i think its an interesting hire because he's known for blitzing and we run the most passive piece of shit defense ever but he's still a great coach so whatever. the guy doesn't care for recruiting but I don't think that'll be a big deal if he's only here a year or two

The Irish scoring defense also improved in ‘08, allowing 6.6 points less per game than in ‘07, the 22nd-best improvement in the nation. Tenuta helped guide a defense that ranked in the top 50 nationally in total defense, scoring defense, pass defense and rush defense — the first time that had happened at Notre Dame since 2002. Prior to his stint at Notre Dame, Tenuta spent six seasons as the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, where 18 Yellow Jacket defenders earned first- or second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference recognition, and 18 players from his first four units were either drafted or signed NFL free-agent contracts. In his last five seasons at Georgia Tech, Tenuta’s defense ranked in the top 30 nationally in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense, including 20th or better against the run all five years. Tar Heel defensive end Julius Peppers and defensive tackle Ryan Sims were two of the top three defensive players selected in the 2002 NFL draft. He helped develop several Ohio State defensive backs into NFL players, including first-round draft picks Shawn Springs, Antoine Winfield, Ahmed Plummer and Nate Clements. Holy hell is this can't be possible. Getting Tenuta is amazing and would go a long way in pulling in some of the top defensive talent in the state. Hopefully Stephone Anthony, the top linebacker in the state and quite possibly the top player overall in state for the 2011 class will want to play for him.

It's funny, I informed my husband of this hire yesterday and he got excited for two reasons:

1. It's Tenuta so our defense should be fucking awesome soon
2. He thought that meant Archer was fired and that Tenuta was the new DC.

I have a feeling this may be Archer's last season. No way Tenuta takes a step down (or not go to BC) without knowing he'll make a quick step up.

the interview on N&O said he's moving his fam here. I know that's standard and all, but you'd think he'd be around as long as he wants to probably, TOB is not known to have alot of staff turnover. Is Tenuta a 4-3 guy or a 3-4 guy? Archer supposedly loves him some 3-4.

I think Tenuta is a 4-3 guy, but with those two 350 pounders coming in this fall and our abundance at LB we could be switching over soon. As long as one of those guys is good at playing the nose and eating blocks. Didn't TOB mention switching at some point?

A 3-4 ran correctly could reak havoc in the college game because of the blocking confusion it causes.

As for Tenuta, I am excited to see how he can use Irving assuming Nate is healthy. Nate could be a monster at the blitz ala Eric Norwood at South Carolina the past three years.

yea, well played on the 34 (that about sums it up).

I know ND is ND and all, but I imagine Tenuta was pretty intstrumental in getting Te'o and these great LB's to come to ND. He's definitely a known commodity to recruits, much like TOB and Horton are for producing OL'men. So i'm hoping our defensive recruiting really picks up. Getting Stephone Anthony would be great, almost as great as getting Manning and Maddox in the same year.

lol TAH-NOO-TAH sucks. at least he only gets the LB's and can't fuck everything up. i'll always hold a special place in my heart for him thou...his terrible scheme and inability to adjust helped Navy's offense romp all over ND in South Bend this year for a victory

and he had the 89th ranked defense at Notre Dame this year. hell, state was way better than that, and they didn't have the #8 ranked offense in the country helping keep opposing offenses off the field like TAH-NOO-TAH had

state had 2 DivII on its schedule skewing those stats a crazy amount

ND had none


during ACC play i think state gave up close to 40 ppg and a ridiculous amount of yards per game

actual ACC stats:

8 ACC games, 315 points allowed, 39.3 ppg and the best performance was holding UNC to 27.

ranked 99 in scoring defense and 106 in pass efficiency defense
