^interesting...never knew his seat was toasty and who cares about recruiting class rankings? on field performance is all that matters and after his rebuilding years he's doing alright.

i think he needs to validate last year w/ at least 8 to 10 wins (given our schedule) this year for sure but i don't think he's on a toasty seat

Wow... dead last!?! Reading that "article" frustrated me. I'm pretty shocked they ranked Spaziani, London and Golden ahead of him. I want my five minutes back.

My favorite part is that it was written by "Staff." lol... that was a collaborative effort?

poorly written article. My favorites:

Quote :
"he coaches well-disciplined, tough teams, but the wins aren’t coming "

Quote :
"He needs to make the Pack a player in the ACC race in a hurry."

We were a "player" all season last year.

Wake Forest:
Quote :
"Hot Seat Status: Little. Even if the Demon Deacons keep losing, the school isn’t going to want to eat a contract signed through 2016.

The Coaching Change Will Come … In 2015. "

says we can't fall behind Carolina, but i don't really see that as an issue considering we whoop them every year

i think now is the time we begin to see real consistency from the program

To me, this is why Glennon is going to be different and only God knows for sure, but not only is he 7 inches taller than RW, but his release point is even higher. He can stand in the pocket and throw passes that RW simply couldn't.

Quote :
"Wolfpack OL taking shape

As a former Marine, Tom O'Brien clearly understands the importance of controlling the trenches. It has been the underpinning of his professional existence for more than three decades. It was even part of his DNA when playing football at the U.S. Naval Academy in the 1970s.

O'Brien was an offensive lineman with the Midshipmen, and he later coached the boys up front at Virginia under George Welsh. O'Brien taught some of the top blockers of the 1980s and early '90s, and following as the head coach at Boston College.

Laying the foundation for a strong, self-sustaining offensive line has been a tag O'Brien gladly embraces, because he knows it's true. There is arrogance about him when it comes to crafting an OL, and justifiably so.

"Everywhere I've been, we've had strong offensive lines," O'Brien said. "You have to be able to control the line of scrimmage."

That is why Wolfpack fans should be excited about the just-completed spring practice sessions. One of the best stories, although under-reported, is the development of this all-important unit. With new starters at quarterback and at wide receiver, and questions about health and experience in the backfield, this group must stabilize the entire unit.

Offensive line has been a work in progress since O'Brien arrived, and was an enormous concern heading into last season. But that group exceeded expectations, and the unit is now a strength for the Pack. This group could round out into one of the top corps in the ACC.

Senior R.J. Mattes, who is 6-foot-6 and weighs 303 pounds, moving to left tackle is an important development. He has NFL talent, and to become the anchor of the line was part of O'Brien's vision a couple of years ago. It signals the unit is on track with its growth.

And with 6-foot-7, 312-pound Robert Crisp at right tackle, State has two big-time prospects as the soul of the offensive line. Crisp, who was a basketball player in high school, is athletic for his position, and is adept at getting out and blocking for wide runs and all sorts of screens and short passes. He shades and releases exceptionally well.

Though Crisp played sparingly last year, the word in camp was that he's ready to explode. He made the most of his time observing, and he's ready to take over at right tackle, though there is no experience quite like game experience.

"Those young kids, Crisp played a little but not as much as, say, Tyson Chandler (6-6, 340, sophomore) and those other guys," O'Brien said. "They've got to get back out there. They've got to get their feet wet. They've got to get their nose bloodied and they've got to learn."

Mikel Overgaard is also on the right side and isn't going to hand Crisp the job.

Senior Zach Allen (6-3, 322) is the starter at right guard, but sophomore Tyson Chandler (6-6, 340) has more upside. State is strong at center with 6-3, 290-pound senior Cam Wentz, and at left guard, where senior Andrew Wallace (6-5, 304) is in charge.

This is a mostly veteran group though it has some holes in experience. Its talent, such as Crisp, could make for a short building period. And the others who are light on experience have gained confidence.

"Overgaard's playing, and he started a couple of games until he got hurt last year," O'Brien said. "He's got some experience because he's been around. (Sophomore Duran) Christophe played last year. He backed up and played the whole bowl game. So those two kids have been in games. Maybe not as the other three, but that's valuable coming back for the confidence and having been in games."

Add into the mix possible All-American tight end George Bryan, who is as adept at blocking as he is at catching passes and turning up field, and you have a terrific foundation for a fine offensive line. And the timing of the unit's development is pretty good.

It must anchor the Pack until Mike Glennon can get into a groove with a green bunch of pass-catchers and the tailbacks sort themselves out."

I have faith that Horton, Bridge and O'Brien will get it done with the OL.

However, there hasn't been much to show for their ability to craft a good OL so far.

I know this is kool-aid drinking material, and its got me wanting to tear up my house out of excitement and "hit something" but its a good read

From Mark Thomas, WRAL on his Spring Game observations
Quote :
"- The first thing that jumps out at me after the game is the impressive play of the defense. The front 4 of the Wolfpack outplayed the offensive line. The same offensive line that will be the most experienced and arguably the best line since the arrival of Tom O’Brien. D-lineman McKay Frandsden, J. R. Sweezy, Markus Kuhn, and Jeff Rieskamp won the battle in the trenches when the offensive and defensive starters were going against each other. Linebacker play improves when the defense gets a push from the front line.

- Linebacker DJ Green was impressive. His transition from safety to linebacker, is progressing quickly. At 6-4 214 pounds, he still needs to add some weight to be able to fill holes and take on offensive lineman in run support. That will come. But as far as speed and quickness, he is more than capable in those departments. His coverage ability allows DC Mike Archer to stay in base personnel when teams go with 3 wide receivers.

- QB Mike Glennon didn’t have one of his better days (21-40 182 yds. 2 int). I attribute most of his poor play to defensive pressure and receivers lack of play making ability. With RB Mustafa Green out with a foot injury, the linebackers weren’t respecting the run. Meaning, when Glennon dropped back there were more guys in coverage. The Wolpack is looking for play makers. Guys who can turn a simple 4 yard slant into a big play. Or someone who can convert on the deep ball. Getting open on go routes is speed and technique. Catching the deep ball is a skill that not all receivers possess. Over the last couple of years Owen Spencer was that guy. TJ Graham has the speed and skills to get open, but at times seems to lack finishing skills.

- Dealing with injuries is a part of football. When a guy comes back from season ending knee surgery, it seems they’re usually chomping it to bit to back on the field. For DB’s Jarvis Byrd and Rashard Smith it was evident the two were ready to perform from the jump. It seems as if the Byrd and Smith had never missed a snap in college. Better coverage gives Mike Archer the ability to be more aggressive when dialing up the blitz.

- Linebacker Audi Cole seems to be the leader of the team. The former high school quarterback seems at ease at middle linebacker, quarterbacking the defense. It allows Terrell Manning and DJ Green to pin their ears back and make plays."

It would be awesome if we won a national championship this year.

1. Because it's a National Championship, duh.
2. We could use Zach Galifianakis to say "The Wolfpack is Back" in every type of media possible.

"Oakland A's strength coach leaves for job at N.C. State
OAKLAND -- The A's on Tuesday learned of the departure of strength and conditioning coach Bob Alejo, who has accepted a position at North Carolina State University.

Alejo, who will serve as the assistant athletic director for strength and conditioning for all 23 Wolfpack varsity teams, will temporarily be replaced by Mike Henriques, Oakland's Minor League strength and conditioning coordinator.

Henriques has held that position since November and previously spent five seasons in the Padres' Minor League system, including two as their assistant coordinator. He has also worked in the NBA, playing the role of assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Portland Trail Blazers for four years.

It marks the second departure from Oakland for Alejo, a player favorite who assumed his role as director of strength and conditioning from 1993 to 2001 before returning in '09."

"From 1984-93, Alejo served as strength and conditioning coach at UCLA, where he worked with 23 men's and women’s teams, including the men’s basketball squad, which won the 1995 NCAA Championship. During his tenure in Westwood, the Bruins racked up 25 national championships and produced more than 100 All-Americans.

Alejo has also worked as a consultant for the San Jose Earthquakes Major League Soccer team (2010) and a short stint with the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team in 1993, prior to the 1994 World Cup.

Before joining the Bruins’ staff, Alejo served as strength and conditioning coach for football at his alma mater, Chico State, in 1983 and 1984. He earned his B.A. in physical education from Chico State in 1982, with an emphasis in biological sciences and pre-physical therapy.

“Bob Alejo was a big part of our national championship at UCLA,” said NC State Head Men’s Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried. “I respect him as much as any strength and conditioning coach in the nation and know he will do a phenomenal job with our players on a daily basis.” "
