DOMS like a motherfucker. >.<
Speaking of LFF, I am seriously getting sick of them. Which is sad, because I really liked that place.
But Jesus H. Christ, they called me AGAIN this week asking why I left.... IN JULY.
I F'ING MOVED!!!!!!!!! DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!
I kinda feel bad about flipping out a little on the guy who I'm sure was forced to call me, but he said he made a note that they should stop calling. That's what the last guy on the phone said!! 1/9/2011 2:30:43 PM |

Any runners came give me some advice? Im a "get up and go run" type girl on the weekends so I don't know if I should eat a later or heavier dinner the night before? Any suggestions would be great " |
I usually don't eat before runs (even 15 mile +) because it always give me the runz, but I do drink about a 1L portion of water the night before a long workout.
If this consistently happens then you want to try doing 1K splits as fast as possible and resting in between and running with others that are at a higher level so that they can "pull" you through it, but my best advice is to find a running group that has some people that are consistently faster than you (but don't pay for it).
Hope this helps.1/9/2011 3:07:03 PM |

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to try the sport beans and drinking 1L water before bed and see what happens. I was fine when I ran 6 miles so it was weird that one more mile would throw me off.
I'm not much of a "group" fitness/work out person. I like to go it alone and my time has definitely gotten better in the last couple of months.

Finally got a run in albeit slow. It felt good to get out there and run again after about a month's hiatus. I ran exactly 4 miles in 31:27.
My 4 mile norm is around 28 or less so I have to build up my running chops again. All in all, I'm pretty pleased that I kept under an 8 min/mile pace.
I think I'm going to take some work clothes to work and run there and back Tuesday. I might start doing that once or twice a week. My work is only 2.5 miles from where I live and it's cold enough so that I won't really need another shower when I get there. 1/9/2011 5:49:57 PM |

^^^ A lot of it is trial and error and finding out what your body needs, but I feel like my body performs differently everyday, even when the variables like sleep, diet, etc. are all the same. Some days my knee hurts more, some days it's harder to push up that hill or I get out of breath quicker on sprints.
There are obviously a lot of things you can do to change your routine and get your body in the zone it needs to be to lift or run or whatever, but if you're anything like me there are some things you just can't control (or haven't had enough experience with yet.)
That being said, I felt so good on my 10 miler this weekend that I ran an extra 0.8mile loop and still felt better than I did after the last 9 miler I ran! 1/10/2011 12:07:24 PM |

I want to focus on increasing the volume of leg training I do. I used to go crazy with leg workouts five years ago, doing squats, front squats, leg presses, extensions, leg curls, and SLDL's all in one workout. nowadays I'm doing half of that. I'm tempted to split legs into two separate days - one for quads and one for hamstrings, and add my ancillary arm workouts to those days instead of having a separate day for arms and shoulders. 1/10/2011 1:05:40 PM |

^ They are aggressive with their phone marketing campaign. Though maybe their sales and marketing plan dictates that they only contact women. Who knows?
Last time I got called by LFF to restart my membership, I told them I moved to a new part of town and couldn't rejoin the gym. At which point, the guy on the phone started asking me questions about Orlando/Winter Park because he was new to town. We talked for 15 minutes. And then he asked me on a date. Quite bizarre. Not sure if that was part of the marketing tactic, but it was engaging, nonetheless! 1/10/2011 3:50:47 PM |

When I canceled then moved, they called me at least once a week for awhile until I emailed them to stop calling me. I did end up transferring my membership to a friend who wanted one though 1/10/2011 4:24:05 PM |

Quinn, they let me do it in person but they first asked why, and I was like... "I'm moving 8 hours away and there are none down there." Then the girl said, "Oh, ok" and went ahead with the cancellation. 1/10/2011 7:07:13 PM |

LFF recently changed their policy so that all cancellations have to call and talk to a "membership retention specialist".
Sam is probably getting called because she canceled in person under the old format...hopefully, they'll stop calling. 1/10/2011 8:03:07 PM |

I pay $40 a month for a gym membership down in Charleston. There are two major gyms down here, and that's the best deal I could get for either. A far cry from all the gym deals I remember there being in Raleigh.
I'd love to be able to not be a member of a gym, but I don't have enough space in my house to hold the things I would like to be able to workout from home...and I'm just going to admit that I'm too much of a pussy to run when its 30 degrees outside or pouring rain.
One day when I get a bigger house I'll probably get rid of the gym membership...but its necessary now. 1/11/2011 12:19:23 PM |

you get used to the 30 degree weather. i used to be scared to run in anything below 55 degrees. now i prefer to run in the colder weather. you just have to be prepared - good running pants, good running jacket, hat for your head and ears, gloves, maybe a scarf.
i went running while it was flurrying yesterday and i wore heavy running pants, a tshirt, a running jacket (nothing too heavy), a pair of gloves (that i took off halfway through because i got hot), ear muffs (my ears hurt very bad in the cold) and a knit hat. and it was perfect. 1/11/2011 12:39:48 PM |
Fareako Shitter Pilot 10238 Posts user info edit post |
My advice on running in the cold is cover up your hands and your head/ears. The rest of you stays pretty warm when you trap the heat from your head with a cap. Also, you need to utilize the 20 degree rule when you run. The 20 degree rule states that before a run you should dress as if the temperature is 20 degrees warmer than it actually is. That will ensure that you don't over heat when you run. 1/11/2011 12:53:14 PM |
CassTheSass cupid 35382 Posts user info edit post |
oh that is good advice! thanks! luckily i have a jacket with a lot of zipper pockets so i can stash hats, gloves, etc as i warm up but that rule definitely helps because sometimes i do overdress when i run. 1/11/2011 12:55:01 PM |

^^I can agree with that. I'm usually fine in shorts when running in really cold weather. I might give the cold weather running a try. I used to really like running in it when I was younger. I've still got some old Under Armour cold weather gear that I use to run in when I was in college. 1/11/2011 1:03:36 PM |

Normally I run in basketball shorts and my long-sleeve, cold-weather under armour shirt, and some thin gloves. I normally don't wear a hat or head covering because I get too hot. That's just me, though.

My lower back has been really tight since I've started training hard again. PackMan92 told me it was because I need to stretch my legs and glutes. They were basically so tight that they were pulling on my lower back muscles and making it stiff/sore.
I want to stretch more, but when I get finished with a work out I'm just done. I need to get the discipline to stretch more. I'm pretty sore from two days of 60 to 90 minutes lifting sessions.
I plan on going to the gym today and doing chest and tomorrow doing legs and arms. I guess I'll also try to get a run in again since I haven't run since Sunday.1/12/2011 9:12:30 AM |

so i downloaded a new app on my iPhone called Nike Training Club. There's goals you choose: get lean, get toned, get strong, get focused, and then there's different work outs you can do (different times) and it talks you through it as if you had a personal trainer there. Everything is in either 30 second, 1 minute, or 2 minute intervals and it has videos and flash cards to show you how to do the exercise.
I did the "advanced" level because I work out 4-5 days a week and it totally kicked my butt. I was dying toward the end and I only did 30 minutes. 1/12/2011 10:43:32 AM |

^^ The "get focused" option advises you to get a prescription for adderall. Kidding. Sounds like a good app though! I might try that for toned or lean. Toned and lean mean the same thing to me though.
I'm obsessed with the Map My Run app.

That's definitely the case. I usually do yoga but haven't been able to make the time for it lately due to a crazy workload/teaching more classes. And when I skip yoga, I tend to skip stretching in general. Note to self...
