it doesn't feel quite real to me yet. there have been several rumors before that he was dead. but i guess it must be true because no way would obama wanna fuck this one up. "oops. wrong guy!"
of course, the real downer is that this probably won't change actual policy. we'll still be stuck fighting over there. 5/2/2011 12:54:27 AM |

Foreign leader assassinated without trial during military raid without permission of foreign country in which it occurred. No attempt was made to arrest, only kill, as was ordered directly from the top. Everyone encountered was slaughtered, including women.
Murderer.

I can only offer my honest interpretation of the situation. I would imagine that a sizable portion of the world's citizens agree with me. Our nation can't kill or silence all of them. We will have to answer for this crime one day. 5/2/2011 11:46:00 AM |

I think it's very possible that Bin Laden was taken alive, and the "killed in a firefight" story is a front to avoid an embarrassing spectacle like the Hussein trial or Guantanamo. With all the planning that went into this raid, they could've taken him alive and staged a coverup quite easily. He would be a gold mine of intelligence. Do we have any proof that he was killed and not taken alive?
Bin Laden could be in one of our Eastern European black sites right now, getting waterboarded. We'll never know, because if that's the case, they'll just dump his ashes at sea when they are done with him. 5/2/2011 11:53:56 AM |

As one of Pres. Obama's harshest critics here, and still looking forward to his political departure in 2013...I am glad to give him props for getting Bin Laden.
Props to the Prez for not just bombing the compound, but for sending in a crew of our best men to confirm the kill.
Props for dumping the body at sea and not creating a terrorist shrine.
Props for acknowledging Bush and all the other people who made this happen.
Hopefully our enemies will take notice that while we may bicker amongst ourselves, you do not want us all paying attention to you. 5/2/2011 11:54:34 AM |

I honestly wish we kept the killing of Osama Bin Laden under wraps. Now he will be a martyr in the Muslim world and the rallying cry for many radicals. We would have been much better assaisinating him covertly or throwing him into some CIA dungeon. 5/2/2011 12:56:32 PM |

Even a troll like smc can't rain on this parade
I do believe Osama has been handled, however I am not positive he is dead. Its very possible he is alive in our captivity. He is not someone we want the world to know we have and are interrogating. He is someone we would want the world to know is no longer a threat. The burial at sea was so quick, it does open up the mind to the possibility we are having our way with him before he is dispatched to his maker.
At any event, there are too many people that would be able to discount his demise if it were not true. I dont think the U.S. would make that mistake.

Honestly, given all that's happened over the last decade, all the terrorists have already been generated. Osama bin Laden's death isn't going to convince anyone who isn't already down the terrorist path.5/2/2011 1:34:58 PM |

RedGuard is the voice of reason on foreign affairs, as usual.
CIA intelligence has consistently traced the planning, training and funding of terrorist attacks back to Al-Qaeda along the lawless Afghan-Pakistan border. Western Pakistan is under varying degrees of Taliban control, and there are several nuclear weapons in this region. Due to Obama's steadfast focus on this region, multiple attacks have been thwarted and they have not had a successful attack since the London transit bombings. Countless Al-Qaeda operatives have been killed, and the rest are too busy scrambling to avoid drones to stage new attacks. Obama's first responsibility is national security, and his vigilance in focusing our military efforts on this region have undoubtedly prevented American civilian deaths.
Whether it has been worth the tremendous cost and death toll is an open question. But the alternative, to do nothing and hope that they don't attack us again, would be unacceptable and a dereliction of his duties as commander-in-chief.

Not when holding a person accountable for their actions results in far, far greater tragedy than that person's original action, or any sum of actions that person is even capable of.5/2/2011 2:05:47 PM |
