If I did more Windows development for work I'd probably try to go, though honestly I'd be most interested in the WP7 development.

Well the cat is finally out of the bag, at least a little bit. If anyone was watching Jason Zanders part of the keynote, then you pretty much saw what I've been working on for a year and a half. I actually created the vision and design for most of the ALM story for visual studio vNext . Feels awesome to finally be able to talk about it

I wont pic bomb the thread, but if you watch the keynote here: http://www.studiosevent.com/newscenter/?id=teched110516?contentID

Pretty much all of the vNext stuff is my design

The Modern Web portal for TFS
Agile tools (taskboard, backlog management, et al)
Powerpoint for storyboarding and UI mockups
The Team Navigator in visual studio (my work, context switching, task based development)
The "Actionable" feedback tool for customer and stakeholder feedback

I'm super excited about it all!

I just got through installing .Net Framework 4 on an older laptop. Here's to hoping that for Framework 5 they can come up with an installer that doesn't do the following:

1) Copy a file
2) Sleep(100000)
3) Repeat until done

I downloaded the redistributable and the install still took 40 minutes.

Its frustrating for sure, but its not just sleep+copy. It's cray cray how much is going on behind the scenes. I install the .NET framework about 4x a week now and it's a lot, lot faster for me (on a P4 desktop no less)

fuck, google tv has been able to do that tv part forever

i'm interested to see if they just passthrough and overlay from an external tv box, or if it becomes your tv box, and what providers it'll support

Except smartglass is available for Windows 8, Windows Phone 8, Android and iOS.

So what does surface have to do with Xbox?

I'd have assumed that it would have better/more features on its native OS

First Metro, and now this? More than a few people in Microsoft marketing and legal should be fired over this. I don't care that its Microsoft this happened to necessarily, ANY company that loses a trademark case once a product is live didn't do their homework during product development.

on a related note, skydrive on Windows 8.1 is perfect, it absolutely blows any other cloud service out of the water.

^No it isn't. Can't change the folder location, and it still destroyed my machine for ~5 hours after installating 8.1 while it builds its db cache.

I do love the file virtualization, and service level integration. But there's still a lot of room for improvement

You can change the folder location in the RTM build of 8.1, even to an SD card.

What the FUCK Microsoft? I just got a copy of Office 2013 for my personal machine and they took out the option to install it on anything other than the C drive. I don't have 5GB free (SSD system drive) on my C drive so I can't install Office 2013? Grrr.

Ok so I tracked down an .MSI install where I was able to customize a secondary drive for installation and it still gives me a "not enough space" error because I have less than the install size on the C drive. This is stupid.

The Poisonous Employee-Ranking System That Helps Explain Microsoft’s Decline

To be clear, we're defining 'decline' as multi-billion dollar profits and year over year growth.

Microsoft suggests bias in media's 'puzzling' Steve Ballmer coverage
Quote :
"Intertwining mentions of Dickens and Kurosawa, he goes on to cite examples of these "quick-twitch" and "puzzling" stories that have come from "so many writers, pundits and self-promoters." In particular, Shaw takes issue with shining a light on Microsoft's missteps "while ignoring the successes" enjoyed by the company elsewhere. "Another approach has been to go a step further, criticize our lack of 'focus' and suggest that those other successes are actually a distraction from what they believe should be our single priority." The Verge touched on issues of focus and Microsoft's ill-fated consumer products in our report analyzing Ballmer's tenure as CEO, also highlighting the executive's strong successes. "What these themes reveal is a single narrow frame through which the writers and pundits view the industry itself that leads them to reach these conclusions."
