just ordered one direct from AT&T. log into your account, click "check upgrade status" (or whatever it says) and it should give you the 3GS as a preorder option.

This worries me. I have a feeling it will be a repeat of the 3G where the AT&T stores only got like 30 phones total...so i'm sure their warehouses won't be any better in terms of quantity.

i was going to order online from att...but i have a feeling they wont show up on the 19th..
i have nothing better to do than go to the apple store...and im guessing the lines wont be quite as bad...since they arent subsidizing for everyone, and allowing pre-orders online.

I went to an AT&T store around 7am and was probably 60th in line.... wasn't until noon that they came out and said that they only had 30 phones shipped so the rest of us were screwed. What really pissed me off is when they first opened we asked them how many iPhones they had received and they told us they did not know because I guess apple ships stuff without a shipping manifest and you have to hand count them.

tech question: i just got a new laptop and all my songs are on my old itunes. when i plug in my 3g to my new laptop, it will only transfer the songs i paid for through itunes... so where does that leave the rest of my 800 songs? am i missing something? help please and thanks

^that will only work for songs you have purchased through iTunes. the rest of the 800 songs need to be transfered from computer to computer by other means.

^^you need to copy them over manually.

easiest way is to find the files on the computer they're on and copy all those files to a flash drive. put flash drive on new computer, copy files to "my music". import them in itunes.

If you really want the new one, cant you just sell your att phone on ebay, and buy a new phone at full price from apple, and end up coming out better than if you "upgraded" eligibly?

Or I thought about this: I'm still on a 1st gen, so I could upgrade to the regular 3G 16 GB for $149. Then I could upgrade next week to the 3GS for the regular price + the $200 upgrade fee. Meaning I would get a brand new in the box 3G for $349. Then sell it on ebay and profit.

I probably (ok, definitely) won't end up doing that, but the thought did enter my mind.

So I just recently discovered the magic of jailbreaking a few weeks ago. I have a question about updating firmware. When 3.0 comes out, and I update it through iTunes, do all my jailbroken apps get deleted or just disabled until I jailbreak the phone again?

They disappear. You'll have to reinstall all of your apps after you jailbreak again with 3.0 (assuming that a method to jailbreak 3.0 is released..there isn't currently a way to do it)

Yeah, anyone with a 1st gen iPhone should be able to get a 3GS for 199/299 because the 1st gen wasn't subsidized. When I placed my order for the 3GS, it was 299 for the 32GB, and I still have ~8 months left on my original 2 yr contract.

anyone know anything about tethering with 3.0 on at&t? My only concern about switching from my windows mobile phone to an iphone is having to pay extra to tether with my netbook. I tether for free with my phone's data plan to my netbook. I think it would be stupid to have to pay extra to tether because that would be like paying two data plans.

and another thing. I have an at&t contract and i believe it's up in september. For me to get the $199 3gs i'd have to wait until then? If i renewed now i'd have to pay the full price?

just read the news on opengl es 1.1 and 2.0 - going to be interesting to see how developers play it and whether or not they choose to support both hardware configs

At this point (and for the foreseeable future), you'd have to be stupid to spend time/money working on something that would actually use the new GPU's capabilities.

They'll have to announce a pretty exciting iTouch upgrade this fall and/or a completely redesigned/newly 'drool-worthy' iPhone next year to get the majority of iDevice users on board w/this new chipset (assuming it'll be in the next touch).

W/the 3G at $99 and most current 3G users perfectly happy to hang on to theirs for a while longer, it's going to be a while before "the masses" can run the more advanced games.

edit: Then again, if you were the first to drop a super shiny game you're basically guaranteed to make a $bundle

Has anyone that's ordered a 3GS from att.com got confirmation that their order has gone through? I got an email yesterday morning that said my credit card info was invalid and I needed to contact customer support. This is my debit card with >10k in the account and the same card that not 24 hours earlier, I used to pay my at&t bill with online. I called the customer service rep and she verified my info and re-ran my card. I didn't put my middle initial in when placing the online order and she said sometimes that screwed things up (yeah right). I just got another email tonight saying that my card was declined again. I called again and this chick told me that at&t was no longer doing online shipping and that all orders would have to be done from within a store. When I asked her if I'd still be able to reserve one, she said I'd have to ask in the store. When I asked if there really was a problem with my card, she said probably not, that lots of people were having the same problem. I had some other questions for her, but the call dropped (thanks at&t, you're the best).

Anyone else had any issues with their online order getting canceled? trying to order at apple.com is still just as useless. Apple and at&t really couldn't have fucked this up any more if they had been trying.
