Haha, I completely forgot about this, but this is not the first time Microsoft had to show us how to interact with Windows using a "surface" ...

Taking us all the way back to Windows 3.1:

Quote :
"When you move the mouse across a surface, an arrow-shaped pointer moves across the computer screen."

http://ardvaark.net/win-31-review#Learning_Windows

So what happens when you move a mouse across a Surface?

Yeah, I do feel pretty clever for that one.

Reposting for Page 8:

Quote :
"So what is it that Windows 8 has that Windows 7 has that is worth the upgrade?"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Features_new_to_Windows_8

The shit I use on a daily basis that makes it worth the upgrade (and honestly even the full retail price) for me:

The massively improved multi-mon support. Taskbar support (extended taskbar and dedicated taskbar modes), pinning, wallpaper span, open-to-screen.

The improved window management support (cascade, stacked, SxS for any number of windows)

Windows Explorer: native mounting for ISO and VHD images. conflict management for file copying. file copy progress dialogs (Yay for PAUSE!)

Native USB3 support for massively improved transfer and data speeds

File History - Actual, configurable, journaled incremental file backup that happens in realtime. No more fiddling with volume shadow copy or windows backup scheduling. It just works.

UEFI boot management - way easier to multi-boot, recovery and system reset options are awesome.

hyper-v: Having a native hypervisor built in to windows is worth the upgrade all by itself. hyper-v works flawlessly, and I use it everyday to native boot from VHD between my multiple Win8 installs (keeping my dev VM isolated).

Outlook doesn't have access to live tiles and can't put notification on the lock screen?

What!

(They also say multiple-monitor users should maybe not upgrade. Hmmmm)

Should I do dual boot, or upgrade?

I did dual boot between XP and Vista and the XP side ended up being a barren wasteland that had to download like 11,000 updates whenever I brought it up....which was only to use a bootleg piece of software I had been unable to find again.

Can anyone who has used it expand on why arstechnica said multi-monitor users might want to hold-off?

i have no idea what they're talking about. i've been using win8 rtm on a multimonitor setup and i haven't noticed anything particularly annoying about it

Yeah I have no idea either. One of the reasons I have kept win8 on my work desktop is because of how much better the multi monitor support is.

there's an issue if you have multiple touch monitors that it'll register a touch on either monitor as being only on the main monitor

dunno if that's fixed or not in the release

Cool, I need a new laptop and am probably going to get a hybrid device.

Very very disappointed to learn that Outlook doesn't have a live tile, hopefully they fix that soon.

It may not have a live tile, but you do get notifications in via the same system toasts with Outlook 2013.

Something about IE10. The people that run this database would rather all the users never upgrade their equipment, or use a tablet, or a smartphone, than use current technology that would make the lives simpler for their subscribers.

You can not log in from any browsers besides IE, it wont let you.

I just tried it and it butchered the page, can not even get any links to work, was going to take a screenshot but cant find paint on windows 8.

I just tried the new version that is in beta and it let me login and looks like it will work. I bet they end up rushing that transition since they are going to have to.

So, I decided to give Windows 8 a spin on my main laptop.

Fuck MS. Fuck them to fucking hell. Right out of the God damned box, my wifi won't connect to my router. I even took the password off of it. Nope. Not a fucking difference. It worked without ANY problem on Windows 7. Went to Intel's website for a Windows 8 driver> Installed it. No fucking difference. I even tried Intel's wireless management. It simply refused to work. I even tried tethering to my phone. Not a damn difference.

Seriously, how could MS fuck up something this basic? Adapter worked on Windows 7, now it doesn't work on Windows 8.

Fuck you MS. Go fuck yourself with a big stick. I'm going to go out of my way to direct everyone away from this pile of shit even more. I wish I could uninstall Windows 8 without having to reformat.

I guess I will go ahead and install whatever updates are available. Then pound my computer some more and curse MS, put it off until tomorrow and depending on how that goes, possibly be back on Windows 7 by Sunday.

So I reformatted, I was running Windows 8 with the default windows driver and the wifi still doesn't fucking install!

I'm going to see what I get from Windows Update.

Seriously, this is the most pathetic shit I've ever experienced from a new version of Windows. This laptop is barely a year old too.

^^ is the driver installed or not? If you can put in the WiFi password, your wireless card is probably working just fine. Did you try rebooting your router?

I'll bet you dollars to cents this isn't a problem with windows 8, that it's something going on with the router.

Is there anything else that runs on these updated atom chips? I'm trying to decide if its fast enough to use as an only device for everything except CAD. Don't mind breaking out the work station when I need it, but I need something that will usually be good enough. Should I get something with a non-atom or wait for reviews?

I just got an SSD and am planning on blowing out my computer and reinstalling everything. I am trying to decide if I should stick with Win 7 or jump up to Win 8. I can get 8 through work, so cost is not a consideration on this, merely whether 8 is better or sucks versus 7. I am currently running single screen at home and no touch panel or anything like that, so that is not a plus for me on going to 8. Thoughts?

Neon, the driver is installed. I have the latest one from Intel that was released yesterday for Windows 8.

Right before I restarted my laptop my WiFi was working perfectly. My tablet connects to it just fine, as does my other laptop, my desktop and my iPhone. My laptop will connect fine over Ethernet. I also did try restarting my router and updating the firmware for it. It still works fine with everything else. I'm sorry, but if my router worked with 5/5 devices and now after putting windows 8 back on it that lone device doesn't work now, how could it suddenly be the router?

I'm going to go out and buy a little USB WiFi card for my laptop. If the WiFi works, we know it is Windows/driver (though the driver should work, as I've tried 4 different drivers)

^because I had the same issue upgrading my iPad to iOS6, upgrading several android devices and upgrading my laptop to windows 8 developer and release previews. One of my routers (netgear wnr3500l) just would not work with the upgraded devices. I ended up having to do a full reset on the netgear router to get it to work with those devices again.

My other router, an Asus 56u worked just fine. I'm telling you 99.5% chance this is yet another example of shitty netgear routers.

On the windows machine, "forget" the network for your wireless network. Just completely remove that profile.
Then do a full factory reset on the router (hold the reset button on the back for 10seconds, let it reboot, power it off unplugged for 30sec, replug)

See if it works. I'll bet it will.

It was free, so I'm liking the switch to 8 (bought an SSD, good excuse to upgrade).

Although I really wish I could switch which corner the start menu was in. Being able to pin the start menu to the taskbar would fix me up.

^Are you fucking kidding me? If you use paint, PIN it to the taskbar or start menu. For fucks sake, 5 keystrokes to get exactly what you want takes less than 1/2 a second.

I almost always hit the windows key and type pai and then enter for paint, takes like 1.5 seconds. That shit is way faster than going to the start menu and mousing over the thing you want. (note for notepad, calc for calculator, etc)

^^Then go install a start menu. It's not easier. It takes longer, requires more effort, and is less efficient in every measurable way to "open paint". Quit being pedantic.

I follow this pattern for cmd, calc, notepad, write, iexplore, and mstsc

for apps not included in the OS, I use quick launch.

I had to test some stuff with win2k12 at work. this UI is a complete cluster fuck of shit for back end server config

What convertible devices have pen input? The Lenovo Yoga 13 is beautiful but doesn't come with a digitizer pen. I'm worried the tablet might not be powerful enough

Is the Samsung Ativ SmartPC line the only Win8 device available now with a pen?
