Kol, that hand where you asked if the guy raised preflop and then pushed was the funniest fucking thing i've seen in a while.
I wonder why he called after you did that.

Eh, I dont know either Justin. I practically told him what I didnt have. Nitro picked it up right tho...he was like, "He basiclly was asking if you had AK" (nut str8).
That sounds great Ben. Just pick a day next week...Mon is a no go tho.
And to Paul, you are very right about PKR. I was washing the deck everytime I got a chance to shuffle. Even that could'nt stop a bunch of clubs from bunching together...flush over flush will bust you everytime

Ok, all HU matches will begin 1st week of April. This should give peeps time for planning what times and days are good. It will also give me time to make sure all my shit is str8
Now for questions: What can you do when you flop bottom str8 and some one else flops the nut str8. Here is the hand:
I'm last to act. Me: Jd8s Opponent: KJo
FLOP: QT9
Is there anyway to tell if I am beat? It was bet call. All in, call. The individual seemed genuinely confident and I took that confidence as him either flopping a set or maybe 2 pair. KJo never popped in my mind. I know I should identify the nuts on every flop but this time I was thinking instead that I would get paid off since I had flopped it. Any feedback? Thanks
Another one: I'm first to act. Me: AKo Opponent: JJ
FLOP: AJ9 TURN:Blank RIVER:J
Player was fairly str8 forward so I knew he hit the flop. My initial read was an Ace since I'd seem him play any face and any Ace. AJo was bugging me too. It was bet call then on the turn I bet again and he wnet into the tank. Dont think this person was capable of acting b/c he was honest even when he didnt know he was being honest. He may have really thought I had some combination of AA. So here is the meat of the question. I put him on having a Jack and the river brought a Jack. There's around ~$120 in the pot and he goes all in for about $30 more. I know with out a shadow of a doubt that I am beat here. I should go with my read and fold yet does not pot odds dictate a call here too? Feedback? Thanks!

there is a reason you shouldnt play hands like J8 from the button(if you do though, id suggest raising) or for most positions for that matter. Other than that, there isnt much you can do other than say, damn bad luck, and remember not to put yourself in that situation again. There is a reason I play junk like 45 and stuff in late position from time to time, it is because when i flop something, it is highly likely my opponent wont have an higher straight because in only 2 instances does it not make the nut straight, and also if i flop the wheel, there is an ace on the board that hopefully hit top pair for someone. The J8 only can be the nut straight once.

^^ for the second part, I always go with my read
but then again you prolly shouldnt have left yourself to that decision on the river. In most circumstances, if he only had 30 left after your bet on the turn and the pot was around 120, your turn bet should have been him all in. A small % of the time he'll have you destroyed, a large percent of the time you'll have him dominated. Thats the way it goes 3/26/2006 5:50:19 PM |

I learned something important today. From harrington's books.
Had JJ in BB, playing with .25 BB, so someone raises 3x BB to $1 total.
I decide to go over to top, defining my hand, raise to $3 total. He calls and another does also.
I ended up winning the hand even though a King flopped. But, like Harrington said, it made all my other decisions easier. If I had called, I knew nothing about their hands. By raising and not getting reraised, I know they were not on QQ/KK/AA. He ended up playing the rest of the hand super passively with AQ.
One of his main points in his books is, your early betting should make your future decisions easier. Never really hit home until now. I was always afraid to reraise with JJ/1010 because what if I lost, you know. But you will lose less if you make them prove they have a premium hand. A counterintuitive move (to beginner and intermediate players), but makes sense when you see it first hand and study it fully. I think this is the first step in my becoming an advanced player. Been a while since I had a game breakthrough. 3/26/2006 8:49:24 PM |

I woke up early and started with the $200 multi on Dise at 9:30am... only 47 players, but I won it ($3500)... it basically left me freerolling for my tourneys today - I think that really helped my play overall.

on a side note,
is there any particular reason that there are NO decent omaha hi/lo learning materials?
I mean come on....
I find it pretty damn odd that the guy who wrote the best o8 book ive found thus far and writes for cardplayer regularly plays 5/10 or on the rare occasion 10/20..... (live even...... remember that internet games are theoretically tougher by a few levels...)
seriously, i need more than just starting hand requirements.
even 2+2 is full of riduclousness when it comes to omaha8. it seems like two of the 5 posters that seemed to know a little bit of what the hell they were doing no longer post, and only a few of the others are willing to help.
Id like to expand my game a bit, i think that i could drastically increase the ole bb/100 if i get away from nut peddling so much and really develop better strategies with promo raises and the such, but its getting to a point where ive tought myself so much, i havent seen much progression in a long time.
maybe i should write a book 3/27/2006 11:15:57 PM |

Pilgrim,
there are different lines of thought on it. I love a slow play every now and then to try and hit a monster and pull them in and bag a huge pot. but with 12 overcards, i think MY style is more to raise and define it. If a A/K/Q falls, then I have to wonder after the flop. Odds an AKQ falls, or someone limps with suited connectors and spikes something is high.
Am i missing your thinking(if so, please elaborate)? I am open to all suggestions, I don't have it figured out, just seemed to be a better approach than waiting to the 1-7.5 that you hit a set and hope someone else has soemthing to bet with also. Because most of the time, someone comes with you anyway when you raise anyway! 3/28/2006 10:25:42 AM |
