The PS3 has to be one of the worst media extender I've ever used.
Nothing like a list filled with a million "Unsupported Type" entries to get to the one MP3 it can actually play. 6/22/2007 9:17:06 PM |

That's weird. I don't get a single unrecognized file type on mine. You might be doing it wrong. 6/25/2007 10:54:35 AM |
Stein All American 19842 Posts user info edit post |
It doesn't load any of my WMVs or MKVs and when I try to get it to load my music folder, the entire system locks up.
It also doesn't play any of the WMAs I have shared (though the option to enable their playback is checked), but that might be a DRM issue.
So I'm not exactly sure what I could have been doing wrong though. Luckily, the console is now out of my living room and I've recovered the floorspace it had been taking up.
At least the 360 has the decency to not even show you the files it can't play rather than giving the vague notion that it can't play the files nor identify them at all.

My roommates modded xbox plays every single format we've thrown at it, including anything in 720p. It's odd that the xbox 360 and ps3 have so much trouble decoding stuff. A cheap 40 dollar dvd player with a usb on the front will play almost anything too. It's odd the next gen consoles have so much trouble doing so. Is this a copyright/codec issue? 6/25/2007 1:35:49 PM |

^^Like I said, my PS3 has no problems with ANY of my music. I've got m4a and wma files in the mix. There is a 2-3 second delay when I hit play, but once it's streaming there are no problems.
Now, video is another story. And I have a feeling that's more of a "Sony owns half the content you're trying to pirate" issue. 6/25/2007 2:37:39 PM |

^Not necessarily pirated content. Just how well the ps3 does with various codecs within .avi, mkv, mpeg, etc. All i know is a cheapo sony dvd player with a usb on the front is able to play pretty much any video file format i can throw at it. Why wouldn't sony embed this within the ps3 as well? 6/25/2007 2:42:42 PM |
FanatiK All American 4248 Posts user info edit post |
I was just implying that Sony assumes any (avi, mpeg, divx, etc) video you're trying to play is probably copyrighted (probably a fair assumption, actually). That's why they are not in a rush to enable you to play them. They'd rather sell some of those fancy Blu-Ray discs. 6/25/2007 2:49:24 PM |

Yeah but when you buy the newer sony DVD players, they play all the formats you want. I hooked my external HD up to a sony dvd player through the front-usb and it created a directory and it played every video format i had. 6/25/2007 2:52:47 PM |

Honestly, I'm sure it would play my non-DRMed WMAs just fine, the issue is that it can't even load my music folder. I go to my network share and it completely kills the PS3. It has to be rebooted.
As far as videos go, not a single WMV file seems to work on the thing. Maybe I missed something, but no matter what WMV it was -- completely legit or a HD-DVD rip -- no dice. It doesn't seem to play WMVs right off a network share, but hey -- the 360 doesn't play lots of shit, I'm not holding that against the PS3.
However, the fact that instead of just not displaying the file or just displaying it's filename with a little "can't play" icon, it just goes "Unsupported Type". That's great to know, but it doesn't get me to the shit it can play any faster. Maybe you can configure that, I don't know.

You've posted the same thing in 3 threads. The consoles wouldn't have any trouble decoding the material, they just don't have the codec to do it. With Microsoft it makes sense, they want to push their WMV format above all others. Not really sure why the PS3 is limited other than that they're probably still trying to either acquire rights to the other codecs or have some weird agenda.6/25/2007 6:27:07 PM |

You dont own a single avi, mpeg, or divx video that isnt pirated?
Have you tried the media extending feature at all?
I have personally seen the ps3 lockup every single time it tries to access a folder with alot of files. It was amusing at first but got kind of sad...quickly.6/25/2007 6:28:27 PM |

1. Actually, no, I don't think I do. I'm not aware of any store that sells divx or avi files. 2. As stated + per context, I use the media extender functionality and it gives me no problems with audio files.
My beef is just with video playback. 6/26/2007 10:51:40 AM |

I Got the XBox 360 HD DVD drive for $140. If HD DVD goes down the shitter then oh well, I'll just be able to buy movies cheaper for a while and I'll hold out til Blu Ray players cost less than $150. 6/29/2007 1:22:16 PM |

I fail to see how it couldn't be the fault of the PS3 when it's the PS3 and only the PS3 that has had that problem.

Also, didn't you just buy a computer to use as media center only to find it didn't even play the files you bought it to play? Hell, your living room and garage is littered with hundreds of dollars of shit you guys bought and never use. Honestly, you talk to me about wasting money, yet you spend more time bitching about the PS3 than you do playing the 360. 7/10/2007 9:52:23 PM |

in all fairness he bought a hard drive, and a case. the other hard drive was 80gb, made odd clicks on startup and the case lacked a side. The antec powersupply that ran the thing was inside a "powmax" enclosure because it croaked 2 years ago. 7/11/2007 12:05:47 AM |

I bought a video card too! I spent $200 and cobbled together a basic media server, sure playback isn't as great as I hoped, but I can just stream everything I watch to the 360 which has never had trouble loading a folder containing files it claims to support.
But really, it's great that your console requires third party software (of a competitor no less) to provide advertised functionality though. Good looking out for your customers, Sony. 7/11/2007 12:11:32 AM |

I don't even understand how it came to that. The PS3 is actually a fully featured Blu-ray player out of the box. It's also the cheapest, and has the best audio capabilities of any BD player. The 360 requires not only an external ($200) add-on, but also only the priciest version of the thing allows playback at the formats native resolution of 1080p (please, VGA is a joke). It's also extremely noisy, doesn't output lossless PCM (making it a non-option for anyone interested in high end A/V), and does a shit job of upscaling normal DVDs. These are facts, not opinion.
The only thing you could argue is whether or not Sony's decision to bundle BD playback into their newest game console was smart. The added price have caused sales to suck shit since release, but on the other hand, it seems to have given them a substantial advantage in this format war.
Unless MS starts bundling an HD-DVD drive into a new SKU (or drops the price of the thing to 50 bucks) with HDMI 1.3 and upgraded audio capabilities, the 360 is a non-factor in the HD format war. 7/12/2007 9:41:15 AM |

Did you even read my post? I said it wasn't a Sony vs. Microsoft war. I said the 360 shouldn't even be part of the conversation because it's not really a viable option for HD-DVD playback. The problem with this thread is that everytime someone mentions how great a BD player the PS3 is, and how that may help decide the war, someone jumps in and says "Yeah, but it doesn't have any good games!!!". Hell, I brought this thread back up 2 days ago to talk about BD movies at Blockbuster, and then people immediately started shitting on the PS3 again.

A few comments from my perspective:
- I personally can not tell the difference between a VGA, DVI, or HDMI 1080p signal on my display. Maybe you can, but I can't.
- While the XBox is louder than a standalone player, I can't hear it while watching movies or playing games unless I'm 3 ft from the display
- Lack of lossless audio output is a disappointment but it still sounds great on my cheap receiver.
I bought the drive for $140 and am pleased with my decision. While it may not be perfect it's a cheap solution to tide me over until either HD format is affordable.
Also, note that the HD DVD drive can be connected to your PC, and with appropriate software and hardware, supports 100% of the HD DVD spec.

Yes, it's a cheap option for you. But not for the vast majority of the ~50 million Americans (only 5.5 million 360s) with HDTVs who just want to be able to play either Blu-ray or HD-DVD. They would be insane to buy a 360, as standalone players are not only cheaper, they outperform it in terms of playback. The PS3, on the other hand, is probably your best option for Blu-ray. But, oh no, it has no games 7/12/2007 11:57:22 AM |
