^^ Apple already said that they went with Edge cause of the lower power consumption. One reason why iPhone beats all other smartphones on battery-life I think.7/3/2007 5:11:06 PM |

^^^ and that's bullshit, they went with it because they KNEW they could add it in later and ppl would flock to the stores to buy another one. edge may use less power, but 3G takes considerably less time to get things done. i'd like to see how much energy it takes to transfer a certain amount of data from each protocol before i believe that's the real reason they went with it 7/3/2007 5:26:40 PM |

i'd say it's not worth owning until they switch carriers, AT&T/Cingular is crap
really the only draw to this thing is everything except it's phone capabilities... they should sell a stripped down version without the phone part and sell it without any cell activation crap for $100 less and it may be the next best video/wifi enabled ipod

What your asking them to do is port the UI to the IPOD lines...
I have heard a few people say get rid of the web browsing features and make it cheaper... at first I was going to try to argue that its the same web browsing part of the processor already used in all the other phones that can browse the internet, but then I think about the "this is no stripped down mobile internet, this IS the internet" comment... so I dunno
cost of parts is ~$200 according to one of the webpages... right now they are in cost recovery phase and have to pay for all the R&D and patents and software they wrote... like the original Ipod was also $500... 3 years it'll be $399 4 $299ish 7/4/2007 9:39:03 AM |

yeah, what exactly do you think MS will do....? They have owned the Smart Phone market (software wise) for several years now, taking it away from Palm. Now most phones are Windows Mobile or Blackberry, i imagine.
unless you are suggesting that MS is going to produce a device by themselves to rival the iPhone. I seriously doubt that. 7/4/2007 12:45:05 PM |

I played with one in the apple store last night. It was smaller than I imagined it, and seemed to work really well. Tried to turn off wifi to play with the internet but that didn't seem to make a difference. As is the only think that's keeping me from really wanting to get one is the storage. I don't think I'd be interested until I could replace my iPod with it - meaning for me having around 30-40 gigs storage. 7/4/2007 2:34:48 PM |

I just played with one at the apple store..... The UI was very impressive, I like the idea of menu based voicemail. (I had this idea years ago and wondered why the mobile carriers have not).
I also played with the blackberry curve while I was there and if I was going to switch to Cingular would go that route. 7/4/2007 5:31:40 PM |

google maps integrated with a cell phone is an amazing idea.
I was at a cookout earlier with Metricula and some friends from work. We wanted to see Team America later; so i went onto my phone, searched for "Ral--" (Raleigh, NC came up) "blockbuster", and a map came up with pinpoints of locations. I tapped the nearest one and an address card came up with its street address, phone number, and buttons to calculate directions to/from it came up. I tapped the phone number and it dialed. 7/4/2007 11:11:10 PM |

Did it happen to rent the movie and pick it up for you?
Read off directions?
I mean, I'd be floored, but there have been services that have done practically the same thing, if not more, in cars for years. 7/4/2007 11:17:24 PM |

People are starting to hack it, and it appears to be running OS X compiled for ARM.
Of course, they haven't found a way to run unsigned code yet, but I bet within 2 weeks, they'll be 3rd party apps unofficially available.
One kinda neat thing...
Quote : | "There's two apps in it you probably haven't seen, the DemoApp and the FieldTest (you can get the latter by dialing a code in the phone app -- *3001#12345#* (type all those chars and hit call, it's safe) ... The FieldTest app is kinda nifty--at first glance, the most useful thing that it shows is the number of cell towers the phone is currently seeing, as well as their signal strength and network affiliation. ^^not really true at all.
I've called 411 at least a couple of dozen times not even knowing the name of the place I wanted to find. Hans and Latisha are always helpful, you just have to TALK to them like a normal person.
I really like when the loud black ladies answer, they are way more fun to talk to anyway. I've gotten everything from driving directions, alternate locations, alternate businesses that do the same thing (aka dominoes, pizza hut, papa johns) and of course phone numbers 7/5/2007 2:46:52 AM |

You can't say 'not true at all' to something to experience that clearly is relative. As an example, my roommates and I experiences with TWW customer care has always netted us with a positive outcome (albeit with effort) whereas my parents have fought tooth and nail with them constantly to the point where they basically told my parents to get dsl. Being that I used to be a cingular rep, I'm pretty sure I 'know how to talk like a normal person.'
The visual aspect of having a bunch of locations populated on google maps of a given store or fast food joint, and then being able to click and dial each specifically is way better then calling 411 for the simple fact that when you hang up, you can scroll click another location if your call doesn't net you what you needed for whatever reason. With 411, you'd call them back and redial and rinse repeat.
"But sandsanta!!11!! I don't mind that at all. Its easy if you're not a fuck'n idiot!!11!"
Good for you, grab a cookie. I however, would rather tap away on my big ass screen while giggling like a gay little school boy. 7/5/2007 10:44:50 AM |

411 costs like $1.25 every time you use it, at least on my Verizon plan I've been using 1-800-GOOG-411 http://labs.google.com/goog411/ for a while now, and it works quite well. The only thing better, i imagine, would be a visual version of it, just like the iPhone has.
btw, looks like basically all apple stores are sold out http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/ 7/5/2007 10:50:21 AM |

^i mean that is really what it comes down to.
When I have the need to call 411, its usually when im in a batshit hurry and either running, driving or hauling some other kind of ass to get somewhere. It's much easier for me to 411 it and let someone else mash keys on google for me (which they will actually do, if you ask) to find what I need to know.
Yea it's like 1.25 a call, but I used to have inphone or some other such service and it was awesome, it was like 10 or 15 cents a pop and totally worth it for me. 7/5/2007 11:39:22 PM |
