Got an Introducing the Beatles version 1 today in the best condition I have ever seen with either the cover or record. I only wish it was a stereo. But tomorrow is a new day.

Added some new things to my Discogs page if anybody wants to take a gander. Nothing major, but there's a decent, cheap copy of the Wall in there. I know some stores around here charge upwards of 30-40 dollars for that album. Laff.

You can get the fucking reissue for that.

To answer the previous question, the only records I've ever sold are things I bought around '98-'01 that I have no interest in listening to or things I bought on a whim and didn't like. Never a regret.

I'll see the album again. Wasn't a huge deal, but it was a flawless original pressing of a Julie London album. Nothing overly special but still wanted to keep it in retrospect.

I can only think of the crisp 5 dollar bill that lady would have gotten from any record store for that Beatles album I mentioned above, and that keeps me motivated to cut the stock of every dishonest predatory record store in the area.

Nice Price is usually good though, so shop there. They have a modest amount of things on eBay but I think only to stay afloat. So shop and sell there.

I want to bring in some of my most valuable albums to some if these others just so I can laugh at the offer.

There's some grey area there when you eBay a u2 album for 200 bucks that you've paid 2 in store credit for, but maybe I'm wrong about the really valuable things. Probably not though.

i hate it when stores put anything on ebay, especially when they now have the option of putting records on discogs and at least giving customers a chance to buy them in person. i've wanted so many records that nice price has put on ebay in the past... records i gladly would have paid the final ebay price for in person. all day has its shit right.

I think its the issue of being a record store in 2012.

they need to move alot of inventory which sometimes is to the detriment of people who actually shop at the physical store.

There's a sealed album that was bought at one of the record stores around here for 5 dollars and that really bothers me because the record is easily worth 300. That's basically stealing. I've never sold anything valuable to a record store, but if I did I would expect a negotiation similar to a pawn shop.

Again, there's a lot of gray area; I've certainly found some gems at the thrift shops before. But I really think there's a difference in someone donating to charity versus expecting fair payment from a store that specializes in the things you're selling. There is no defense for giving someone 5 dollars for the album in question and I have chosen not to do business with con artists after that.

As for the eBay thing, I guess I could point out the obvious and say that if you would pay the final prices then pay them. They've told me I could do that and pick things up at the store, but I understand your frustration. I think the Durham store does a fair assessment of things and I've definitely scored some good deals there on albums that they sometimes eBay.

I think it's dumb to call record stores that underpay for records predatory. for the most part, I would always offer more than usual if I knew a record was worth something, but it's still not going to be even close to what it might sell for online. how else is the store gonna make money?

listing things on ebay/discogs can be a pain in the ass, especially having to deal with the people that buy it, boxing and shipping the records (even worse if sold overseas), paypal. if someone doesn't feel like doing that, then that's fine. but they shouldn't be surprised if a record store isn't gonna pay top dollar for it.

I don't think I ever paid anyone $5 for an album that was sold for $300... but I think you can argue that even if someone (the Internet) thinks an album is worth $300, doesn't mean it will actually sell for that much... record stores are taking risks by buying records. sometimes they get lucky. one time I paid a guy $500 for a box of first pressings of every Sonic Youth related release (and tons of other good shit). he got a good deal. we probably ended up making about $1,000 profit off of it, but it took a few months to get there.

The album in question was something anybody should know is valuable but the only thing I'm discounting is the seller's assumed stupidity. There's definitely albums you're gambling on but this one was hands down a no-brainer worth hundreds. the sonic youth thing definitely seems fair, and that's good business. Different ballpark on what I'm talking about.

I gave all mine away; most had original sleeves. I think i had nearly all of them, including some on Swan and the like before the Capitol ones. It depends on what condition they're in. To me personally unless they were unplayed or otherwise mint, they aren't worth shit...

it still comes in a big package with all the extra artwork and all that. i don't think you can just get the LPs for $20-30 like you could with the other reissues.

I realize that most things you buy pressed to vinyl these days has a digital component in there somewhere, as it's hard to avoid and remasters don't tend to stay loyal to an antiquated method of remastering. It's just too time-consuming and a pain...

That being said, the Beatles LPs that just came out today are basically:

I think sounding "better" is debatable, but "slightly different", sure. They're still from the same digital source. But you can spend all day on that conversation...unless there's some gimmick these days that gets me to buy the vinyl, or having one signed at shows or something, I'm pretty hesitant not to just get the CD and be done with it.

PS I can deal with Beatles stuff, because I have the entire catalog and then some, and there's so much out there that are complete AAA recordings, that if they want to keep remastering and remastering these things, then go ahead; they won't be getting my money but definitely somebody else's. However, it REAAALLLY irks me when they do this shit with reissues on the rare things - stuff hard to find in good condition, and when you do find it, the album is pricey, pricey, pricey. This really defeats me.

Just picked up the Love - Forever Changes reissue for Record Store Black Friday. If anyone is unfamiliar with this band or album, I would HIGHLY recommend getting this LP; especially if you've recently broken up with someone or feel contemplative. Regardless of that, this has been in my top 10 albums for a LONG time. Like the others (Tame Impala - Lonerism, I have the US press, the signed UK press, and the deluxe UK edition AND the CD), I have like 4 or 5 copies of this album. Hahaha, make fun of me. whatever...

Gonna be having a HUGE vinyl sale at the D-Town Market at Motorco in Durham in March. There won't be any duds; I've weeded out the Streisands, Alperts and Ferrante and Teichers. Lots of singles for 1-2 bucks, and albums for around 3 or so.

Will update when I get a date set, but if you're looking for some straight up good music for cheap, this will be for you.

Just reading through some of the past posts where I mentioned record stores being predatory over what they offer versus what they sell for - I think it was a pretty myopic stance I was taking, and probably stems from an issue I have with a certain record store in the area that essentially masks its dumb prices with the stupidity of the ignorant. Anyway, based on personal experience, selling on eBay is a pretty rigorous pain in the ass when you have tons of records to sell. As a store, however, selling is your sole responsibility. I have a full-time job and still manage to get stuff listed almost daily. I had one crazy album go for almost $500 that I had to ship to the UK, but it still wasn't that much of a pain in the ass. I like to be honest with the people I buy these things from, but you're right. Sometimes, it is a total shot in the dark. I would have never guessed the record in question would be worth anything near what it went for. I just try to keep it honest, and I don't think making money or making record collecting a job is the way to go. For me, it's more an experiment to get good music to the people who most appreciate it.
