I thought TDT really opened things up by dragging Len out to the perimeter. Would have liked to see us try him again in the second half

That was a good win for us. We still have to win these next three of course.

Howell struggled against the size and he didn't rebound but he wasn't terrible other than the layup miss

Lots of missed fouls on Maryland down low. thought it was poorly officiated but not to the point where it went against us.

Gottfried is a solid coach.

One ref was allowing Maryland to sub and was giving time for the player to get off the court, but another official at the other end thought play had resumed, saw 6 players and was getting ready to call the tech. Just a misunderstanding between 2 refs

i thought, honestly, it was poorly officiated, it turned out at the end the fouls were both 18 for each team but look how many times MD fouled to send us to the line, they were in the bonus+ before we were in the bonus. Lots of over the back calls. what i liked is that we played like we didn't care. I don't even think i saw us mouth off at the refs either all that much, under Lowe it looked it was a contest to see who could bitch the most often while the other team was going back for a layup.

Agreed, but Maryland was getting raped under their basket late in the game.

How about that Maryland player squaring up to the ref after getting a foul called on him. true enough he wasn't chest to chest with the ref, but it still looked pretty aggressive imo.

1) glad they are turning the ribbon board off during introductions this year. It's actually dark now.

2) is the student section behind the visitors bench not allowed to stand up? If not, that's super lame. Also kids these days don't know how to stay loud. Place got quiet way too often during play.

3) those officials were terrible. Letting us inbound the ball with 6 maryland players on the court then not calling a technical is ridiculous. Bush league.

4) calvin leslie is a man amongst boys.

Two rows of student seating in 118 in front of the hockey boards are not allowed to stand due to RBC Center rule

Good point. Our guys were very poised. #14 for MD on the other hand should have been given a tech on a couple of occasions. Dude looked like a whiney little bitch out there.

Howell's put-back jam was a thing of beauty. I don't think fat Richard Howell could dunk that ball on an eight-foot goal.

Great comments from Gott.

Quote :
"RALEIGH -- N.C. State talked big before its first ACC game. On Sunday against Maryland, the Wolfpack took the first step in backing it up.

Eleven league wins and the NCAA tournament are the team's goals, coach Mark Gottfried said before the game and repeated again after a 79-74 win over the Terrapins on Sunday night at the RBC Center.

With 20 points and 11 rebounds from C.J. Leslie, Gottfried won his first ACC game, and in the process, ended a nine-game losing streak to the Terps.

Gottfried wasn't interested in backpedaling from his pre-game public proclamations or slipping into coachspeak.

"That's our goal. I'm not afraid to say it," Gottfried said.

State hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2006, the longest drought in the ACC, and only five times in the past 20 years. It has lost at least 10 conference games in each of the past five seasons and has won 11 games in the ACC only once since 1975.

"It's a tall order for our team, let's be real honest," Gottfried said. "Let's keep our eye on the ball and figure out where we've been. We all know in this room where this program has been."

State (12-4, 1-0 ACC) had been abused by Maryland since the 2005-06 season. With coach Gary Williams retired and Jordan Williams and Greivis Vasquez safely in the NBA, it's not the same Maryland program under first-year coach Mark Turgeon, but the Terps still have Terrell Stoglin.

Stoglin, the ACC's leading scorer, turned in 25 points, but the sophomore guard could only do so much against a balanced State scoring effort. Scott Wood (19 points) did his damage from the free-throw line late while Maryland rallied in vain. Lorenzo Brown tallied 11 points and Rich Howell added 10.

"It's definitely the first step for us," Howell said. "This win should give us some confidence."

The Pack started to create separation with 10 minutes left in the game. Forward DeShawn Painter's dunk in transition on one of nine assists by Brown gave State a 56-51 lead.

The Pack outscored the Terps 13-2 during the 4-minute stretch, getting a three-point play from Painter, another from Leslie on an acrobatic follow and a 3-pointer from the left corner by Williams.

Brown's putback at the 5-minute mark widened State's margin to 67-53. Then the Pack went cold and Stoglin kept firing.

Freshman forward Alex Len (12 points) whittled State's lead to 67-62 with one minute, 53 seconds left.

State went from Brown's last field goal to the 1:30 mark without scoring but Wood and Williams closed the game out from the free-throw line.

"We knew to get the ball to Scott," Brown said.

Wood went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and has made all 37 of his tries this season.

Gottfried said there were still some end-game situations that needed to be ironed out and that the number of turnovers (13) must be reduced. But the win was a good start towards the team's very public goals.

"I didn't come here to play in anything other than the NCAA tournament," Gottfried said. "Now, whether we get there or not, that's a whole 'nother story. We do probably do have a long, long way to go but I'm not ever going to hide from that.""

I, too, thought the game was very poorly officiated. Calvin looked like he was getting hugged/held on every ncsu possession. As it turned out, the officiated ended up bad for both teams.

1-0 is a great feeling and doing it against a team we haven't beaten in 5 years is nice. Can't wait to watch this season unfold.

"This matchup lost a bit of juice with the offseason retirement of ex-Maryland coach Gary Williams. During the press conference last April that introduced Gottfried as coach, N.C. Huge win for us. It is confirmed that stoglin is gilchrist 2.o, and Len is as good as any Zeller in my book (based off of watching one game of course).

I hope this win doesn't mean that we show up flat against Ga Tech.

Just got back from the game:

It was my first hoops game in two years and it was great to be back in there. Good atmosphere (not perfect, but still solid), looked ~85% full to me, fans and students were into the game the whole time, but you could cut the tension with a knife in the last two minutes.

I was so stoked to be sitting behind the Maryland bench so I could give Gary Williams shit all game, until I was reminded 5 minutes before tipoff that he retired last season

All the military stuff was pretty well done. The green berets rappelling from the rafters was a first for me. It was really funny that they lined up all the old WWII vets during a tv break and tried to shuffle them off the court quickly afterwards, only to realize how slow old people move and the game was held up for two minutes on account of arthritis.

Officiating was piss poor. The foul on wood, all the over-the-backs ignored, the missed 5-second call, the 6 men on the court sham, the Howell blocking foul, a foot on the baseline that was wrong that Maryland bought by crying, and a complete lack of technicals on their douchebag coach. He was totally out-of-line on a number of occasions. I counted 10 points (two three-pointers off plays where there should have been a turnover, the free throws from the Wood foul, the free throws from the Howell blocking foul) that the refs straight handed to Maryland.

When State pushes the floor with numbers, they are very good at getting transition points. I think our transition is as good as the Heels for the first time since pre-Sendek times.

The comment about State's discipline was spot on. Visibly frustrated by the refs, neither the coaches or the players stopped working hard to overcome. I thought the team carried themselves very professionally, which was the complete opposite of the circus going on at the other bench.

Painter's free-throwing and all-around ability is much improved. When Howell went out early with two fouls I really thought we were fucked and while painter still needs to finish better in the post, his minutes should only go up. I think AJ has also really improved mid-season. TDT is getting there, he reminds me of Horner. Brown was all-around superb. Howell's long-range jump shots were quite impressive and Wood found ways to stay active without the threes going down.

It was a great game to be at for a State fan.

TDT is nothing like Horner.

Horner was weak, slow and was just a matchup problem on the wing as far as 3 point shooting goes.

TDT is strong for a freshman, can rebound and box out and actually plays defense. Horner was the worst defender we had on that team. Dude could never finish inside either.

^Just part of the media conspiracy to hold us down.

I don't want to oversell him, but TDT's drive last night reminded me of Matt Harpring. He blew by their center and did a good job of getting his shot up to the rim. It was a surprisingly athletic move.

I emailed Yow about a situation in section 112 (iirc). I would suggest emailing Yow about the situation of not being able to stand behind the opponents bench because that is BULLSHIT! I remember being a student and forcing a team to switch from taking their timeouts on the sideline to taking them out in the middle of the floor because we were being so loud and obnoxious... Fuck the RBC center and their nazi bullshit.

fwiw here is a direct quote from her about the situation I ran into in 112 "We will discuss ways to remedy this with the ushers, as well, since students will always be allowed to stand." I am pretty sure she would be receptive of these complaints and probably sort it out shortly. Especially if you told her that you weren't allowed to stand and yell at those assholes from Maryland.

ESPNU content is handled differently than ESPN/2 content, I guess, even with replays

and with the behind the bench thing, it's so the visiting parents which are now all to the right of that section are still able to see the court.

The obvious charge that was called a block (on Howell otherwise known as the Jacket incident) and the complete unwillingness of the refs to T up the Maryland coaching staff or players when they acted like complete bitches would seem to indicate otherwise.

There was no State vendetta. They were just shitty refs. Seemed like they were unsure about every call they made, so they eventually stopped calling anything.
