This team has two top 10 picks. That 2012-13 hoops team was over hyped from the beginning. Brown is the only pro from that group, and pro is being generous. They at least pounded UNC and Duke while making the Dance.

Avent shit himself much more this year than Gott that year.

This year has been super disappointing, but much like 2012-2013's basketball team, we were overrated in the media from the get-go. We lost about half our pitching, our corner infielders and two-thirds of our outfield, which happened to be a huge chunk of our leadership. We also had some bad breaks and unfortunate injuries to our bullpen, but that's been overshadowed by poor play and poor coaching decisions.

As far as the players themselves, even one dude in a seven man basketball rotation is probably gonna make a much bigger difference than two guys on a baseball team that has a couple dozen contributors.

Beat Radford 6-1. Brett Austin had a career high 4 RBI's. He added a solo homer late in the game.

^^^ Fair points, but I think most expected guys like Stone & Jernigan to take some minor steps forward so we wouldn't have to rely on our bullpen as much. Instead they went the other direction. If you'd told me before the season that Knizner and Palmeiro were going to have the type of seasons they have I would've thought our offense would have improved as well. Just an unbelievably frustrating season.

I just want to say this, college baseball is a lot more important than jbrick83 makes it out to be.

Carlos Rodon is going to be a MLB stud barring a career ending injury and is going to represent NCSU.

Trea Turner could as well. How could you say it doesn't fucking matter? We play in the ACC.

It definitely matters to people who care, which is a minority of the fanbase. During our shitty football season and up-and-down bball season, I just kept telling myself "at least we'll be good in baseball." Well ... not so much.

I still feel like we've got some good mojo going our way, despite the loss last night. If we can just sneak in the ACC Tourney, I feel like we can do some big things.

If we sweep VT, we would tie GT at 14-16, most likely pass Wake who has UVA, and could catch UNC who is @ Miami.

If we sweep and Wake goes 1-2 we get them on head to head winning the series.

Pitt is at Notre Dame so they could easily sweep them. Clemson has BC so we can't catch them.

Yeah. Frustrating part is that they were both excellent at times this year but were both wildly inconsistent (not that that's anything new for Jernigan). We'd have been really screwed this year without the Petersons.

Not really. Again, it's two guys. Based on some scouting/draft projections I've seen, those are our only surefire losses (besides Thomas and Woeck, of course). I'm sure a couple of the other juniors will end up leaving too, but it sounds like many of them may not be drafted high enough that they'll get bonuses that will compel them to do so. Our pitching is gonna suffer, but if we only lose a couple position players from our lineup, that'd be better than expected. We're supposed to have a another solid freshman class coming in too, and apparently Gareth Morgan is the only one who's being projected high enough in the draft that he likely won't make it to campus.

I don't know how much worse I see State's record being next season. They lose Rodon, but as well as he's pitched this season it isn't like its done much good for the team record-wise. Losing Turner hurts the offensive production the team has been able to put up this season - as marginal as its been, but we have a pretty solid class coming in (at least position player-wise) from what I've read, and they should help fill out the lineup with Kninzer, Palmeiro, and whoever else we have left in the lineup after this season.

haha, nevermind (no I don't follow baseball closely).

Don't we have some guy committed for next yer that may forfeit college and go pro? i was thinking it was Palmeiro.

EDIT: It's A-Rod's nephew I was thinking about, not Rafael's son.

If nothing else, he usually gives us 8-9 innings where we don't have to worry about using any of our bullpen.

This is the stuff about next year's class and their draft prospects I referred to earlier (per Scout's national baseball analyst):

Quote :
"Canadian OF Gareth Morgan should go in the 2nd-3rd round and turn pro, but the rest of the recruiting class has a solid chance to get to campus. Miami-area 3B Joe Dunand has had a huge spring but has just okay tools, so it'll come down to if he'll sign in the 3rd-5th rounds.

Atlanta-area OF Raphael Ramirez fits in the same range but apparently wants about $1 million, so teams have already stopped scouting him--he could be an impact guy next year. Also, look out for SS/RHP Evan Mendoza from powerhouse Sarasota HS--he could be a two-way factor as a freshman and isn't a pro type either way yet, but is among the youngest players in the class and could grow into a top few round guy in three years."

Dunand is A-Rod's nephew.

I don't think anyone expects us to be any better next season, but I don't see us being much worse either. Its not like having Rodon & Turner helped us much this season.

Having guys with their type of talent helped a lot when the rest of the roster was pretty well filled out - not so much when the bullpen is thin, the 2nd & 3rd starters are virtually non-existent and the lineup can't hit outside of 3-4 guys. I'm not saying it will, but the overall strength and quality of our rotation and lineup could improve even though we won't have the headliner type guys like Rodon and Turner. We were just that bad everywhere else this year in the areas where those guys weren't involved.

we're prolly not gonna make the ACC Tournament this year WITH Rodon and Turner. Can we really be much worse without them? There are always gonna be dudes coming in to play. Duke doesn't have Rodon/Turner and they're doing fine. Wake Forest doesn't have Rodon and Turner and they've had a better season than us. A team, especially in baseball, is much more than two players. Knizner has prolly been our best player this season. Palmeiro is coming on strong. We'll see how it turns out.

RPI

NCSU - 56
Duke - 83
Wake - 88

Also not sure how you rule us out of the ACCT?

How does a college baseball RPI correlate with a college basketball RPI? Using the eye test and with an RPI in the high 50s, it seems like we still need to do more work to be considered for an at-large spot. Or, do we really need to win the ACC tourney?

Usually your RPI needs to be Top 45ish for an at large in baseball. We have to make the pool play of the ACC Tourney to have a shot at the NCAA. If we lose the play in game or miss the ACC Tourney, we are not going to the NCAA Tourney.

So I assume Rodon will throw 194 pitches on short rest Tuesday, Carolina will beat us 1-0 in 15 innings, and David Price and Keith Law will chastise Avent and Rodon for his pitch count?

That the game plan?

Yeah, throw everything but the kitchen sink at UNC, but save Rodon for FSU or UVA. I'm guessing we'd probably need a win against one of them to get in the NCAAs anyway.

If we were already in the round robin stage then I would agree with you about saving Rodon for the tougher team. But with our season ending if we lose this game, you can't not pitch Rodon. There's a reason he only pitched 5 innings against VT.

^Pretty sure it's on ESPN3. Heard WRAL will have it also.

Hearing we'll go with Eric Peterson on the mound, but who knows. Considering this could be the last time we ever see Rodon, you know he'll be begging Avent to play. He wasn't great in his last start against VT; not sure he wants that to be his final game.

With how disappointing this season has been I kind of want it over, but I really would like to see Rodon get a chance to pitch again - plus losing to UNC to end our season for the 2nd straight year would be .

Is there anyway to watch this online in the Raleigh area or is everything blacked out with it being on FS Carolinas?
