^ Look into a small revolver for her. She doesn't need to worry about jams and other complications with a semi-auto. I'd suggest looking at the Ruger LCR. It's lightweight and reasonably priced.

^ Not sure how much you're trying to spend, but you can probably pick up a brand new LCP at the gun show this weekend for approx $275. Hard to beat that for a brand new gun.

I'd put her behind a 1911 before a little pea shooter like that. It's much harder to develop good technique when you haven't got enough gun to form a proper grip.

well rest assured she's learning the basics on all my guns (what I feel confident enough to teach her correctly, anyway, as I'm still a relative novice myself), including my rifles, 12ga, .45acp, .357sig, and .44 (on the way). Mostly because I want her to be comfortable enough with ALL firearms in our house such that if she ever had to use any one of them in an emergency, it would require as little thought or additional fear as possible.

The impetus for the LCP is because it's something that she'll identify with as "her own" (yes, it'll be mine and in my name until she can carry) and be much more apt to pick up and use correctly if something ever happens when I'm out of town. I'd rather her be confident and sure with something that she can grip and shoot well rather than risk using one of my bigger pistols and miss/get it taken away from her and used against her before she can get a round off.

It's a great sign that she immediately fell in love with my G32 when I brought it home yesterday, hopefully that holds up after her first day at the range with it.

^^ I prefer autos. A decent auto that's kept remotely clean doesn't have jamming issues. If it does, it needs a little break in--you need to shoot more...Either that, or it doesn't like a certain brand of ammo--you need to shoot more with different brands until you find something it likes. Oh, and if you aren't proficient enough to easily clear a jam when it happens once in every few thousand shots, maybe, you aren't proficient enough to be carrying a gun to begin with, and you should shoot more.

I do agree that little pocket pistols aren't good for learning to shoot. They aren't even good for shooting if you know what you're doing, and beyond that, they're just kind of unpleasant to shoot due to their feathery weight and tiny grip surface, even in a mild caliber like .380. I have a Kel-Tec P3AT, and am accurate enough with it to be totally confident with it as a defensive weapon, but it sucks in every way aside from being able to stash it in your pocket. If you can't conceal anything else, the P3AT/LCP/TCP are the best option by default. Otherwise, they all suck, haha.

just keep in mind the eventual owner and that her lifestyle, clothing, body size, preferences, and hobbies are likely decidedly different from ours.

besides an LCP or similar ain't exactly breaking the bank for a little trinket to dick around with that may occasionally be appropriate for carry

ruger says not to. i don't know that i've ever even seen any.

90 gr federal hydra-shoks aren't far behind standard pressure .38 special in energy and is pretty much the standard for .380 ACP personal defense ammo. my LCP feeds them well.

My thoughts as well.
I've fired one. The trigger pull is long and feels especially awkward due to the tiny grip area. Its value is in its size. That is what makes it so easy to carry.

No, especially not after holding a bunch of them at the gun show. I know they're solid enough little pistols but they aren't really designed for longevity and not one person I've talked to said they're any fun to shoot. I know that isn't really a concern in a purely concealed defense pistol but if it's no fun to shoot then she's not gonna want to shoot it and it'll be dead weight in her hands. Besides, I know her hands are much smaller than mine but I could barely get any purchase on the thing and I'm not gonna buy a pistol that I can't grip.

Might be interested in the bodyguard, though I've never really looked into them. Doing so presently. What do you want for the package?

I will say though that at this point I'm more interested in picking up a full-frame .45 and a shotgun (I think my Ithaca is totalled ) as well as reloading equipment. She likely isn't going to take her CC class for a while and in the meantime I want her to learn to shoot on my big boy pistols.

model 51, the bolt/carrier (not sure what it's called on a shotgun) is jammed up and the tab that you use to rack it back is broken or sheared off. Took it to a gunsmith and he said it wasn't worth it to fix. I'm still open to second opinions, though, because I'd like to have it working for sentimental value

if it has sentimental value, then you'll just have to pony up and have the gunsmith fix it. if it's locked up, you'll most likely do more damage if you tried to fix it yourself. it can probably be fixed, but it'll cost almost as much or more than a similar replacement would cost.

it's got some sentimental value, but it's not the end of the world if it's just junked. I'd probably pay more than I should to have it running again but it's definitely not "priceless"

I must be the only person who enjoys shooting my LCP or P3AT. Yeah, it's not as comfortable as a bigger gun, but it is easier and more comfortable than my J frame with +Ps.
I'd shoot it more if ammo wasn't so expensive.

barrel only for .357sig to .40, as the mags are the same.
barrel and mag for 9mm to .40, but only for range use. You would need a 9mm ejector and extractor for a full conversion. There is a slight chance of slam fire due to different ejector shapes.

^^ how does that happen in a glock? i thought the firing pin spring would keep that from happening? also having trouble conceptualizing how different ejector shapes would effect a slamfire, or anything other than a jam or FTE

^ Larger ejector possibly tapping the rear of the 9mm cartridge when chambered? It might not directly hit the primer, but a hard enough hit next to the primer might set it off would be my guess.
