you don't attempt the field goal because their kicker has been awful all year, and especially awful tonight

that's the one stadium in the leage in which 50+ yard field goals are nearly impossible with a competent kicker, let alone a really bad one

of course you run with Bell on 4th and 1. Irvin made the point postgame that it was a throw designed for a right handed QB like Rothlisberger, and not a lefty like Vick. Vick had to throw across his body which messed the timing up.

Also Vick is one of the least accurate quarterbacks in league history (56% I think). You don't put the game in his hands. That's a crapshoot.

I'd much rather take the risk of the kicker missing the fg than Vick attempting a fourth down pass. If they fail, the result is the same. If you make the kick, you win. If you make that pass, you only get a first down. I'd rather have a career 80% kicker attempt a makeable FG, even if he has pushed two wide, than let a bad passer pass the ball.

tannehill is a solid passing QB (not deep ball though), but the dude hasn't had a solid o-line since he's gone pro. i feel bad for the guy since he gets pressured on almost every other snap.

can't wait to see someone get fired after the game. there's some serious dissension in the dolphins program right now. the defense looked clueless in the entire 1st half.

The Dolphins suck

Only 7 rushing attempts for Miller...it's the NFL you can't throw on every down.

Stupid, the coach should be fired soon.

they have the talent, so it's not like they can't put it together.

Their O coordinator sucks too...fire them all.

There literally isn't a single statistic to point to or cohesive argument you could make that supports this. Cool story though.

^^They've played teams whose combined record is 3-12.

4-0 is 4-0, but it's not like it's been against playoff bound teams.

Panthers opponents: 3-12
Packers opponents: 4-11
Falcons opponents: 6-9
BENGALS opponents: 6-10
Broncos opponents: 4-11

for reference

obviously all of the 4-0 teams' opponents combined record is going to have at least 4 losses

Look, the Panthers haven't beaten any good teams. If you want to read into them beating the Saints, Bucs, Jaguars, and Texans go for it, but the Bengals, Broncos, and especially Packers have looked better. The Falcons don't look that impressive either imo.

Bengals and Packers sure, no one will argue that. I think the Broncos are the luckiest team in the league though. 4 close wins against bad teams, and Peyton's arm looks done. They won't win a playoff game this year.

The Lions, Chiefs, Vikings, and Ravens are all better teams than what the Panthers have faced.

My only point is that of the 4-0 teams, I'd say the Panthers have faced the easiest schedule so far. Calling them "the worst 4-0 team ever" is a but much, but the point stands that they're not a very convincing 4-0 team. Yet.

Panthers might not have played any good or great teams, but none of the teams that you listed are good or great either. Last year is meaningless. Last year the NFC South was the worst division in the league. This year records indicate it's the best. Or at least right up there.

I mean, let's say the Saints beat the Cowboys tonight. All of a sudden, the Saints don't seem like the dumpsterfire that they did coming into tonight's game, and the Cowboys don't seem nearly as good.

you're right. none of those eight teams are very good. i doubt any of them will make the playoffs. as far as the Panthers making the playoffs, I'd say their chances are much better than any of them though. so there's that.

Ehh, I'd say the AFC East and NFC West are both better than the NFC South. Both the Saints and the Bucs are bottom 5 in the league bad. The other two only have 1 bad team each, and the Dolphins are probably only bad because they have a HORRIBLE coach.

Panthers are going to make the playoffs, it's almost a lock at this point, but if you don't think the schedule is a big reason why they look so good right now then you're just being a blind homer.

Look at my beloved Chiefs, they look like they're awful, but they've also played 3/4 on the road and their opponents have been the Bengals, Broncos, Packers, and Texans. Even though we're only 4 games in it's safe to say that they've faced a brutal schedule so far. They probably ought to be 2-2, but because they're 1-3 everyone is shitting on them. They haven't played well, and they deserve a lot of the criticism they're getting, but they aren't actually as bad as most of the 1-3 teams and are clearly better than some of the 2-2 teams.

You could certainly argue that the NFC West is better top to bottom. But the 49ers suck. And Seattle is 1-2 so far. The NFC South might be top heavy, but it still has two 4-0 teams and you can't just ignore that, even though we're only a quarter of the way through the season.

The Panthers should make the playoffs, given how soft the rest of their schedule is. A cursory glance at their schedule would suggest losses against Green Bay, @Seattle, and @Dallas, while they'll probably split with Atlanta. Still, I don't think they could beat Green Bay, Arizona or Seattle in a playoff game, even at home.

it is possible to be both happy that your team is 4-0 and realistic about how they've looked in those 4 games

outside of Cam upping his level of play (especially against the Saints), we've looked pretty meh

which is totally fine

No doubt the Panthers schedule has helped them, but I like the way they've been playing football. Offensive line play and WRs were supposed to cripple this team, but it hasn't. We're running the ball pretty well, although still relying on Cam to move the chains with his legs a bit too much. Probably the biggest worry right now is giving up a ton of yards to bad QBs, but having Norman to clean things up on the backend is a luxury most teams don't have. With Kuechly back in the lineup blowing up running backs and short passes, it's going to be tough sledding for pretty much any offense.
