Sat in turn two for the cup race. Froze my ass off for a boring ass race. Hard to keep track of who was on the lead lap after a large number of day beers. First time at the track and did enjoy myself considering the circumstances. Would definitely go back (especially if it's free again). 4/30/2012 7:36:32 PM |

my unpopular solution for the plate tracks would be to remove the plate as well as the spoiler and splitter. The driver would be forced to slow down for the turn just like any other track and speeds would not get too high. Or maybe take the plates off and just add a chicane or two. 5/6/2012 11:06:32 AM |

A chicane would be a surefire recipe for wrecks in NASCAR. They can't even handle the one at Watkins Glen without massive pileups, and they're 50mph slower than they would be on a super speedway coming up on that turn. If you cram 40-some cars coming into a chicane on a restart, bad things will happen.5/6/2012 12:57:24 PM |
beatsunc All American 10748 Posts user info edit post |
^if you made it a first gear chicane there may be wrecks but at least they would be low speed and not the 190 mph straight into the wall like plate tracks now. you could also design it have room to go around it in case you need to avoid a wreck or you are going to fast to make. of course you couldnt pass in that situation. 5/6/2012 1:10:41 PM |

Another reporter pressed on, asking Stewart if he preferred the pack racing over the tandem racing.
"I think we ought to make it a Figure Eight (race)," he said. "I mean, if we could make it a Figure Eight, it would be perfect. It would absolutely be perfect here. It'd be better than what we've got."
At this point, I'll admit it: I could hardly contain myself. I was covering up my mouth giving every effort possible not to laugh in his face.
But Stewart wasn't done yet.
"Or we could stop at halfway, take a break, then turn around and go backward," he said. "Then, with 10 to go, we could split the field and half of them could go in the regular direction and half could go backward."

I'm hearing a lot of disgust on Twitter about the "sandbagging" that occurred segments 2-4.
Maybe next year they should line them up based on # of laps led for the final segment and get rid of Johnson, Kenseth, and Keselowski riding in the back of the field and just trying not to get lapped.
Obviously NASCAR is not scared of changing the format, but the last 10 laps were boring. Also, instead of a 20-20-20-20-10 sequence, they should do 15-15-15-15-30 or 20-20-20-20-30 and actually make it long enough to make a pass in the final segment. Or make the last segment longer than a fuel run (they're bound to be cautions) and still not count the caution laps. 5/21/2012 12:29:29 PM |

^^^ I heard something on the way home last night on SiriusXM NASCAR.
Their idea was to award points (race points, not championship points) for each segment.
43 for 1st 42 for 2nd etc.
after each segment, invert the field, line them up for pit stops and then go racing (with the starting order based on how they come out of pit stops). essentially, the best average finish over the segments wins. This was the best idea I have heard to ensure racing the entire time. 5/22/2012 11:45:42 AM |

Raced in F1: Barrichello, Sato, Wilson, Bourdais, Alesi Raced in NASCAR Cup: Franchitti, Clauson (once)
Quote : | "Your best bets to win: Briscoe, Hinchcliffe, Hunter-Reay, Andretti, Power, Castroneves Not favorites, but not longshots either: Newgarden, Kanaan, Tagliani, Dixon, Franchitti, Hildebrand If all the cards fall right, we’re Arie Luyendyk in 1990: Viso, Barrichello, Rahal, Beatriz, Kimball, Sato Good drivers in not so good cars: Bell, Bourdais, Pagenaud, Servia, Carpenter They’re starting: Jakes, Wilson, Jourdain, Saavedra, Cunningham, Conway, Legge, Clauson, de Silvestro, Alesi
Going off speeds and engines, it’s hard to look past Team Penske and Andretti Autosport. Power you have to say is a favorite but there’s something about him on ovals that just doesn’t seem to click in comparison to how well he does with road courses. Briscoe, eh, for a Penske driver I just don’t rate him much although granted, he took pole. I think Penske’s best chance to win is still Castroneves. The 3 Andretti drivers are all very even at least at the track. Hunter-Reay has struggled mightily at Indy in past years while Andretti does pretty well at the track (2nd, 3rd, 3rd, and 9th in 6 starts).
Newgarden’s a difficult rank. His “rookieness” that makes him fast can also make him more likely to crash. There’s a lot of unknowns in this race due to this being the first oval race of the year and with these cars and engines. He’s either in group 2 or group 3 and I wouldn’t argue anyone that thinks he should be lower. Kanaan, Dixon, and Franchitti none of whom I’d bet on winning as other teams are better, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it occurred due to their experience and the fastest car doesn’t always win. Hildebrand is in the group because Panther Racing has somewhat miraculously finished 2nd the last 4 years in a row with 3 different drivers (Vitor Meira, Dan Wheldon twice, and Hildebrand).
The 3rd group is a post-race “that guy won, really?” category as Luyendyk when he won in ’90 was in a midfield team and had never won a championship auto race in his career. Viso is quick but I think he’ll be a crash based on reputation. Barrichello I can’t see winning but I imagine he’ll be steady and running at the finish somewhere high. Rahal and Kimball are there for Ganassi, Beatriz is there for Andretti, and Sato has improved this year.
Bell took the car he’s in this year to 4th a couple years ago. But with his poor form in qualifying, getting vertigo on Sunday when he meant to practice all day, don’t think his car is quick enough. Ditto his teammate Pagenaud. Bourdais and Servia have had too little practice time after transferring from Lotus to Chevrolet. And Carpenter is pretty quick at the speedway but like some others has not been able to figure it out this year.
The 5th group is just the “filling out the grid” group. The driver it’s harshest to is probably Wilson, but in Wilson’s case he’s never really figured out Indy and this year he’s with Dale Coyne’s team." |

Sounds like something Kenseth would win.
Go back in time and tell the promoter to keep it simple stupid.
Segment 1: 35 laps, after which there's a randomized invert Segment 2: 25 laps, then you have a caution where people can pit if they so choose Segment 3: 10 laps5/22/2012 12:40:37 PM |
