AFP | Published — Tuesday 15 August 2017
CHICAGO: A Texas university canceled Monday a planned white supremacist rally on its campus next month, citing safety concerns following the deadly violence at a rally in Virginia at the weekend.
Texas A&M University, one of the most prestigious public colleges in the United States, scrapped a September 11 rally at which known white supremacist leader Richard Spencer was scheduled to speak.
Spencer was one of the leading figures in a rally that saw hundreds of white supremacists gather Saturday in the town of Charlottesville, triggering violence that left one person dead and 19 others injured.
The university’s decision to cancel the event came after it emerged that organizers were billing the event as “Today Charlottesville, Tomorrow Texas A&M.”
“Linking the tragedy of Charlottesville with the Texas A&M event creates a major security risk on our campus,” the university said in a statement.
Spencer has asked sympathizers to invite him to speak on campuses, and he has been invited to speak at the University of Florida on September 12, although authorities have yet to give their approval.
In an open letter to students, University of Florida president Kent Fuchs indicated how the college was torn over whether to give the event the green light.
“For many in our community, including myself, this speaker’s presence would be deeply disturbing,” Fuchs wrote, before adding that “we must follow the law, upholding the First Amendment not to discriminate based on content and provide access to a public space.”" |

Im so sick of the superficial outrage. Where was all of this outrage after the previous 762bajillion white supremacist murders in this country? a white woman had to be killed to spark national outrage?
these same sjws have spent their entire lives walking by statues of confederates without a problem. you would think trump built the statues himself.
most of the country could care less about racial inequality but want to do enough so that they can feel they arent racist themselves. its one thing to be a racist but its another thing to perpetuate racism indirectly. this is what the democrat party has done for years. they pander against racism verbally but never actually push policy with teeth. racial desparities continue to grow especially in areas under democrat control.
demonizing trump and verbal racists is the only thing they have left at this point.
crime bill welfare reform and gentrification have done more damage than anything trump could say. liberals have a dont ask don't tell policy towards racism while the alt right is open with it.
talk to any democrat about socialism in scandanavia and they won't dog whistle but will say something like "but those countries are all white" or " that couldnt work here with all of the diversity" which is code switched overt white supremacy. That's actually not code for white supremacy. Some may actually be racist when saying it, but uniformity in race/culture has a huge impact on ease/acceptance of laws/structures. It's one of the reasons political opinions are so divided in America, we are an incredibly diverse nation. Population size has a lot to do with it as well, consider the size of any of the Scandinavian countries.
Diversity is absolutely a good thing and it's also one of the top reasons we are as advanced as we are in America, and more importantly, as a species in general. But when someone says "those countries are all white," what they are really saying is they are all of the same background/culture. You could substitute "white" with "black" and it would still apply.
However, you could not substitute "white" with "black" and then try to apply that statement to a random African nation, for instance, because Africa is further broken down into a large number of tribes with completely different cultures/languages/backgrounds/histories/etc.
I don't know too much about Scandinavia but would suspect their background/history/etc. is all pretty uniform. Not a lot of outsiders like to immigrate into the cold, harsh reaches of the Arctic.8/16/2017 10:43:59 AM |

Also, no country in Scandinavia, or any western democracy for that matter is "socialist". They are all capitalist economies that lean heavily Keynesian with varying degrees of social services provided by the government meant to curb inequality. The main goal is still private sector growth. 8/16/2017 11:29:32 AM |

I guess i said something the wrong way or at least it camw off the wrong way. Let me explain.
they are actually upset and not fake upset. they are upset aabout optical racism and not all racism.
examples of what i call optical or overt racism:
kkk and nazis chanting n word on the frat bus trumps non pc statements
they absolutely hate these things and call them out because they are easy to condemn and dont involve any personal cost.
these people want to feel like they are not racists and that america today is not tolerating racism. seeing those things brings white guilt into their minds and they express outrage until the facade is replaced.these are the people who declared racism over on 11/9/08.
these same people chose to ignore systemic racism that does a lot more damage to many more people because
a. willful ignorance b. they actually dont know there is more racism (white privilege) c. they like it
anything that actually costs political or personal capital is ignored.
if there is someone out there who genuinely decides to wake up one day and speak out against racism they can protest
-police - justice system -banks -workplace -corporations -housing
basically everywhere. 8/16/2017 12:56:40 PM |

Who exactly are you talking about? You're spouting off these dumb sweeping generalizations about how a good half of the country is feeling and making it up as you're going along.
People are legitimately pissed and horrified that Nazis and KKK members are assembling and inciting violence and that the POTUS is essentially giving them carte blanche to do so. This type of shit isn't normal by any means. Not to excuse or trivialize the egregious impact previous KKK rallies had on the populace, but in the past they were a direct reflection of the ignorant attitudes at the time, and they were designed to squelch the movement to grant equal rights to POC. Today, they are perhaps even more insidious because we're a much more diverse and multicultural society than before, and we should have already learned from all our mistakes by now.
People are upset because all of the warning signs we had about Trump being an incompetent lunatic were true. We are fucked proper and you and your braindead ilk are a huge reason why. 8/16/2017 1:10:18 PM |

If you are unable to understand the connection between the two, and the fact that socialism, by its very nature, requires increasing levels of totalitarian control, then I question your comprehension of what socialism really is. You are hopelessly naive if you fail to understand that the centralization of power always leads to suppression, oppression, and tyranny.
you trust this centralization when its from the left, but call it fascism when its from the right...but it leads to the same damn place. every. single. time.

While you may be correct with a lot of so-called centrists who only come out when these "whoa" moments hit (think Charleston) and then go back to supporting policies that onl make it worse, on here that simply isn't true.
The vast majority of us on here have been fully supportive of BLM protests, been outspoken about LEO aggressiveness and have been quite consistent the problems of inequality (I, personally, have evolved my views quite a bit on things like Occupy, of which I was wrong about in the past despite or maybe because of my career -- but you learn and grow)

He just sounds like Jersey white trash to me. He definitely doesn't sound like he's from the south, so hey, score one for our team?
I just want to push back a bit on the premise of this thread a bit. I've been looking around for more information and the rates of growth around hate groups given that the general consensus from the educated liberal echo chamber in which I exist is that Nazism is not only on the rise, but exploding in popularity. This doesn't pass the smell test for me, but maybe that's just my own bias or unwillingness to deal with reality.
Here's a CNN report with data from the Southern Poverty Law Center: http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/14/politics/charts-explain-us-hate-groups/index.html
General takeways: - Anti-Jewish sentiment has been steadily on the decline - Anti-Muslim sentiment has spiked - There has been an uptick in black separatist and neo-confederate groups - White supremacists, neo-nazis, and skinheads have been declining
This seems to paint a picture of white hate groups as a dying breed.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see more recent data showing a spike in hate groups. A broad working theory I have for this is that tiny sections of the far right and far left and gearing up for war in response to what they perceive as aggression from the other side. We've all seen images of far-left black bloc protestors/rioters with weapons, vandalizing property, beating people, etc. The white supremacists saw the same images, and now they believe there's a war to fight because the communists are coming to take over.
In reality, the communists are just LARPers and college students, not working class revolutionaries. The skinhead guys actually *are* working class men with guns and a willingness to use violence if they see a threat, which should make them scarier. 8/18/2017 10:14:00 AM |

I didn't know about that.
The interesting thing about the far left and far right is that they really don't have many similarities with their more moderate ideological partners. To elaborate: the moderate right in the U.S. generally prioritizes economic liberty, the individual over the collective, and business. If you talk to these white supremacists, they're talking about economic nationalism, group thinking, the white race, and how Jews run big business and are attempting to exterminate the whites. These are drastically different positions from what your average beltway Republican believes.
Similarly, you go far enough left, and suddenly you have folks that not only don't believe in gun control, but actively want guns. 8/18/2017 10:33:39 AM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
that's partially because the far left and the far right aren't actually extremely left/right of the general population; they just happen to be on an entirely different level of authoritarianism than everyone else.
