Getting an APR ECU reflash today for GTI
1/24/2020 9:20:02 AM
Monster tach... But that rear wiper (I have a thing for rear wipers)

APR stage one for GTI put down 267 whp, 323 lb-ft at a dyno day recently. Car is otherwise 100% stock. With all this isolated COVID time, have been detailing the Cayman. Claybar'ed it a few days ago. Then went over paint with a swirl/light scratch remover. Today was spent with a Dr. Colorchip kit taking care of minor chips/paint imperfections. In a few days will recover paint with a few fresh coats of polish. Both cars to get oil changes in short term.

Filled up my tank for like $25
3/28/2020 3:16:59 PM
dipping my wheels today. the wrap place is closed so I can't get the PPF any time soon. it looks easy enough on youtube, but oh so time consuming. has anyone done it themselves?
3/29/2020 11:05:57 AM
I dipped my old ATV wheels and it was pretty easy. I would have been more precise if they were car/truck wheels but even doing them quickly I think they turned out fine. I think I did 7-8 light coats and it held up very well.

^^^^haha, thanks!

Oil/filter in the Insight. 265k miles.Waiting for the air and cabin air filters to arrive from amazon...damn COVID shipping delays.
4/4/2020 10:17:13 PM
anyone ever used an oil extractor? wondering how it would work with a dry sump setup. conventional method is 7 god damn drain plugs!
4/5/2020 2:12:57 AM
^^Odd, all my shipments have been way faster than normal. Go figure.^looks really good!
4/6/2020 12:44:40 PM
^thanks, it didn't come out great at a distance of 2-5ft, but looks great at 10ft or so. I more or less wanted to just test it and find something to do while stuck at home. I'll probably send them out to get powder coated that color
4/6/2020 2:50:43 PM
installed my old Pioneer head unit into my 97 Tacoma...it was originally in my 89 Mustang. Bought it new from Circuit City in 2006
4/19/2020 1:18:08 AM
^haha, well done!clay barred my GTI on Sunday, then applied TopCoat F11 all over the whole car. First time using this product - loved how easy it goes on. Feels super smooth. Now to see how long this finish lasts.

Sold my 2016 328i xDrive (with Dinan Stage 1 tune+exhaust) for $500 less than I bought it for as a CPO OTD last May.[Edited on April 30, 2020 at 11:46 PM. Reason : My price without taxes title etc was $23.5k a year ago and I sold it for $24.5k today.]

Couple questions. Planning on driving the girlfriend's car for a while Should I carry liability insurance or just rely on hers (maybe add me as a driver)If I just cancel my policy will NC DMV and fine me or something? Can't return the plate yet.

My stable has gotten a little out of control. 1966 pickup: currently in the resto shop, getting a lot of about 20 things finished up FR-S: did all tires and pads/rotors a month or two ago. Had a track alignment done. New brake fluid. Now I need to duct the front brakes, and it’s throwing a code for TC/stability. I think likely a wheel speed sensor.Insight: did an oil change/routine service a few weeks agoBMW motorcycle: adjusted valves. Had carbs adjusted. Fixed a leaky fuel line.R6: new front tire. New front/rear brake pads and brake fluid. Replaced a bunch of stupid looking spiky fairing bolts the previous owner installed. Oil/filter change. Had the suspension set for my weight.Boat (Grady White 180): removed chartplotter/sonar unit. The nav function is dead...looking for a replacement...Airplane (RV-4, half share):currently in the shop, getting a ton of stuff done. Hasn’t flown in 5+ years. Bought as a project from the estate of an old man in a nursing home, so we don’t have a great pass down about the history, and are going through it with a fine-toothed comb.[Edited on May 7, 2020 at 11:32 PM. Reason : I need to get rich and hire a team of personal mechanics]
5/7/2020 11:31:41 PM
Does the FRS really need front brake ducts? I feel like until you have a significant power upgrade that's unnecessary - unless those NT01s are really beating the system up, haha.
5/8/2020 7:12:35 PM
Well, I ended up with total, pedal-on-the-floor fade at Barber twice, despite race pads and brand-new Motul fluid.
5/8/2020 8:59:00 PM
So, the cruise control on the FR-S wasn't working, either, so I'm pretty sure it was a wheel speed sensor. I pulled the ECU codes and did an internet search--the code that came up said something about an overly rich condition (which didn't surprise me due to the tune). At any rate, I reset the fault code, and all of the warning lights for TC/ABS/stability went out, and cruise control started working fine.I went out and drove it for 30-40 minutes...used cruise control, cycled through the stability settings, engaged ABS, TC, and stability...no issues. Weird...I've never seen a car throw a code for that kind of stuff, and then work fine just by resetting the code.
5/9/2020 3:57:47 PM
^^did you measure brake hardware temps after coming off track?
5/12/2020 9:50:30 AM
No.Also, the weird thing is that in both cases, it happened after backing off and/or pitting in to let the tires cool off. Same corner, actually...just a few few corners after going back to full blast.
5/13/2020 1:35:32 AM
Very odd.Def buy a temp gun. Like $14 on Amazon, including the 9V battery haha.
5/13/2020 9:10:38 AM
FR-S keeps throwing that code for an overly rich condition. Oddly, the cruise control/TC/ABS/stability are all inop when that code is active.I pulled the O2 sensors out today, cleaned them with brake cleaner, and blew them out with compressed air. So far, no codes. Hopefully it stays that way, and hopefully the local shop will do a free custom dyno tune on it next week. They moved their dyno and need to recalibrate it with a low-power car.
5/15/2020 8:44:50 PM
that would be great. If you can dyno lemme know what it puts down.

finally upgraded my wife to a 2019 TLX and my work commute time tripled, so now I'm DDing the 2006 TL with 317k miles and the truck is out to pasture

Jump-started my wife's car as the battery ran out during the period she was WFH.

Anybody interested in a 1969 Porsche 912 shell or a 911 2.2 6-cylinder? Shoot me a message if so. Family member moved to LA and doesn't have space for all his junk. Located in Raleigh.

Washed and vacuumed the Insight. Cleaned the all-weather floor mats. Shampooed all the seats. Cleaned/wiped the dash/console/door panels. I wonder how many $2000 cars out there enjoy such treatment, along with impeccable maintenance? I can't stop eyeballing other cars, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of this thing. It has been such a perfect DD, and delivers vastly more value to me than I could get by selling it. I expect I'll drive it until it dies, or until my daughter turns 16 in a little over 2 years. I'm guessing it'll have 330k-340k by that point.Changed the MAF sensor in the FR-S. Cleaning the O2 sensor didn't resolve the rich condition, so I replaced the upstream O2 sensor. That didn't help, either. I guess I could have cleaned the MAF, but it was only $55, so I just replaced it. Also cleaned and re-oiled the filter element. Took it for a 20 minute drive--it was down on power and really flat in the midrange at first, but after a few minutes, it did fine. Seems to have resolved the issue.
