so basically just faster and better camera. I think the OS upgrade will be enough for me to wait til next year.

Hmm..So I just went to att.com and tried to upgrade, and it isn't giving me the subsidized price. It even says $499 if I want to upgrade to a regular 3G (I'm still on 1st gen) So yesterday I could have upgraded to a 16GB 3G for $299, and today it costs me $499 for an 8GB 3G. I'm just gonna go ahead and assume they haven't gotten all the kinks worked out yet. Cause that's some bullshit right there if that's true.

Apple saved me $300 today because I can't see any reason at all to upgrade from my 16GB 3G. New features would be cool, but they aren't that cool. Oh well, maybe next year.

Yeah, none of the hardware updates seemed that impressive. Even the battery life improvement was modest at best. Sticking with 3G here.

I saw someone said that MMS won't be available until later this summer, but does that mean that you can do the upgrade for the 3G and get MMS or would you have to get the new phone?

^its all software.

its just that AT&T was taken by surprise today at the announcement of MMS and tethering so they have to play catch up. /sarcasm.

God damn, the apple website is fucked right now. It keeps giving me all these stupid errors about trying to choose a day, when the only options are what phone I want, and what store I want to pick it up from.

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/att-3g-upgraders-pay-200-more-for-iphone-3g-s/

Current 3G customers pay an extra $200. Ain't that some shit. I can see why they had to do it, but I'll bet that brings the upgrade rate down enormously.

I have no intention of dropping the money to buy the new one, but I'm happy about the upgrades to the software. Copy Paste and MMS were two of the reasons that I was thinking about switching back to the blackberry.

Now maybe this'll keep me with the iphone for a little longer.

so if we 'pre-order' we don't have to wait in line forever?

^^It wouldn't be $700, it would be $500.

I mean, I still feel your pain and all. But there is a bit of a discount from the completely unsubsidized price.

The website says "* Pre-authorization does not guarantee iPhone availability at an Apple Retail Store. iPhone is sold on a first-come, first-served basis" So take that for what you want.

Quote :
"Requires new two-year AT&T wireless service contract, sold separately to qualified customers; credit check required; must be 18 or older. For non-qualified customers, including existing AT&T customers who want to upgrade from another phone or replace an iPhone 3G, the price with a new two-year agreement is $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)."

$700.

i also just checked my upgrade eligibility:

the 9/26 part has me hopeful... that's only 1 year into my contract.

yeah, that's disappointing. when the 3G came out, they gave 1st gen owners the discounted price to upgrade to 3G. i def won't be upgrading from my 3G anytime soon if that's true

i think they did that because the actual price of the original iPhone wasn't subsidized, but the 3G was.

It's on the very last page where you pick which store you want to pick up from and the model you want.

to evan: I wonder where ilounge got their info from. Cause it says $499 across the board, but maybe that's just assuming that everyone bought a 3G the day they came out. I can see them not wanting to offer the $200 discount to someone that's only a couple of months into their current contract.

unfortunately i couldn't get one the day it came out, i was still in a 2 year contract. 9/26/2008 was the day i was eligible for an upgrade, and you can bet i was at the apple store first thing in the morning, haha.

maybe the $200 discount is for people who are at least a year into their contract.

This supports the $200 discount for current 3G customers too:

Quote :
"Just got an email from Rick Fox, spokesperson for AT&T, who explained the iPhone pricing structure to me.

"iPhone 3G S is a great value. The 16 GB model is $199 and the 32 GB model will go for $299. Individual plans start as low as $69.99 per month and include unlimited data (Web access and email). Families and small businesses can add iPhone lines for $39.99 per month. Upgrade eligibility varies with each customer, but in general you will become
upgrade-eligible the further you are into your service agreement. Customers can find out at att.com or in one of our stores if they are upgrade-eligible. If you are not currently eligible for an upgrade but still want iPhone 3G S, we can offer you an early upgrade price of $399 (16 GB) and $499 (32 GB). You have a number of choices here. You can wait until you are eligible, you can pay the early-upgrade price for iPhone 3G S, or you can simply continue to use your current iPhone 3G, which is eligible for the free upgrade to the new iPhone 3.0 software.""

^i see the quoted bit that evan posted now at the very bottom of the page but its contradicted every where else on apple's website.

And when i did the pre-order process it said unable to verify your account please select an apple store to reserve one or whatever. But i think thats because i used the wrong email. I wasn't sure if it wanted what i log into att wireless or what i log into uverse with where i actually pay my wireless bill.

Yeah, it did that to me too. I really hope that's just a problem with their website being overran with too many people to be able to process orders. I was really hoping to be able to have one shipped to me, because my closest Apple store is 55 miles away and I don't really want to have to go stand in line that day.

And now that I've "completed" the online reservation thing it just sends me an email letting me know to show up at the store I picked and talk to a rep. It does mention the model I selected but makes no mention about how it's being reserved for me. It even mentions first come, first serve.

Basically they're like, thanks for being interested. Now stand in line. Fuck that. I can't believe how poorly Apple is handling this whole situation. Seems like nobody is happy right now. Not current customers, not prospective customers, no one.

We have 2 1G iPhone's on my account, about 1.5 yrs in. I am eligible for the $299 (because I'll have to pay more for the data plan and 200 txt messages), but I'm not sure how this will work on the other line. I'd assume I could upgrade the other line if I wanted before 2 yrs for $299.

Apple's website is still being retarded. For some reason I thought to try it over at att.com. Just pre-ordered a 32GB 3GS, scheduled for free overnight shipping to be delivered on June 19.

I get the feeling I'm going to need to call AT&T to get an iPhone since I have such a bizarre plan at the moment and don't want to lose my discounts.
