Tons of people don't care about the NBA until the finals, or about the NFL until the playoffs, or about the NHL until the playoffs, or about college basketball until march madness. Probably more "bandwagon" fans in those categories than the amount of "bandwagon" fans for soccer at the world cup. There is a 52 page thread on this board dedicated to this year's EPL and a 44 page thread dedicated to our US Men's National Team that has been following our progress since game 1 of qualifying a couple years back. In general, the people who normally post about soccer on this board are also the same ones interested in the WC and the soccer talk stays in threads dedicated to soccer.
You'll notice that there is hardly ever any arguing over soccer on any of the other levels that people follow it at. The only time there is any sort of argument or flaming starts when other people come into a soccer thread or start a thread with the sole purpose of bashing soccer. I mean if making fun of one sport that you don't like makes you feel better about yourself then so be it.
But the fact remains that nearly all of the complaints the soccer-haters have about the game can be related to other sports as well or the fact that it is a different sport and you can't force it into the same mold as whatever your favorite sport is. You can argue it all you want, but it comes down to personal preference plain and simple. The thread seems more like people trying to justify to themselves why they don't like a certain sport.
and boohoo about soccer fans posting in your i hate soccer thread. let's face it, the only reason someone makes a thread like this in the first place is to argue with soccer fans, pat other soccer-haters on the ass, and then make it look like soccer fans are annoying you with all their soccer propaganda. 6/13/2010 8:55:24 PM |

This really doesn't do much for the argument, but it's still a good read from famous football writer Peter King:
Quote : | "5. I think the best thing I can tell you about the World Cup, compared to American sports, is that it's about three times as intense as the Super Bowl. I was sitting in this mid-sized stadium (no press box, just a row near the top of the lower level, covered, outside), about 15 minutes before the game, with no teams on the field, no immediate promise of players coming out of the tunnel to take the field, and the vuvuzelas were trumpeting at maybe 90 decibels by themselves, and the fans were screaming and chanting to add maybe 20 more decibels, and I'm thinking, "There's no one in sight, and the anticipation is so ridiculous that these people are screaming themselves silly.'' It's no knock on the NFL. I love big games in the NFL. But this -- with games in 20 or so town squares on huge screens EVERY day of the World Cup, and the nation taking the month off to watch them (not in person, maybe, but on these screens or on TV) -- is some great sport right here.

Quote : | "In the U.S., no stupid horn is slowing the World Cup ratings. Through the first weekend of the tournament, covering eight matches, ESPN and ABC averaged some 4,247,000 viewers per match, up 80% versus the first eight matches of the 2006 World Cup. Saturday's United States-England game attracted about 17.1 million viewers between ABC and Univision, the Spanish-language network (this total includes 13 million viewers on ABC, and 4.1 million on Univision). The game was the most-watched opening round World Cup broadcast ever.
The combined viewership of USA-England beat the ratings of the first six games of the NBA finals, which averaged 16.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen Sports (though the crucial Game 5 alone drew 18.7 million viewers, according to Nielsen). USA-England trounced the Stanley Cup finals, which averaged 5.2 million viewers. It even compared favorably to the average viewership for an NFL regular season broadcast, 18.4 million — though U.S.-England lagged the average viewership for an NFL playoff game, 36 million, by a very healthy margin." |

I kick right or i kick left, maybe youll block to the right, or maybe youll block to the left...o no it doesnt matter dang it because i just missed the goal by 15 feet

that is definitely something I like about our team: we are hardly ever diving out there. We've been one of the hardest working, non-diva teams in the tournament so far. The closest we have to anyone diving has been Dempsey and really he is more at fault for embellishing legit fouls (and he has taken the grunt of a lot of nasty elbows and nasty tackles this tournament in general)
