Play in games haven't historically helped "build momentum" for other teams in them so to argue that it suddenly did in VCUs case would be pretty ridiculous.

That's b/c historically there haven't been play-in games except for 16 seeds.

I'm flying from RDU to Nashville tomorrow for work. Then on Friday I am flying back. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for coaches making connecting flights to and from Raleigh.

Oh wait! I am flying Southwest. What kind of A-list coach is going to be flying Southwest?

Smart, who will turn 34 on April 8, is 55-20 in two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will play Butler on Saturday at Houston in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament…

…According to multiple sources, Wolfpack officials also are considering at least two additional candidates for the job. One of those candidates already has given preliminary approval of the basic framework of an agreement with NCSU."

My guess is Miller said ...sure i'll come... fooor...hmmm. 3.9million?

So without the play in game VCU would have lost to Georgetown?
I would rather take the chance on Smart being the real deal than go with a safe (mediocre at best) coach.

yeah, likely...

Time to stop bothering with the rumor mills and just accept that we will have Smart ... and if not then GM. I'm ok with either one.

If we end up with gregggg I have dibs on the greggggg credibility watch thread.
Players will hate him
Recruits will hate him
Fans will hate him

Sounds like a recipe for winning right there.

I don't know, but you can't completely discount its effect just b/c it's a "play-in game".

I'm guessing the guy who agreed isn't Marshall or Grant since they are still playing. And neither of the two are a big name.

^^ She would if it was something epic like a three way battle between Barnes, Miller, and Donovan.

But obviously the truth is getting turned down constantly and *crickets* when asking the search firm how things are going.

Quote :
"Meanwhile, more than a dozen sources — including several at Florida and N.C. State — shot down the rumor that Florida coach Billy Donovan has any interest in the Wolfpack job. One source with the Gators said Donovan spent most of Tuesday traveling to and then relaxing at his beach house in Florida. The source said Donovan was “amused but not surprised” at the baseless speculation, which led to an unusual number of texts and phone calls to the coach.

“That (Donovan to NCSU) was a bad rumor even by bad-rumor standards,” one ACC source said. “I thought the Bruce Pearl rumor was about as ridiculous as it gets, but the Donovan stuff may have been worse. I’m not sure what’s worse, actually: that people with websites make these things up, or that fans continue to follow the people with websites who make this stuff up. It should be embarrassing to everyone involved.”"

Disregarding the big names that we won't get...I hope we land either Smart or Grant. I like black coaches. As long as you can avoid being the "best friend coach" like Sidney and actually garner some respect from them, I think they have an advantage in recruiting today's young, black athletes.

I don't want Marshall...but it won't be the end of the world if we get him. He can coach, I just don't know if he can handle running a major program and he has a history of attitude problems (clashing with administrators and players).

Only in this case, "people with websites" were members of the media who were reporting that Donovan inquired about the job and had an interview. If that was bullshit, then OK but you can't blame the fans.

I think that's why Coach K and Roy do so well in recruiting. They identify so well, having been born poor black children themselves a la Navin Johnson.

Just build a winning program and recruiting takes care of itself.

At this point, I'd be very happy with Shaka...yes he'd be a little risky, but I like his upside and think he'd be a good hire.

On another note, I've never really read Pack Insider until the last couple of days. The people on those forums (and writers) throw out some pretty crazy rumors (crazier than PP, if you ask me). People are saying that Greg Swaim and SFN have been smokescreens. What I don't understand is, why all the talk about smokescreens? Do search firms really do that? Is it possible that the search committee and firm have just been very tight lipped and have not let much information leak? People are painting Debbie Yow as some sort of Jedi...playing mind tricks with the entire fan base and local media. I think Yow is a good AD and will make a good hire, but the smokescreen stuff is just crazy...

I wonder who would be willing to pay Shaka 4 mill a year? The only big openings right now are NC State, Oklahoma, and Mizzou (possibly Purdue if Painter does leave)...right? I don't see any of those school putting up 4 mill for a coach who has 2 years of experience...

The dude was just throwing an arbitrary number out there to illustrate how vcu can't pay coaches as much as some other programs. In no way would we offer ANYONE $4mil/year.

lol, that's what is killing me. Writers hear that Donovan is in Raleigh, so they call up UF...who, if he was smart, would think he was at his obscure beach house, where he spent most of the day traveling to get there. Oh wait.

Still an improbable coach, but still, don't be retarded. If you're hearing multiple sources on both sides of the call, then something is going on.

^People in here were saying Donovan would be worth $4 million...which is probably the only coach we could get that would be worth it.

No one, but your whole argument earlier was predicated on his race and youth being relatable with recruits. I like the guy and think he'd do well here, but not because he's black. Top recruits don't go to schools because they have black coaches. Look at the top 10 classes for next year. Ten white coaches. And Mike Anderson doesn't count.

"WSU making a run? Marshall has been to the tournament 7 times and won a grand total of 1 fucking game. I really really doubt he would have suddenly made a run.

They beat a "power conference" team (pac 10 was a shitty shitty conference this year) who had their only viable scoring option in foul trouble the entire night."

So Wazzou lost by 31 because their best player was in foul trouble. LOL that's worse than your best Sidney Lowe excuse.

Quote :
"Earlier in this thread you admitted to Turgeon starting to build a program at Wichita State. After he left what happened? Did Marshall continue building on his success? Nope he sucked a big fat cock while he implemented his system of boring ass conservative set plays (a fucking 3 on 1 situation after a turnover last night and the players just sat there so they could run a set goddamn play)."

Marshall had 5 scholarship players when he arrived. An even worse situation than your boy Sidney Lowe inherited but I am sure you knew that so since your so knowledgeable about basketball right? In year 4 he has already set the WSU record for wins with 28. Beating Alabama and winning the NIT would be a great accomplishment but I'm sure the usual dumbasses will say "uhhh duh it's the NIT".

The guy averages 22 points he scored 6. Either WSU played incredible defense or they got lucky when he picked up his 3rd foul in the first half. Night in night out that Thompson carries the team so for him to not be playing for a good portion of the game was HUGE.

So if gregg is such a good coach why has no one except for WSU taken a shot. He had enough success at Winthrop where he would have been offered other jobs if there weren't underlying issues.

Quote :

Nope I sure didn't because I (along with the rest of america) don't really give a fuck about WSU basketball and their boring ass head coach. He has already shown what his ceiling is and it is low.

If gregg marshall is hired I will be waiting for Harrow, Brown and Leslie to all transfer.

this has always been my question about Marshall

when you make the NCAA tourney however many straight years at a school like Winthrop, why didn't a bigger program than WICHITA STATE take a chance on him? Theres something about him thats just not right
