^sex is biological- penis/vagina. gender is a social construct. in other cultures there are genders that exist outside of the masculine/feminine binary.

i read an interesting book in college called "Transparent" that talked about the lives of transitioning people. pretty eye opening. made me realize that while i'll probably never understand it completely, i should at least try and be compassionate instead of writing a whole group of people off as mentally ill.

^^i honestly don't know a ton. i had a FTM student in my class a few semesters back that wrote a paper on it and I read that book in college. that's about it. i do know that the term transgender refers to a huge spectrum of people that feel uncomfortable with the gender that was assigned to them. some people cross dress, some take hormones, some have their sex organs removed/changed. some of them reorient their sexuality after transitioning, some of them don't (like Jenner).

No, but you will reduce them to a large degree. Unlike Jenner, most transpeople don't have a ton of money or connections. They lose family support, their jobs, and most/all of their friends when they come out. Consequently they end up homeless on the streets with no one to turn to. They get attacked on the street when they're minding their own business. Some of them resort to prostitution just to get by. It's no wonder so many attempt suicide.

Many of things you say about transpeople can and have been said about gay people. High suicide rates, homelessness, and drug use remain big problems. But the solution isn't for a transperson to live life as their biological sex anymore than it is for a gay man to marry a woman. They need space to be themselves without worrying about losing their jobs and families or being attacked on the street.

On the subject of gender, I don't see why everyone gets bent out of shape about whether or not he's a woman. You don't have to fuck a woman if you find out she is a biological male. Some people prefer we get away from a gender binary in the first place (GoldenViper posted about this a fair bit). Maybe think of transpeople as a third gender. I know a transman and I don't really think of him as a man. I think of him as a man*.

They are dealing with what they were given by nature. They were given hormones balances that align with another gender. Or an environment that caused them to feel like they belong to another gender. Or both.

Some trans folks feel an operation is the only thing that will make a burning feeling of "something is horribly wrong with this body I'm in" go away.

Some trans folks don't desperately feel an operation is imminently necessary for them to present as the gender they feel and feel okay. (^that)

Many trans folks would fucking love if they could receive less attention and just undergo hormone replacement therapy, electrolysis, and other procedures in peace.

I really don't see why antagonizing them and balking at the mere thought of their existence, lifestyle, and preferences is necessary when they literally don't affect your life at all except maybe occasionally creeping into your facebook trending news bar. We have the medical means to help them, and it doesn't hurt anyone.
