i thought it was interesting when that girl's husband said "so it was you, she always spreads her legs for the first sap..."

i guess she fools around on him a lot and when she starts doing it again he sends her off for electroshock?

I got the impression that these were routine treatments because she was actually somewhat crazy

not punitive due to her infidelities. I can see that being the case and making this guy basically not want to come home to her. Hes not just letting her rot in her craziness either, so i think there is love there for Beth.

He (Howard) seems like a dude that is trying to forget, just like pete described at length in the hospital

btw, might've been brought up already, but the hitfix mad men episode reviews are really good:

i enjoyed the finale thoroughly

but I was braced and prepared to see a majority of disapproving reviews, which honestly I would understand but not personally agree with

so its good that there are reviewers that appreciate the finale

I didn't like Beth at all. I felt like the actress watched a few episodes from old seasons and then decided to act just like Betty Draper rather than make an effort.

I'd like to talk about how the characters may develop over the next break.

Do you think we'll continue to see more of Peggy, or was the theater scene her goodbye? Will Giensberg climb the ladder at all? Will Pete and his wife still be together or separated? Does Roger just occasionally do LSD, or is he the character used to express the drug experimentation of the late 60s, etc....

Peggy will be prominent, as she is going to come up with "You've come a long way, baby" for Virginia Slims.

Have they credited them with any real ads yet? I'd love to see them come up with th Apple 1984 ad in season 17.

wasnt the life cereal "eat life by the bowlful" or whatever used in a real ad

I would like to see what Sal is up to next season

^^ Good point. Maybe Peggy will be unable to deliver on the cigarette ad and have a meltdown or something.

So can we expect Season 6 to return to the normal summer premier pattern and we have to wait until July of '13?

not so fast my friend

"Last year, when they were going for the Virginia Slims account and lost it, it occurred to me that if ever there was a person in the "Mad Men" universe who deserved to write a real-life slogan, it was Peggy with "You've come a long way, baby." She couldn't do that at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce; now she can. I assume that thought has occurred to you as well.

Matthew Weiner: We were always interested in this early Virginia Slims thing. We loved the fact that it was a small, undesirable product for everybody, and it of course became a pretty big success. But that's such a famous campaign written by such a distinctive person that I would never do that. "

yea i cant imagine that weiner would ever do that its just too difficult to suspend disbelief

i like that he slides SCDP into things without actually changing history. Like Conrad secretly meeting with Don about branding his hotels and ending it before anything happened. Also that letter earlier in the season that Pete was interviewed for, and they wound up snubbing SCDP by publishing the article with no mention of the company and pete was allm pissed off. That was actually a real letter i thought that was clever

It would be tough to swallow that a fictional character was directly responsible for a documentable slogan

I'd love to see Don do an emotional pitch of "Once you pop, you can't stop" in the Pringles meeting.

That after years of trying to be one of the boys, as the person in charge she can finally just be feminine?

Just look at how she dresses now vs at sdcp

i get what youre saying

but i cant fathom why she would finally want to be "feminine" unless she lost her drive

which i cant imagine she would ever do. Chaugh (sp?) is still calling the shots and telling her how to come up with ideas for a product

i wonder whats gonna happen with Abe, i still think shes going to wind up carrying him and hell have no choice but to be what megan is being accused of doing, being comfortable and not beign gainfully employed in favor of pursuing personal interests (social issues)

the reason that this guy gives is what I disagree with, because I cant see her being satisfied with what she has currently. Therefore, she will continue to have that masculine aspiration she always had. If she were to say "man I like where I am at now I can relax and focus on other needs in life as opposed to just work" then I would get it.

But there is no way in hell shes content. I cant agree that the make up is because she is content. Hell, she tells don to keep her in the rolodex. Shes always going to be one of the boys. I dont know, just my take...I cant see the increase in makeup and the way she dresses as her being feminine because of her "elevated" career status

shes always WANTED to be feminine, but shes way too much of a professional to be comfortable so thats not what I meant my bad

^^Joan didnt have a problem going home and being a wife/gf and for the longest time was not ambitious about advancing her career. We all know joan is the definition of feminine what is your point? In fact she is the foil to Peggy

^its pretty much the only show i watch so i think about it alot, im a sucker for mindless gags theres no other show that has enough of them to satisfy me

Just started watching this show with the fiance, went back to the Season 1 thread and found this comment that sums it up nicely:

Quote :
"My wife and I are 4 episodes into S1 now, and I'm getting the same impression. For me, it's actually not bad. Not great, but not bad. I don't mind the slow pace (then again, i'm the kind of person who can listen to NPR and PBS for hours on end), and I find enough pleasure in "period details", i.e. all the differences between the 60s and today. However, I can't say that I'm being sucked in by the plot or characters yet.

My wife, though, is bored out of her mind. All the 1960's novelties aren't enough to keep her attention, unless something else starts happening. So, 1/3 of the way through S1 and i'm not convinced yet it's the best show of last year yet - is there more in S1 we can look forward to? Is there gonna be some drama?"

Only way I'm keeping her on the show is by reminding her how Game of Thrones started off pretty slow and that she was hooked by the end...just kind of a "give a chance, people love this show" kind of argument. Don't know how much longer it will work though.

Just hoping Season 1 ends on a high note, or I don't know if I can get her to watch the remaining seasons.
