Will be home for turkey day. Hoggard hosts southern durham in the third round, then head back here to raleigh for the drinking bowl(ecu nc state) since that's the only fun to come out of that game....

Scheduling worked out well for me, too ... next week, Fuquay-Varina travels to Greenville, which is close to where my in-laws live. So, eat turkey and watch (college or pro) football on Thursday with my parents, eat turkey and watch (high school) football on Friday with my wife's parents...sounds like a good holiday break!

Just because they are big doesn't mean they can play football. I saw St. Paul's last week with a guy that weighed 375. He held his man so much that night that he should have been booked for larceny.

CCHS really outplayed them by a few scores more than the final scoreboard showed. was never worried the whole game.

Once again Ben Herlocker rolled. Dono how many rushing yards he had but he got 5 Rushing TDs(shoulda been 6) and 1 interception

just sitting here wondering when Wilmington Hoggard will get some ranking respect. Won tonight 52-14 over Southern Durham. It was 52-0 and they put in the 3rd string which they scored one on and the other td and 2 pt conversion was with no time left. Next week on to Greenville Rose or hosting fuquay. Lets see what happened.

Greenville Rose 28, Fuquay-Varina 21

Rose jumped out to a 21-0 lead, and most teams would have folded against them, but the Bengals fought back to a 21-21 tie. Rose made the clutch plays late in the game to move on, but F-V gains some respect outside of the Triangle by showing a great deal of heart.

Asheville A.C. Reynolds, the top seed in the 4A West, missed a late field goal and lost by 1 point to Boone Watauga. Earlier in the year, I watched Reynolds beat Watauga easily.

Next week:
(7) Char. Butler at (1) Indy rematch (4AA West)
(11) Durham Riverside at (1) Garner rematch (4AA East)

(6) West Charlotte at (4) Watauga Co. (4A West)
(2) Wilm. Hoggard at (1) Greenville Rose (4A East)

Shelby 30
East Lincoln 14

This game was much closer than the score. The Mustangs had a chance, but had a couple plays go against them. This was a special season for East, and a special team. They made me proud again to have worn the green, orange, and white jersey. I can't have anything bad to say about Shelby. They play with class, and are a hell of a team. I don't see them getting beat.

Other scores:

Carver 22
N. Gaston 21

Reidsville 30
Newton-Conover 29

West Charlotte 35
East Gaston 25

Thomasville 35
Cherryville 6

NW Cabarrus 37
Burns 33
NW Cabarrus scored 27 points in the 4th qtr.

I was there. I wouldn't go that far. Rose just made some stupid mistakes in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and Fuquay capitalized on them. The refs also gave F-V a touchdown on a push-off and there was a questionable fumble given back to F-V.

^^^ I was there, and saw some of the TV re-broadcast the next the day, and both of the calls you mentioned (that went against Rose) were definitely wrong, but pass interference in the end zone could have been called on Fuquay's best drive. Clearly, Rose was the better team and deserved to move on. However, when no one has played within 3 TD's of Rampants all year, it says something for Fuquay-Varina to play them to a 28-21 score on the road.

Manteo has had quite a year, recording 9 shutouts and giving up more than 7 points only once.

Northampton-West's offense (42.3 ppg) vs. Manteo's defense should be very interesting.

ER is better than Catholic this year, but Catholic has been in (and won) the state title game, with a lot of the same players, so that experience will help.

ER will never win a state title as long as Burton Cates is coach, they always gets close and blow it because he lets his players do whatever they want and runs an undisciplined team. They've been hung over playing big games so many times it would make you sick.

Sure wish I could've gone to Hoggard@Rose. Sounds like a nail biter.

I feel a lot better about my boys at Greene Central losing to Clinton now. Looking at the scores, you'd think GC would've made it to Groves Stadium if they could've held off Clinton.

Teams from the ECC (the conference Clinton plays in) always seem to turn up their game in the playoffs.

Hoggard and Rose was a great game, from what I heard. With about 3 minutes left, Hoggard missed a 2-point conversion that would have tied the game. After stopping Rose (including stopping them on a gutsy 4th-down attempt), the Vikings got the ball back in the last minute or two, but fumbled it away, allowing the Rampants to run out the clock.

Southern Vance won tonight to be in the state 2AA title game. I'll be their broadcasting on the radio. fantastic50, tell us something about Shelby. I know they are badass, but I'd like some info that backs it up.

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC 25
NORTHWEST CABARRUS 14

third straight title game

go cougs. i was surprised they held us to only 25 points however, they had only averaged 12 PA over the entire season including the playoffs and thats with 6 losses even in the regular season. NW had a good defense this year, just no offense besides their first few playoff games

My Independence boys are beating that Butler ass right about now, 42-17 in the third. Looks like 7 in a row and the streak continues.

yeh, except for that even if they win this game, they still have one more to go to get the 7.

Hoggard game was one of the best football games I have ever watched seriously. We got down 6-0 and then they celebrated and had a long extra point which he missed. Then we were on the 20 about to score and lateraled a ball right to them they took it to the house so were up 12-0 with the 6 we gave them. Their holder bobbled the ball and there was another missed XP. Then we reeled off 21 straight to end the half up 21-12. Then we had a safety and were up 23-12.then they scored again and again still missing more extra points. its 31-23 and they have to kick an XP to be up 9 and 2 possesions and he hits the cross bar. We get the ball back with 408 left. Within 3 plays and 1 minute we score.31-29. We call a timeout and go for 2 it gets tipped at the line and its over....They get the ball and try to run the clock out but they go for 4th and 2 since their kicker sucks and they thought they could get it. They didn't. We get the ball back on the 40. down just 2 now with 2 minutes left. We have Casey Barth(connors lil bro) who has kicked a 52 yarder this year. We get sacked and the time is ticking. He is throwing it and getting sacked again next play and they call it a fumble. Game over. Brandon Miley the QB for hoggard threw for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns, and also ran one in from 25 yards out. Hes going to the shrine bowl and we BETTER recruit the guy. Luke Caldwell had 6 catches for 201 yards and 3 td's. Im not a homer but the REFS gave them the game. period. Whoever won that game was going to kill west charlotte. We beat them by 14 earlier this year.

I only follow HS football because my brother is a big time kicker in the state of NC. his team W. Rowan was knocked out by Anson, but he held the number 1 HS kicker spot for NC all season by NCpreps.com. Prokicker.com had him number 1 for punting after a summer of combines. Some big schools wanting him include....Clemson, NCSU, Wake Forest, UGA has shown a little interest. Coastal Carolina has offered him a full ride for kicking. It's easy to get hooked on HS football and seeing who is doing what, because you get a headsup on who is going to be showing up in the college arena.

Southern Vance (the only unranked team of the 16 playing for state championships) will certainly have their hands full playing Shelby, a 2-touchdown favorite. The only team with a tougher task will be Riverside (against Independence).

Here's the breakdown:

Shelby (15-0)
Rating: 126.1 (#4 overall, #1 in 2A)
#1 in Southwestern 2A/3A conf.
Schedule: 104.4 (#55 overall, #4 in 2A)
Beat #87 Freedom (4-7) by 22
Beat #95 Ashbrook (4-8) by 3
Beat #33 Crest (10-3) by 14
Beat #214 Lincolnton (5-7) by 28
Beat #48 Brevard (10-3) by 20
Beat #22 N. Mecklenburg (10-3) by 7
Beat #74 Burns (10-4) by 26
Beat #219 Kings Mtn. (4-7) by 35
Beat #188 R-S Central (5-7) by 47
Beat #249 Chase (5-7) by 42
Beat #290 E. Rutherford (1-10) by 28
Beat #164 W. Lincoln (4-8) by 26
Beat #104 W. Henderson (7-5) by 14
Beat #69 E. Lincoln (11-3) by 16
Beat #32 Pisgah (13-1) by 8

S. Vance (13-2)
Rating: 112.0 (#53 overall, #8 in 2A)
#1 in Northern Carolina 2A conf.
Schedule: 93.8 (#287 overall, #75 in 2A)
Beat #306 E. Chapel Hill (1-10) by 31
Beat #264 S. Granville (3-8) by 22
Lost to #146 Webb (7-5) by 7
Beat #240 N. Vance (2-9) by 7
Lost to #42 SW Edgecombe (12-1) by 20
Beat #299 N. Nash (0-11) by 17
Beat #70 Bunn (12-2) by 5
Beat #334 Roanoke Rapids (2-9) by 28
Beat #243 NW Halifax (6-5) by 21
Beat #276 Warren County (4-8) by 21
Beat #359 Franklinton (0-11) by 56
Beat #234 N. Lenoir (3-9) by 18
Beat #197 Saint Pauls (7-6) by 29
Beat #145 Northwood (9-5) by 11
Beat #71 Forest Hills (9-6) by 6

Shelby's strength is their defense. Against ranked teams, they held Crest to 7, Brevard to 3, and North Meck to 7, but gave up 20 to Pisgah last week. Southern Vance is certainly on a roll, with 10 consecutive wins, but hasn't played anyone even close to as good as Shelby...it would be a huge upset, but anything can happen in high school football.

sweet. Im gonna be going to the 3AA game most likely (unless the weather is bad) to see my HS. Still know all the coachers and a lot of the players are younger brothers or friends of mine and all heh. Should be fun being in CF and all even if theres no crowd

ER has a better team this year imo. We have hardly any depth (some of our best offensive players are our bes defensive players and play on both sides in our playoff games..resulting in some injuries).

I still have no idea how we've done well the past 4-5 years. A bunch of scrawny white guys :p. I guess we've been lucky to have had Starcevic or Herlocker at halfback the last few years. they pretty much have been our teams.

Anyone catch the FLA HS Champ game? It was on at the sports bar I was at (must be a slow sports night) but anyway, it was 35-14 with a shade over 2 minutes left. Thomas Aquinas scored quick, got the onsides kick and scored in 3 plays, then got the onsides kick again and scored with :45 left. 21 straight points to tie it in less than 1:30...

Lakeland ended up winning it in 2OTs but it was ridiculous the talent on those two teams. The RB for Lakeland reminded me of Steve Slaton (I think the kid is going to UF)
