Also, if Cradle was going to almost double their capacity, they needed to double the output of their air conditioning or something. It's always way too hot in there post-renovation. Some girl passed out last night. 4/13/2012 11:32:47 AM |

Pretty sure they didn't "almost double" their capacity, but I'll agree the air in there sucks. However, and again, it's no different from any other venue like it. I remember the Black Cat in DC being equally as stuffy in a sold out environment.

At least its not as bad as the Soapbox in Wilmington. Saw a show there last year and everyone in the place was drenched in sweat (not exaggerating). The band actually had to stop playing because one of their guitars was fucking up from all the sweat. 4/13/2012 2:03:00 PM |

Was anybody else at the Sleater-Kinney show in DC where it was like a million degrees and they had to cancel the show because the transformer on the side of the building caught on fire? That was a hot show. But CC can get pretty hot too. They need one o' them Orange Peel fans.
The only show I've ever been to at Soapbox was sold out, and I was cool as a cucumber there.

Well, whatever. The Cradle pretty much wins in my book. They have awesome bands most of the time, they help other venues book awesome bands (including Kings, btw), and they regularly give away free tickets to shows via KNC. It's a win win situation, regardless of petty bullcrap like being "too stuffy" or "I don't like the new layout" or some other, again, petty crap. 4/15/2012 3:24:45 AM |

regularly having crowds that want to do nothing but mill around and talk loudly, more so than any other venue in the triangle, is not "petty". i pay to go to the god damn show, not hear some obnoxious college kid talk for the duration.
it's not just the Cradle, though, the same crowds are at the 506 quite a bit. it's not only the venues, it's commonplace in that town, apparently.
as far as the Cradle being great for the triangle... LOLOLOLOL. you obviously haven't heard much regarding their business practices and the ways they've dicked over other venues over the years. they've done as much to hurt the music scene in the area as they have help it, but that has no influence on my opinion about their terrible crowds. 4/15/2012 3:54:34 PM |

that's not bad... what's bad are the venues, that over the decades they've been open, that they've bullied, ran out of business, and purposefully taken losses on shows to book competing shows at burgeoning venues in order to ensure they never posed a threat to the Cradle in the Triangle.
their owner is a first rate asshole and he's done this shit for ages. but hey, it's business, and all is fair... it, however, doesn't make him less of a scumbag, and it truly has hampered the scene in many ways. competition is always a good thing.

I never claimed to have insider knowledge into any of this booking/venue drama, but I'd like to know if you have specific examples. Did they shit on Raleigh or something? I just don't see how them booking a good show conflicting with another good show at another venue is "bad business for the Triangle" or whatever.4/16/2012 12:42:59 AM |

i'm shocked how good this is and am so pumped to be going. i'd say they got the best headliners of any festival this year, minus metallica. jack white, beck, and andrew bird are three of my favorite contemporary artists and will all be there, plus sigur ros, the kills, big boi, explosions in the sky, the walkmen, tame impala, ugh. this was supposed to be my consolation festival when i thought i couldn't do bonnaroo for a while, and as of last wednesday i'm doing both.

Hopscotch totally fucked Troika; that's another good example. The point is that when two people that vehemently hate Chapel Hill and never miss a beat to talk shit about it and everything in it, are talking about that, I feel the need to reiterate that it's not just the Cradle. All this could be avoided by not leaving Raleigh or something, by the way. For those that feel so strongly about it... 4/17/2012 2:29:03 PM |

washed out was underwhelming. It felt like the first show of their tour, which it was. It looked like they brought some pretty powerful lights that they could have used effectively, but their light show absolutely sucked donkey balls. And it was hawt as balls in there. They didn't do live sidechaining to get the pumping sound that is all over their records. They now have their own Missy Thangs but Washed Out's 2-bit copy doesn't do as much and is annoying. Their rave style songs were excellent but their slower songs were crap. I still like them.

That entire place has one entrance/exit, the Neptunes bathroom is constantly a death pit, the people aren't friendly at all..., I constantly see that Jolly Roger looking motherfucker and the guy with the silly hat, it feels claustrophobic more than any place I've ever been,...their entire mantra is based on North State Sound (which has been picked up by many other places and isn't even based in Raleigh), they never have shows that draw a whole lot of attention...
