David Thompson, after signing his letter of intent, participated in a pickup game with players on the NC State basketball team before he had enrolled, which constituted a "tryout" according to the arcane rules of the NCAA.

That is very comparable to UNC having a coach on it's staff who was paying players and guiding them to his sports agent buddy Gary Wichard. And having a tutor write papers for multiple players

How could Butch know this was going on? It's not his fault. The football program had no control over what an assistant coach, several tutors, and multiple players were doing on the side. Let's not let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

i believe he was actually a sophomore at the time. freshman weren't allowed on the team at the time, so he was already a student at state, just not a member of the varsity team yet. and the part about the pick-up game that the NCAA had an issue with was the fact that an assistant coach (coach eddie biedenbach) was playing with them.

According to 620 the UNC BOG is contemplation all UNC system schools doing a similar internal review.
