^^ It's hard to get a sight picture at Davi's because it's dark as fuck. I stopped shooting over there years ago. Stupid rules, retarded pricing.. just not worth it.
Taurus customer service is notorious, and not in a good way. Figure on at LEAST a one month turnaround. Glock customer service is much better, and with Glock armorers just about everywhere, you might not have to send it to the manufacturer at all.
Personally, I'd recommend a Steyr M9A1 from CDNN.. At $349 for a tenifered polymer fighting pistol, it is by far the best deal available in the gun market today.
I carry it's subcompact cousin, the S9A1, shown here with a Blade Tech UCH:

Lobes85... you seem to be renting a lot of guns at davis. What are the prices over there for renting + range? 5/11/2007 11:22:49 AM |
dave421 All American 1391 Posts user info edit post |
they're $15 for range. guns vary on pricing from $5-10 if I recall correctly. If you use their guns, you MUST use their ammo (kinda common). They have Ladies' day on Tuesday and Wed. is customer appreciation day which is something like 1/2 off range time, 20% off ammo (actually makes it about what you'd pay if you bought it yourself), and something off on gun rental too I believe. PDHSC is $15 for the normal range and $20 for the "tactical" range. I have no idea on what their rental price is. They don't have a big selection so I always end up going to Davi's when I want to rent something new ( ). And to update everyone, I spoke to the guy at Eagle One the other day. They're hoping to be open in 3 weeks. He said they've made a lot of progress and are being held up by the company providing the steel (I assume for the backstop). Don't know how accurate that is since they've missed about 6 "we'll be open by" statements so far. When I was there 2-3 weeks ago they pretty much had nothing done. He said to call in 2 weeks and they'd have the pricing set up for membership as well as all of the various options hammered out. 5/11/2007 2:02:30 PM |

and typically, lets say to shoot two different 9mm's
it'll be 12 for the range fee, 5 or 7 bucks for the gun and then 10.95 or so for a box of ammo
shooting two different guns in a day, you can expect to spend 30 bucks or more 5/11/2007 2:52:09 PM |

I have my ccw, but always just shot in the woods back home, but I need to go to a range. When you go to PDHSC, will I be allowed to take my pistol in to the store part, loaded, or do they want it to be onloaded in the building at all times?
How does it work there, do you have to buy targets or do they just provide them? I read on their website that you had to use theirs, just wondering if they were provided.

The Five-SeveN is an almost obscure, dandy little handgun that fires a high velocity cartridge. The ammunition is not particularly cheap and your local Wal-Mart won't have it. There are several shops around here that stock it though. The trigger is stiff. The magazine holds 20 rounds. The gun is quite well made.
If you happen upon one for anything less than $950 or so, it's a bargain. This pistol, which is sold in small numbers in the US mostly to collectors and target shooters, will soon become the target of gun grabbing politicians everywhere.
That said, I'd buy it before any of the others listed. I've fired one and they're quite accurate, even at extended distances which are usually not thought of as suitable for pistols.

theDuke866 All American 52838 Posts user info edit post |
eh, if that's it, that's no great deal to me. i can't imagine needing 20 rounds when 15 wouldn't suffice, and the odds of me needing to punch a vest in a self defense situation are fairly small. if some apocalyptic shit happened, i always have the 7mm, which would never even know the kevlar was there, unless they had SAPI plates and stuff, in which case I'd probably have really big problems, anyway.

yeah, true
but the recoil is minimal and the accuracy is good at much longer distances than standard pistol calibers
they've already banned some of the ammo for it

If you want a polymer frame (I dunno why you'd limit yourself to plastic) then that would throw the P229 out. It has an aluminum frame.
The SigPro would be the lightest, the 229 would probably feel the best balanced (due to Al frame), and the USP compact would have the best fit and finish (Sigs are behind by a hair). All are reliable, though I've heard of a couple of earlier SigPros with feeding problems. I personally don't care for USPs, they feel like you're holding a 2x4 and the controls are too far even for my long fingers. However they do have ambi controls available (neat but useless since I always shoot right handed). The finish on the USP will last much longer than the Sigs. I've shot a 9mm USP-F, a 45ACP USP-C, a SigPro in 40S&W, and I own a 228 (almost exactly the same as a 229 but in 9mm). Of those I prefer the 228. It just feels right.
If I could have any one of those then I'd pick the Five-seveN...and promptly sell it to buy a Sig 220. The five-seven is rather useless. Sure it pierces armor, but so does my 480Ruger and 308Win. It may have little recoil, but that's BECAUSE IT'S A FREAKIN 22. If you wanna pierce armor then save yourself $700 and buy an AMT Automag in 22magnum. Walmart sells that handy dandy armor piercing CCI TNT +V ammo for $10 a box.
Truely you can't go wrong in quality by picking a Sig, H&K, Glock, Springfield, S&W M&P, or other auto made by a big company. You've just got to shoot them and figure out which one feels the best.

Fumbler: He's not getting an SG55X like that, ever, unless SIG decides to market more than the glorified AR variant of the 556. Import restrictions mean the 55x series isn't going to come to the US any time soon, unfortunately. You can, however buy them as a resident in Canada, and attempt to petition the ATF to allow it in the US when you return. Good luck with that, however.
Ds97Z: gg with the JBTs
The 5.7 ammo has absolutely terrible ballistics. It's on par with .22WMR. It's a superlight bullet that travels faster than most pistol ammo, that is it's only draw. Unfortunately, to get that speed, it sacrifices bullet weight, meaning it's an ineffective incapacitator.
That old saying "Get there the fastest with the mostest" applies to bullets, too. Given that all handguns are by definition, shitty manstoppers, why limit yourself to a bullet weight in the .22 caliber range, when you can have a much more effective manstopper in so many other calibers? If you want a wildcat round, the 357SIG is the answer. If you want a manly fucking round, 10mm is calling your name 5/20/2007 11:28:15 PM |

^^ got a Marlin 882 SSV. it's a .22 WMR (rimfire magnum). Simmons 3-9x32mm glass. the SSV is the stainless bull barrel. i had the trigger worked...the trigger is waaaaaay better than stock now...the tradeoff is that it did some weird stuff to the safety. sometimes it won't stay in place, and sometimes the firing pin doesn't cock when you cycle the bolt. if it happens, just raise the bolt and lower it again, and it's usually fine.
personally, i much prefer it to stock, but it is kind of a weird quirk.
i'll sell it for $200. only problem is that i'm in FL, so either you'll have to come here, have it shipped to an FFL, or there is a chance that i'll make it up to Raleigh in the next few weeks.
i'll sell it for $200 and throw in the extra ammo i have sitting around for it (i think it's about 30 rounds or so, but i'd have to check to be sure). 5/21/2007 1:52:38 AM |

^it is. Was sold to civilians for a little while, then the Feds and cops started crying so FN slammed the door on us. The JBT's can still get it, if it's ordered by a department or agency on their letterhead. You'll see that ammo occasionally floating around in the open market these days, but not much. If you want it, the going rate is around $20+ per round. 5/21/2007 10:51:51 AM |

^^ Punching armor is a relative term. Most all rifle rounds will penetrate a Level II vest. The AP ammo is usually classified as AP if it can penetrate a Level III vest, but with a trauma plate, it will probably take multiple center of mass hits to penetrate. 5/21/2007 2:28:58 PM |
