let's pick apart a ciriticism of al gore that is years old in a thread that has nothing to do with the internet. ok!

if that's fair game: bush doesn't have to use much energy in his house because he's drunk out of his mind all the time and his wife is busy committing vehicular manslaughter.

Seems like he was working all along to get this change, take this for what it's worth when you consider the source

Quote :
"Over several years an architect has retrofitted the Gores’ home with energy-efficient windows, lighting and other energy saving efforts. For more than two years the architect prodded the City to amend its zoning code to allow solar panels. The panels will be permitted after April 1, and they will be installed promptly on the Gores’ home.

The Gores live in the East South-Central climate region that has the highest per-household energy usage of any region in the country as reported by CBS News and AP. It is about 50% higher, and is caused by a combination of cold winters and hot, muggy summers. However, due to energy conservation improvements, the Gores’ per-square-foot energy use is 19.1 kwh, less than the region’s average of 19.83 kwh.
Some articles state a figure of 10.43 kwh that is not correct, as it was figured on the inflated usage claimed by the Nashville front group."

LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE FOLLOWING TWO HOUSES AND SEE IF YOU CAN TELL WHICH BELONGS TO AN ENVIRONMENTALIST.

HOUSE # 1:

A 20-room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house all heated by gas. In ONE MONTH ALONE this mansion consumes more energy than the average American household in an ENTIRE YEAR. The average bill for electricity and
natural gas runs over $2,400.00 per month. In natural gas alone (which last time we checked was a fossil fuel), this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not in a northern or Midwestern "snow belt," either. It's in the South.

HOUSE # 2:

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university, this house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house contains only 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on arid high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F.)

heats the house in winter and cools it in summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas, and it consumes 25% of the electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater
from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Flowers and shrubs native to the area blend the property into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE # 1 (20 room energy guzzling mansion) is outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It is the abode of that renowned environmentalist (and filmmaker) Al Gore.

HOUSE # 2 (model eco-friendly house) is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas. Also known as "the Texas White House," it is the private residence of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

So whose house is gentler on the environment? Yet another story you WON'T hear on CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC or read about in the New York Times or the Washington Post. Indeed, for Mr. Gore, it's truly "an inconvenient truth."

So I guess since his house is so great Bush is justified in advocating unlimited off shore drilling, drilling in ANWAR and the complete castration of the EPA?

I would say that the difference between having multiple employees in the house vs living somewhere else is probably an important factor, but with Bush spending so much time on vacation even that probably isnt true.

It's been posted before in this very thread.

And I wonder how much energy Bush's house uses when no one is there, or I presume several people that keep watch over it?

Could Gore's choice of residency be more representative of the green movement? Definitely? Is it anywhere near the atrocity it was made out to be? Definitely not.

No, just a hypocrite, which means he does not really believe what he is saying. As such, it does mean we should not take him at his word, relying instead on other sources of information to determine whether his information is accurate or not. As it is, just because Gore does not believe what he is saying does not mean it is false: Gore very well might be wrong and what he believed he was saying purely for political reasons turns out to be scientifically true... Imagine his shock.

^ If you are going to attack the messenger, at least read this thread and see how "headlines" don't tell the whole story.

His architect tried for 2 years to be able to install solar panels. I mean, I guess he should just move his entire enterprise somewhere else if he can't have his solar panels where he wants to live. Personally, I think he should live in a tent to prove a point and before I can take his message seriously.

^^ Hmm, do you seriously believe throwing in some solar panels would render gore's house just as efficient as George Bush's house?

Nevermind the fact that most solar panels consume more energy to make than they will ever produce and putting solar panels on Gore's mansion would just make things worse.

Besides, what is your point? A man that goes around the world telling people they should get creative trying to shrink their carbon footprint has himself done nothing to reduce his carbon footprint. Has he made his roof white to reduce AC needs in the summer? All his efforts have managed to save barely 0.73 kwh or 3.8%? Bullshit, if he wants us all to live like he wants us too the only effect will be reducing energy consumption by 3.8%? Well then, either he has not bothered to reduce his own footprint or doing so is largely a waste of effort.

The legitimacy of his possible "shell" company are still debatable, but this statement is patently false if the company is legit.

Seems like it might take 2 years of wrangling with city officials to get this approved.

You mean his vacation home? That was built by cult members specifically to be self sustainable? It's like I said in the other thread, it was dumb luck and ironically funny that the GHWB ended up in a home like that. How much carbon was spewed into the air by the bulldozers that created the massive man made lake on the property? How much energy does the guest house at Crawford consume? I assume it is built similar to the main ranch, but no one mentioned it. How much upgrading would need to be done to Crawford to support live in families and support staff to run a business out of it? How cold are the winters in Crawford compared to Tennessee? I partially agree with you that Gore has a major credibility problem and his message isn't going to resonate with rational folks. But that doesn't mean the message is dead, and it's a pointless exercise to try to directly compare his home to Crawford Ranch 1v1.

Maybe I don't understand the definition of hypocrisy but I'm confused at what point Al Gore has said every person should consume less than the national avg. of energy, surely only half the population is ever able to achieve that by definition?

I didn't realize he owned the house for less than two years. Either way, it seems we have enough evidence to prove one of the following:
A) Gore has not bothered to increase the energy efficiency of his home (vacation, whatever) because he does not believe it is worth doing
B) He tried but failed: increased energy efficiency is so costly and difficult that even Gore, the leader of the converted, could not do it

If the answer is B), then his philosophy was not worth having: the tiny 3.8% savings are not worth the effort, so stop listening.

I really respect your economic insight on this board, I wish other people had as much depth to their commentary as you...but whatever "free market" theory you are trying to attach to this story isn't making sense.

A) This isn't true
B) This isn't true

You haven't read any pieces of information about this story except what the conservatives have used to smear. You didn't even read the link I posted just before your entry into this thread. Here it is for you again

Sure, it isn't as extreme as Crawford ranch, but Gore is far from being a hypocrite on this matter.
