Quote :
"ACC GAME OF THE WEEK

NC State (3-0) at Georgia Tech (2-1) Sept. 25, 12:00 ET, ESPN

Here’s The Deal … NC State and Georgia Tech are both coming off pivotal wins, with a chance to double down in Atlanta this Saturday. The Wolfpack has been the early surprise of the ACC, sweeping the first three games, including a nationally televised rout of Cincinnati last Thursday night. The cautious optimism currently surrounding the start of the season will shift to unbridled enthusiasm with a road win at the defending the champs this weekend. The Yellow Jackets rebounded swiftly from their awful loss to Kansas a week earlier to hold off Coastal Division rival North Carolina, 30-24. The win sent a poignant message that, while Tech may not be as consistent as a year ago, it’ll still have to be dealt with in the conference race.

Why NC State Might Win: In one of the best quarterback battles of Week 4, the Pack might have an edge with Russell Wilson, who’s coming off a 333-yard, three-touchdown effort. He does so many things well, including spreading the ball around to Jarvis Williams, Owen Spencer, and TE George Bryan. He’ll be facing a Georgia Tech defense that’s been very soft the last two weeks and particularly beatable through the air. The NC State defense, on the other hand, is exceeding expectations, stuffing the run and getting backfield pressure from linebackers Audie Cole and Terrell Manning.

Why Georgia Tech Might Win: As stingy as NC State has been, the Yellow Jackets’ triple-option always presents unique challenges for a defense. QB Joshua Nesbitt and his backfield partners have begun to click, hammering the Carolina D for 372 yards and six yards a pop in Chapel Hill. Tech has begun to unleash B-back Anthony Allen, who’s coming off his first 100-yard game of the month, and shifty A-back Roddy Jones. When this attack starts playing downhill, especially at Bobby Dodd Stadium, it’s like trying to slow down a locomotive.

What To Watch Out For: While Tech will be content to run the ball 60 times, it’s always plotting when it can catch a defense off guard with a play-action pass. It’s one of the little-used, yet lethal, weapons in head coach Paul Johnson’s arsenal. Nesbitt is coming off his most consistent game of September as a passer, and will be looking for the right time to get the ball in the hands of Jones and WR Stephen Hill.

What Will Happen: While NC State is capable of hanging with Georgia Tech from wire-to-wire, actually beating the Yellow Jackets on the Flats is an entirely different situation. Tech will buckle on defense, but consistently get bailed out by Nesbitt and the relentless running game. The Wolfpack defense has clearly made strides in the right direction, but it still lacks the depth and girth on the inside to withstand the 60 minutes of pounding it’s going to endure.

CFN Prediction: Georgia Tech 31 … NC State 27 … 5Dimes.com Line: Georgia Tech -8.5

Must See Rating: The Social Network – 5 … $#*! My Dad Says - 1 … 4 "

Is that a minus, or a dash? Does that article say that GT is an expected 8.5 point loser?

have you never seen a line before?

generally
Georgia Tech - 8.5 points = NC State's points

but it just means that half the people are betting both ways

From Mark Schlabach:
Quote :
"Boston College, Clemson and Florida State were expected to battle for the ACC's Atlantic Division title, but NC State has looked like the division's best team so far. After limping through the 2009 season -- which was derailed by injuries, penalties and turnovers -- the Wolfpack are 3-0 heading into Saturday's ACC showdown at Georgia Tech.

Quarterback Russell Wilson, who threw 11 interceptions and was sacked 30 times last season, hasn't thrown a pick in his first 101 pass attempts this season. Wilson is completing 56.4 percent of his passes for 744 yards with eight touchdowns.

Last season, the Wolfpack ranked 114th nationally in turnover margin, losing 12 fumbles and throwing 13 picks. This season, NC State has lost only two fumbles in three games. That's the recipe Georgia Tech used to win the ACC championship in 2009."

I don't know how much stock to take in this, but I was curious to see how Tenuta's defense at Notre Dame performed against Navy the last two years. I know Paul Johnson wasn't at Navy, but they still run the option. So I figured that it would be a decent way to compare a Tenuta defense versus a spread option offense. Keep in mind that Tenuta just arrived at ND in 2008, so he wasn't really able to recruit any of "his" kind of players.

Last year, Notre Dame lost 23-21 at HOME. Navy ran for nearly 350 yards and won the TOP battle 32:30 to 27:30. Navy committed 0 turnovers and forced 3 Irish turnovers.

I'd like to think that we have a better defense than Notre Dame. But I still worry that our aggressive blitzing schemes get us burned too many times. Hopefully we're smart enough to make halftime adjustments.

^they went toe to toe with an SEC contender. Did you see how their defense was hitting? holy crap they are super athletic and all over the place. Kyle Parker is similar to RW and they have a pretty good big play potential on the ground with ellington. They look like far and beyond the best team in the ACC.

Then the fact that they run a screen offense leaves me believing we have absolutely no chance in beating them as it will require great tackling out of the secondary just to keep up with them. Blitzing won't be able to bail us out of that.

i really dont know where people get this "nc states schedule is terrible" stuff from

seriously, we havent had to play ohio state or LSU but the games we've played, 1AA team aside, were not easy. Both Cincy and UCF were games that could be easily lost, but if we lost them, it would look bad. Similar to GT vs Kansas actually. Nobody gives a fuck if UNC loses to LSU. Granted, UCF is UCF and Cincy looks like they're worse than expected this year, so predicting us to win the ACC right now is premature. But acting like this is the 11-3 Amato year where we started out the year beating New Mexico, Eastern Tennessee State, Navy and Wake...come on

clemson O Line > nc state O line
clemson QB < nc state QB, but VERY slightly
clemson RBs >> nc state RBs
clemson WRs << nc state WRs
clemson TE < nc state TE
clemson d line > nc state d line
clemson linebackers < nc state linebackers
clemson secondary >> nc state secondary
clemson K < nc state K
clemson punter >>>> nc state punter

if i assign 1pt per category that one team is better in, it totals 5-5.

its a tossup at this point in my opinion. i think both teams are evenly matched.

"NC State 31, Georgia Tech 28: This was the toughest pick of the week, and usually, when I’m in doubt, I go with the home team, but this week I’ll go with the hot team. NC State’s defense has been solid on third downs, and Georgia Tech’s defense hasn’t done anything to lead me to believe it can slow down Russell Wilson. "

I think the most impressive thing about this team is that we haven't played close to a perfect game, but we've won the games soundly. RW is way off one week, we have some crazy turnovers/penalties the next, but we overcome the bad play because we've been the better team. We kill Cincy, and we would've killed UCF if they didn't bring Woody Dantzler Jr into the game.

That said, GT will show us a lot about how much we've really improved.

still kind of in awe that GT fans are talking about our defense...saying we're just a blizting team which wont have success against the option. until about 4 weeks ago we hadnt seen a blitz in 3 years.

^ i think what's silly about some of these comments are that its like our coaches are NOT going to make adjustments. I guess they think this is like playing Madden or something. Tenuta's dreaming about blitzing, nothing can change him.

player interviews this week have made me feel a lot better about our chances of containing their run. our guys are talking like the KNOW they must be disciplined, stay in their gaps, and are aware that GT likes to suck you in for 12 straight running plays then try one over the top.

gopack.com has some interview videos

I'll feel good about our defense vs the triple option when I see it. The triple option is so unique that it's pretty impossible to predict how our defense will do against it.

I'm going to hop on the "expectations + optimism = loss" bandwagon.

I've been through too much NC State shit to expect anymore than a loss.

Of course, with that said, I will not be surprised if we win.
