i'll say it again:
i went into the purchase planning on buying an STi. I drove both of them and tried my best to talk myself into buying the STi...I like the looks better, and I like the sound and power delivery of the engine better. Longitudinal engine with selectable F/R torque bias is kinda cool, and I like the interior better in some aspects (don't really like the blue, but whatever).
I ended up buying an Evo IX...it handles SO good, and the power tuneability is like no other car I've ever seen.
also, didn't Golovko sell his STi to buy an Evo? 10/6/2007 3:16:35 AM |

Mitsubishi Concept-RA Announced for Detroit
Quote : | "Mitsubishi Motors has announced today the global debut of a new sports car concept, the Mitsubishi Concept-RA, at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show in January. Just coming off of the buzz from this recent North American release of the Lancer EVO X at Los Angeles weeks ago, Mitsu cracks us over the head with this sleek aggressive sports coupe version of the EVO X featuring Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) and the Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission which uncoincidentally are both used in Lancer Evo X (JDM version). For maximum sdriving control and dynamics active steering and active suspension are dropped into the pot for good measure. With no shame in diesels these days powering sports cars, the Concept-RA gets a new low-emissions 2.2-liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbodiesel featuring variable vane geometry while producing 150 kW (204 PS) and maximum torque of 420 Nm (42.8 kg-m). To save weight and increase crash worthiness, the body is an aluminum space frame along with the hood while the fenders and other outer panels such as door skins are made from recyclable plastic resin." |

EVO X vs STI - Tsukuba Lap Times
Quote : | "It didn't take long for Japan's journalists to get the new STI and EVO X side by side, and the results are now officially in. Tsukuba circuit regulars Kazuo Shimizu and Manabu Kawaguchi spent an afternoon thrashing around the notoriously twisty short circuit just north of Tokyo and here (drum roll please) are the best times they could ring out of the AWD rivals:
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X : 1:06:46
Subaru Impreza WRX STI : 1:05:95
So there you have it. The new engine placed further forward in the engine bay of the EVO X than in the EVO IX has indeed proven to be a handicap, while the STI's "wheel at each corner" longer wheelbase plus new double wishbone rear suspension has proved its worth.
Neither car is quite as quick as its immediate ancestor though.
Check out this 15 year rivalry of the EVO vs the STI as recorded at Tsukuba:
EVO / STI
2006 1:05:07 / 1:04:72
2005 1:04.88 / 1:04:17
2003 1:05:30 / 1:04:69
2001 1:05:17 / 1:06:56
1998 1:04:69 / 1:06:73
1996 1:07:00 / 1:05:92
1994 1:06:52 / 1:06:26
1992 1:10:90 / 1:07:99" |

what a shame. blows my mind.
i can't imagine ANY purpose that the new Evo serves (and apparently the STI as well)...it's no longer THE performance per dollar solution (shit, buy a lightly used IX if that's what you want). I can't imagine it selling on its looks (the previous Evos probably didn't either, but I think the X is downright ugly). I doubt it responds nearly as well to aftermarking tuning...and if you want luxury and comfort, I find it hard to believe that there isn't a better solution.
and I don't think it'll be able to compete in the "jack of all trades, master of none" market (i.e., 3 series, Infinity G).
Nice job, Mitsu. Why don't you go ahead and piss of a bunch of customers by voiding their warranties while you're at it?

yeah, not a fan of that gaping space in the nose, but overall that looks good.
the new Lancer/Evo X? Not so much.
Couple that with the fact that it's slower and softer, and you have the trifecta of mitsubishi fucking away an opportunity when they really needed to connect hard and take it yard.
not to mention that their build quality ranges from questionable to shoddy, and their customer service is bottom of the barrel.
I pretty much hate everything about Mitsubishi. I have a great deal of overall disdain for the new Evo (although it does have a couple of trick bits). I can't wait to sell my IX--the dash has been rattling pretty substantially since about 15k miles (dealer "tried" to fix it under warranty), has had a perceptible vibration from the front end under certain conditions since about 20k miles--even after changing tires and having 4-wheel alignment (again--dealer looked at it under warranty, but couldn't find anything).
Now at 21k miles, I think I may have felt the beginnings of a slipping clutch (not an uncommon issue for Evos. I've heard of MANY instances of clutches dying at even lower mileage). Just to see what I'd be up against if the clutch did end up going bad, I called the dealer. They confirmed that my warranty would not cover it, and that they would charge $2300 to replace the clutch (unless it also needed a new flywheel, in which case it would be more).
He also asked me if my car was completely stock (it is), and informed me that Mitsu is COMPLETELY voiding warranties if ANY modification is done (i.e., if you do suspension mods and the motor blows up, you're screwed. he also said he's seen them start voiding warranties for CAT-BACKS).
I informed him that such practices were specifically forbidden by law. He replied "I don't know, maybe, I'm just giving you a heads up."
I told him that I knew he didn't make the rules, but I would never, ever own another Mitsubishi product.
That said...man, what a helluva ride.
_______________________________________________________________________
He suggested that if my clutch does die, to replace it with an aftermarket unit. I said "I concur, although that will void my warranty."
He replied "Yeah, it will."
I replied "But I guess it doesn't make any difference, because Mitsu is going to fuck you out of the warranty most of the time, anyway."
he said "That's what I'm getting at."

actually, that's a lie. next up is a bigass truck for skiing this winter and moving back to NC from WA...but then it will be another hot car. E46 M3, S2000 (maybe even go SC'd again), C5 'Vette, or maybe put an LS1 into a 2g Miata (although with the 6 months on, 6 months off deployment cycle I'll be on, I don't know if I want to tangle with a major project). Maybe something else entirely--who knows?

lies. they have to prove the modification was a direct cause of the failure. i went a few rounds with dodge over this and did a lot of research when they tried to deny replacing a water pump under warranty because of my exhaust/suspension/axle mods.
also, i'm not aware that they can completely void the warranty. only deny individual claims. this i'm not really sure about though.1/9/2008 2:15:14 AM |

that's what i told him (moss-magnuson or magnuson-moss act or whatever it's called, not to mention industry standard and common sense). mitsu is absolutely notorious for being bitches about their warranty (which sucks, because their shit breaks a lot)
hell, they even have tracked down rosters of auto-X's and HPDEs and voided the warranties of the particants with Mitsus (generally Evos). I don't know if they search through Evo boards and stuff, but I've seen a number of people who are careful not to divulge any info publically that could allow Mitsu to figure out who they are and void a warranty.

You can probably force them to repair the car with some (unrelated) mods, under warranty, but that doesn't mean you want to fight them every time you have a problem with the car.
E46s are cool, but unless you need the large trunk/usable rear seats... I go w/my broken record response -->911. Ahmet 1/9/2008 2:41:20 AM |
theDuke866 All American 52839 Posts user info edit post |
^ that's what I'm saying...Mitsu is a fucking shitty company with shitty products--it's just that one of them does drive really, really astonishingly well. Knowing what I know now, I think owning anything they make is just asking for lots of trouble, headaches, annoyances, and expense (though I reiterate--the Evo is an absolutely phenomenal machine from a pure driving aspect--and it's practical in many ways...It's so good that I can see looking past the bad aspects of owning one--but ultimately I conclude that it's like a stripper...she has a place in the bedroom, but not as a serious girlfriend.)
i love the E46 interior and daily-driver perfection aspect of the car--the M3 variant would prob be enough perfomance (including but not limited to power) to keep me entertained, whereas my 330ci was not (although it remains my favorite car I've ever driven for general purpose daily driving).
Porsche interiors don't generally do it for me quite as much, although the sheetmetal is pure sex.
However, I'd LOVE to have a 911. The problem is that the M3 is already pushing (or maybe over--I haven't decided) the limit of how much I'm willing to spend on a car right now. The 911 is generally even more.
That, and S2000s are well made, very dependable, a lot of fun, and I'm guessing far cheaper to repair when shit breaks/wears out...all for around half the price of the german stuff.
but I don't know...I change my mind once a week, and this purchase is 4-6 months off, anyway. I'm also going to be buying a house, getting a promotion (and substantial pay raise), acquiring another jet ski, motorcycle, and maybe a cheap truck...and spending half of every year in a combat zone...so who knows? there's a lot to consider.

M3s are pretty easy to work on (aside valve adjustment every 30k). 911s on the other hand, i wouldn't know where to start. parts alone will make M3 feel like ford escort.
other than that it is a superior performance car in just about every way.1/9/2008 6:23:57 PM |
Ahmet All American 4279 Posts user info edit post |
That's true, parts will usually cost less on the M3 (which is relative, as something non-German will likely be cheaper still). 911s are fairly robust, and the 996 shared a lot of parts with other European cars as well as the Boxster, so the prices may not be as extreme as you'd think. Add to that the fact that Porsche doesn't use timed to destruction parts like plastic thermostat housings or degradable fan blades that like to explode into plastic end tanked radiators, and... again it may be closer than you think. Don't get me wrong, I really like BMWs and the M3 but they're different cars. The 911 won't go through consumables quite as fast either. Lighter car with larger ball joints, larger tires/wheel bearings, etc. Again, it is a car though, and like all things mechanical, it will wear and it will break. You win some, you loose some... Mitsubishi Concept-Ra Unveiled at Detroit
Mitsu should bring this to showrooms with the quickness.
Quote : | "Athletic pure coupe
Green is still the word in the automotive world, and Mitsubishi is bringing its own view on the topic to the 2008 North American International Auto Show. The sporty coupe combines cutting edge drivetrain technologies with the latest clean diesel design. The Mitsubishi Concept-RA packs one of the latest gadgets from Japan - already featured on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, namely the Super-All Wheel Control system which consists of Active Center Differential, Active Yaw Control, Sport ABS and Active Stability Control component systems.
But what the Lancer Evo does not do is partner the S-AWC with a 2.2 liter 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve diesel engine. We knew that Mitsubishi was working on a new diesel for Europe, but also the US is warming up to diesel after the German diesel invasion. This diesel produces 201 hp with 310 ft-lbs of torque and meets US emissions standards.
In an attempt to further improve performance, fuel economy and safety, the Concept-RA is built around an aluminium space frame while the hood, fenders and outer panels are molded from impact.resistant and recyclable plastic resin." |
