In the future, try to avoid direct flash, and maybe try and different angle and some type of composition. The center of the picture is blown out, and you've got visible shadows in the background.

Yeah, I was nervous because it was my first wedding and the first shots were of the dress. I got more comfortable as we went along. I just brought that back up for a new treatment.

Live and learn. The flash was my on camera one, I hate it.

just got back from the canes game. Great game and I definately have some great shots. I got hit by the puck in 3rd period when I was on center ice. Right in the kidney. At least the canes won. So it's worth the pain.

Those occur naturally when you shoot at a small aperture, like f/22 or f/32, and you've got point-sources of light in an otherwise dark scene. You should try it.

CF cards are cheap, and I feel like I'd be more inclined to trust them than that $37 off-brand device with my photos. I mean, you can get a few gigs of cards on the cheap, and whoever is doing the kind of shooting that requires SEVERAL cards is gonna shell out more on that type of device anyway.

I'd go and trust something better then that for my photo's. Epson makes the p-5000 photo/video reviewer and there's a few other name brand photo banks, but like what Rob said, CF and SD cards are insanely cheap now days, it doesn't really make much sense.

I got 3 4GB sandisks for $12 shipped a month or two ago. Same deal was on last week or so. They practically give 2GB cards away for free now days.

About CF Cards...My Friend has a ton of cards, mostly smaller in size like < 1GB. I asked him why he didn't upgrade to larger cards. He says it was easier to swap out the cards for his shoots and group them that way versus one or two large cards. It also prevented him losing all his shots on a corrupt card by spreading out the photos on multiple cards. I guess I never thought of that.

-Anyways, I wanted to see what people thought on these prices? The Circuit City by me is going out of business. They have a Canon open box 40D with kit lens for $950 and a Canon 100mm f/2.8 for $300. Are those good deals, worth getting or should I worry about it being display models, opened, etc?

Depends on which kit lens it is. I've seen the 40d packaged with the 18-55, the 28-135, and the 17-85.

And I'd be more worried about a floor model than a returned item. If someone is going to spend that much money chances are they are probably going to care for it.

I know you get what you pay for, but is the first lens worth that much more? I'm interested in a lens that'll take good hand-held basketball shots underneath the basket in gyms with low lighting and no flash.

And just so I can say I contributed something, here are some very old shots I found on my PC. I'm very bad at photography, but I still want to learn and get better.

Bad deal. You can get a new 40D with 28-135 kit lens for 950 on amazon right now. It's listed on slick deals. There were plenty of 40D combo deals this past week from black friday/holiday deals. Christmas time will be a lot more sales. $300 for the 100mm macro lens is a good deal. I see them some times used for about that price.

^^Whether or not it's worth it is up to the individual, but for your scenario, it might possibly be worth the extra cash, if only for the USM. That'll get you quicker focusing for sports action shots. If you're interested in basketball shots and you're on a tight budget, check out the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM. It focuses really fast and you'll probably find that focal length more appropriate for bball.

I agree, check out the 85 1.8. Awesome lens.
If you're directly underneath the basket and want wide, maybe try the sigma 30mm 1.4.

Thanks JBaz, I would rather get a new Camera for that price if I can find it. I'll wait and see if it drops a lot more and if it is still there I may get it. I'll check out the lens.

One more questions...Is it worth upgrading from my 30D? I like the 3.0 screen, faster shutter, and live view upgrades. I figure I could sell my 30D and replace it with the 40D. Or should I just wait till the 50D is cheaper?

Buy glass. Don't upgrade your body if you have a 30D unless you've already got all the lenses you want/need.

Seriously, the MINOR upgrades wouldn't mean shit if you're shooting with a kit lens or something comparable. It would be a shitty investment.



Two of the best photographers I know shoot with 10D's. One recently upgraded to a 20D.
