longo got a six year, multi-million deal. andrus is not 21. not sure where all these random numbers are coming from.

lester, romero and gallardo all signed to multi-year, multi-million deals last year before they were eligible for arbitration (yes, at a slightly higher age, but not by much). granted, they are pitchers, so more valuable to lock up early than a middle infielder, but it's still not unheard of (nor do i think it's a terrible idea, regardless of how often teams actually do it... see how well it has worked out for tampa).

[Edited on October 20, 2011 at 10:54 PM. Reason : ^^ forgot about tulo. braun's a good example as well.]

His 21-year-old season was last year.

Longoria signed his deal after his 24-year-old season. Huge difference. Longo finished 6th in MVP voting that year. Andrus OPS was .643 last year!

You're suggesting that they sign him to a deal now, when there's no incentive to? How would that possibly save money when he hits free agency? High risk, zero reward. If it's "not unheard of", name that last 22 year-old Venzualean to have his entire arbitration period bought out. Braun was also 25. Tulo was 23, but might be the best hitting SS of all-time. Both are franchise players, Andrus is not.

the more they show that throw from center field the worse it looks.

both braun and longoria had less mlb experience. i'm not saying they have to give dude 8 years at $40 million, but he's a damn good shortstop that they'd be smart to lock up for a while. no, he's not hitting 30 homers a year like tulowitzki, but he's got a great glove, steals bases and scores runs. and he's likely just going to get better before he hits free agency, thus the reward is to lock him up before his price increases (same thing the rays did with longoria).

who cares that he's venezuelan or younger? the point is not age or nationality, but time until he's eligible for free agency.

thought he signed that deal in 2008 when he was only 21?

a-rod was probably putting up better numbers at the same age

They've got him for three years and he'll be getting a good raise this offseason. They also have Jurickson Profar in the minors who should be ready by the time Andrus hits free agency.

Again, zero incentive.

[Edited on October 20, 2011 at 11:09 PM. Reason : You're right about Longoria. But he's still immensely more valuable than Andrus]

Well, he'd have to be reasonably close to consider signing him to such a stupid deal.

what'd be really ironic is TLR moving the game away from the whole closer mentality thing considering he's the one who's largely responsible for it in the first place. good thing this shit has permeated the game for the last 20 fucking years.

because he is credited with having a "cerebral" approach to the game, but all he does is overmanage the shit out of situations and gets tons and tons of praised heaped on him for it. he was a big part of MATCHUPS becoming a thing and is largely the reason why you see 4 and 5 pitchers per game and why games are starting to take fucking forever due to all the pitching changes. everyone was sucking his dick this morning in the media for what happened last night, but his exact same bullshit cost the cardinals a game in st louis after motte gave up a bloop and a standard single.

his pitching strategies often ignore the problems of extremely small sample sizes and the fact that even the best hitters in the game will fail 7 out of 10 times. when his shit works, he's a genius. when it doesn't, no one says a thing.

ESPN guys (Larkin and Schilling) blamed him for the loss last night/this morning.

And let's get this thread back to talking about the series.

Why would anybody take anything off if that throw by Holliday? By saying things like "bad slide"?

Got those runs back, guy!
