on a maryland blog
Quote :
"Wow, it sounds like some of these posters should actually read up on everything she accomplished for Maryland. Here's just a few items below; of course these awards and accolades are given by people who actually know something rather than blog blowhards, and are based on fact rather than unfounded opinion so they may seem out of place here.

1) Last year the NCAA News named Maryland as a top ten athletic program in the nation.
2) Both Sports Illustrated and US News and World Report named Maryland one of the top 20 athletic programs in the nation (for quality and competitive excellence).
3) The Center for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics, based on a comprehensive set of criteria including competitive excellence, financial performance, and graduation rates.
4) Last year the Princeton Review named Maryland's athletic facilities (which have been completely revitalized under Yow's leadership) as #1 in the nation.
5) The school has won 11 national championships in the past 5 years, and has a national all-sports ranking in the top 7% of Division I institutions.

Under Yow's leadership:
-Private gifts to athletics have increased 350% and corporate sponsorship revenue has increased 300%
-The school successfully completed a $250 million facilities upgrade plan
-Maryland has had a balanced athletic budget (which it didn't have for 10 years prior to her arrival)

If you have a problem with a specific sport blame the coach. What Yow has done at Maryland transcends basketball or football or any one sport- she has taken a program that was in shambles prior to her arrival (do you remember the state of Maryland athletics in 1993) and turned it into a winner- across 27 sports and 700+ athletes a year.

i feel that this is a good hire for overall athletics. which is i guess what most people want in an AD. but it may not be the best hire in terms of mens basketball, and football. which are the only two things that matter

I don't think we can look at MD's lack of success in FB and decline in MBB since the '02 championship as any correlation to how Yow will handle those sports at NCSU. In FB she had a coach at MD that was a new head coach, had great early success, and then got hamstrung with a huge contract and no ability to buy him out. With TOB, even if he wins he won't be here for the long term and also if she's here when we hire our next FB coach, I HIGHLY doubt she ever goes the route of doing that coach in waiting stuff again.

With Gary Williams she probably should've worked harder to maintain a relationship because he was MD's best coach ever, but at the same time the guy is a complete asshole. She shouldn't have major personality clashes with Sidney Lowe.

i dont really care that she messed up with the fridge extension. if we have a guy come in and win like he did early i'd hope we strike quick with the cash before someone else takes him, and not being able to buy him out doesnt sound like its her fault all that much - though it does worry me since our athletics are run on the cheap and may have a similar problem. the MAIN problem I have w/ her football decisions is that idiotic franklin contract. luckily the NCAA is getting rid of that shit so we dont have to worry about it

This is something I've been meaning to post for a few days now and just kept forgetting about whenever I was near a computer, from two article in the Saturday paper:

She would have had NO problem getting the Fridge buyout money at NCSU. Like was said by others, the coach in waiting situation was the real issue (along with Maryland's weaker booster base).

Also, I don't think Gary Williams gets along with anyone.
