I don't repeat what they are currently writing about though. I looked at last nights box score and saw that Amare blew balls and posted about it. I don't read twitter frequently.

Knowing stuff is all about having good sources. There isn't enough time in the day to do all proprietary work by yourself.

If you look at where the majority of best teams from the past few years (Elite 8 type teams) ranked in defensive efficiency, it is very concerning that our team is nowhere near these teams in terms of overall ranking. Granted stats don't always predict the future, but they are a better predictor than say a guy like Dick Vitale making shit up based on his gut feel and the "eye test".

We were nearly an elite 8 team last year and our defense is arguably the same. Given our 18 game ACC schedule, we will probably improve a bit.

I mean, this team has played good defense in stretches. Especially lately in our games against the Bonnies and western Michigan we looked really locked in during our late first/early second half runs. The trouble has been sustaining that for 40 minutes. That may be too much to ask for given our lack of depth and foul prone front court.

It's comforting that our players have athletic ability and size. It's not like we're getting beat defensively because we're small and slow. Even Scott Wood is tall and long. So you'd like to think that we'll improve as the season goes along. Because the potential is definitely there.

What is discomforting is that defense has always been one of Gottfried's problem areas. So it might be on the players to improve this year (maybe that's what happened last year...who knows).

All we need is an average defense...because our offense is just plaing STRONG. Let's hope we can get there.

Let's discuss the acceptable number of ACC losses. I'm hoping for 0 obviously but I think 3 is a reasonable expectation and I would say that 5 or more would be disappointing. 2 or less is typically the magic number to claim the title but with the two extra conference games now, I think 3 losses would probably assure at worst a two seed in Greensboro. Thoughts/expectations?

yeah but this team is soo loaded. By far the most raw talent in the ACC.

If we finish second to duke and get a 2/3 seed will be happy. But this team really should go far or it's gonna be dissapointing. I know that that's a lot of pressure for Gott, but how often is a coach gonna be able to work with this type of talent.

we really replaced CJ Williams w/ two stud freshmen. Painter and AJ positions are super thin and a cause for concern. Although AJ was always a weak sub, but Lewis is even weaker. Painter wasnt great but he played decent D and had a chance to score when Howell or Leslie had to come out. JVB cant really do either of those things.

We really just have to hope that CJ/Rich can stay out of foul trouble, that we can make some free throws when it counts, and that are great O can continue to be good enough to bail out our atrocious D.

Also, though, the ACC certainly looks down this year, so worse than 3rd will certainly be a disappointment.

yea CJ was by far the biggest loss. The combo of losing Painter/Harris/TDT together almost combine to equal that loss (Harris and TDT are valuable only b/c you are essentially playing the big man lottery once Painter left hoping one of the remaining 3 improve significantly and 3/1,000,000 chances are better than 1/1,000,000). CJ, however, is also the most replaced though w/ Purvis and Warren.

i agree in as much as i don't believe in slashing expectations before conference play, or at any point in the season really, just b/c it looks like they're not going to be met. i expect this team to be better than it was last year. that means some wins in the duke and carolina games and that means an elite eight or better. just how it is.

Its almost like people are getting UNC and Duke mixed up. How can your season goal really be to beat a team that might not even make the tournament? Pathetic. If we lose any game to UNC it will be a major disappointing. Splitting with Duke should be our goal. We have more talent than every team left on our schedule but Duke is obviously just better coached. Getting swept by Duke would be a disappointing but not as bad as splitting to UNC.

Expecting to beat duke will only set us up for disappointment. As the #1 team in the country who has easily trounced over 3 top 5 teams, we will need the best showing of the entire season to take them out.

On the other hand, we have a bone to pick with carolina. We've been wanting to beat roy for a while now, and this is our chance.

This season I expect to beat UNC at least once, finish in the top 3 of the ACC, make it to the ACC championship game, and make it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Any less will be a disappointment for me. I think based on our talent and experience and how we did last season these are not unreasonable expectations.

That being said, I think we are capable of competing for the ACC regular season, winning the ACC tourney, and depending on our seeding I think we could make it to the final four this season. But that is probably just me getting my hopes up.
