"He's already fucked up. But you're fine with him staying and going 6-5 next year and making another shitty bowl and we can keep him???"

It's painful, but I think strategically it makes fine sense to have this approach.

1) You give him an ultimatum that if the trend of the program isn't clearly positive - and going 6-5 isn't clearly positive then he will be done.
2) Tell him beginning mid season (or earlier if it is really that shitty) we start taking a close look at the program. And he will be fired before the end of the season if the same problems that have existed for the past 3 years are still hanging around. And we can begin the coaching search sooner.

Barnett makes good points. Who are we going to get this late in the game? The biggest risk we have is a drop of in recruiting by keeping him on one more year. But I think if we play it smart and bring in a big name after, then the recruiting comes back.

There are plenty of good coaches out there. And who's to say Cowher is going to come after taking a year off anyways. There are too many ifs. Keeping Amato for another year can only bring the program down even further.

i dont see what chuck is currently doing to warrant another season.

if you cant be fired after the season he has had (embarrassing the school with the akron talk, a losing record, no bowl, recruiting has fallen behind duke, and an entire fanbase in an uproar) then i am going to be a college football coach

or a meteorologist

Great. One article from some N&O idiot and everyone is now poised to settle for another dismal season with nothing to look forward to and another UNC loss.

Chuck is gone pretty much, the only reason to NOT fire him at this point is to wait and see what Cowher says in January.

Rumor around the big guys is though that Chuck has already gotten word and it will be announced Monday, also they seem to think that Fowler will retire sometime in the new future and for some reason Doc Holliday will be our new AD.

there you have it.

not to mention the fact that there is no evidence that cowher will be the best thing since sliced bread if he comes here. As has been said a lot recently, offense is more important in college football than defense is. Cowher is a defensive minded coach and I think would be a lot like things are now . . . play to be in it at the end and not play for the win from the get go. How many years was he mediocre to maybe slightly above average in the NFL? How many times has he come up short when it really mattered? He only won the superbowl last year out of luck.

While everyone says they want Cowher, I think they would be much happier with someone like a Norm Chow that would bring offensive production and have mediocre defenses.

yeah, that's going to look real good to potential candidates... we'll keep you around as a lame duck coach expecting you to do your job while we continue to actively look for your replacement.

if that is the case, you might as well cut your losses now.

I think our defense is going to be pretty good regardless since we've usually had that throughout NC State history. You're right about the offense though because you can tell the years that we had it going on.

Are you kidding me?

How was Spurrier as a pro coach?

How is he as a college coach?

ANYONE who wins the superbowl is a good coach.

Just curious, has any successful NFL coach ever went to college and had equal or greater success? I only know of college coaches who went to the NFL, failed, and came back to college (Spurrier, Pete Carroll, etc).

a lot of the reason we have been defensive over the years is because we have traditionally had coaches from a defensive background.

But I didn't mean that we would be bad at defense. Just that people would be happier with a good offense that can put points up on almost anyone and ok or even subpar defense than they would be with a good defense and a ok offense that struggles (like last year's team).

Cowher had some good years in Pitt for sure, but he has also had some bad ones and has had trouble winning when it mattered. He has been to the playoffs 10 times and of those 10 has made it to the conf. champ 6 times and the Superbowl 2 times.

^^Two completely different situations. Spurrier made his name in college. Cowher hasn't coached anything but pro and they are two different beasts.

Did you watch the same superbowl that I did? It was ugly, there was nothing good about it.

I'm not saying he wouldn't do well here, I'm more than willing to give him a shot. It is just stupid for everyone to act like he is god and would instantly cure all our problems. But whatever, this will fall on deaf ears.

i am of the opinion that if chow wanted to be a college head coach, he would already be one, and probably at a top 20 school.

but, yeah, id like to see chow's offense run again in Raleigh

I think he would have the ability though to pick and chose his assistants with a wisdom and selection that hardly any other college coach would. who wouldnt want to work for a superbowl coach, thats a hell of a resume builder.

and kids will want to come here with him coaching them, same as with Lowe I think he can use that line "I know what it takes to be the next Bus or Big Ben...come run with me"

ohh and chow for OC no doubt.

Plus, I doubt Butch Davis would talk smack to him the way Buntcake did to Amato.

Cowher would be like : "So how bout them Browns....?"

Charlie Weiss is doing well at Notre Dame. Granted he was never an NFL head coach, but he has taken his NFL philosophy to ND and turned their program around.

^ i'd have to believe he'd have a good showing in the college ranks, if he were to come. we're talking about a guy w/ a .627 as a head coach in the nfl.

I'm not saying that Bill Cowher will be the best college coach since Knute Rockney, but... we have to admit that coaching in college is drastically different than coaching in the NFL.

for starters, you actually recruit your players. and while, I'd have to agree that this is a disadvantage to cowher initially, I can't help but think that he would improve pretty quickly. After all, he can say "I coached a superbowl team, yadayadayada." That's gonna have a lot of pull. He might have only had a 63% winning percentage in the pros, but imagine if he could have picked all of his players. how would his percentage have changed?

and, imagine what kind of recruiting advantage he would have. It's one thing to be an equal in the recruiting race, but a superbowl coach? That's simply going to help a ton. The rest would really just depend on how good of a coach bill actually is.

you guys have to remember bill cowher's main attraction to big time recruits isnt going to be hey look i have a super bowl ring....it is going to be hey look i have coached in the NFL son, i know people, i can get you to the pros.

A little birdie told me that Amato is gone and there will be an announcement on Sunday.

According to this birdie, he was already gone before the UNC game, but they didn't have a pool of interested replacements to call on so they waited until this weekend to announce it. BTW, Cowher is not on the list of possible replacements.

My aunt is lifetime friends with Bill Cowher's wife and she told us some things tonight at Thanksgiving that made me cream my fucking pants. She was talking about Cowher's house in Raleigh and his daughter's boyfriend at Princeton (hockey player/senior) and how Bill likes him..blah blah blah........but then my ears perked up when she said

"Bill wants to come to State badly but the biggest thing right now is the timing. He might stay in Pittsburgh another season or two before he comes back for good"

then I asked her about it and her husband (who is a Duke fan) told me "Don't worry, its a matter of time."

My uncle is a bigtime Wake Forest donor and practices law here in Raleigh and my other uncle is a football coach (and Duke supporter) They are friends with alot of UNC alumni too and get wind of info in advance. One thing they said about Butch Davis that made me laugh was that UNC sent out the signal that they didn't care about ethics, just winning...and that by hiring Butch, UNC will become "Thug U."
