Quote : | " Evans intends to be Pack's No. 1 QB He's preparing 'like I'm the guy'
Chip Alexander, Staff Writer RALEIGH - N.C. State's Daniel Evans was well-tanned and appeared well-rested Wednesday, energetic and eager to crank up a new football season.
Evans ended the 2006 season as the Wolfpack's starting quarterback and is intent on beginning the 2007 season as the starter.
That the Pack changed head coaches, firing Chuck Amato after last season's 3-9 meltdown and then hiring Tom O'Brien, hasn't changed his mind-set.
O'Brien hasn't committed to a starter, saying Evans would continue to compete with sophomore Harrison Beck and redshirt freshman Justin Burke when camp begins next week. But O'Brien also notes "there's no substitute for experience," and Evans, a redshirt junior, is the one with the experience.
"Whether I feel like I'm the guy or not, I know I'm supposed to be preparing like I'm the guy, and that's the way I'm approaching it," Evans said. "I guess the other two guys should do the same thing, but I'm approaching it as if I'm the starter."
Evans, like most college players, has had anything but a leisurely summer. The former Broughton High star attended both summer-school sessions, taking four courses, and will be nine hours from earning his business management degree.
A typical day has Evans up at 5:15 a.m., with a protein shake "breakfast." He's at the Murphy Football Center at 6 o'clock for stretching, followed by running and agility drills, then more than a hour of weight-room work.
He's in class from 9:50 a.m. to 1 p.m., then heads back to the Murphy Center. After a few hours of "free time" often spent on classwork, he has 7-on-7 pass drills, finally finishing about 7:30.
"By 10 or 10:30, I'm ready for bed," said Evans, who lives with his brother Andrew, a wide receiver, in an off-campus apartment.
Evans' offseason emphasis was on better footwork, especially in deeper pass drops, and a bigger body. He said he "gained back" the nine pounds he lost last fall and is at 189 pounds.
A year ago, Evans wasn't sure when or if he'd get to play with Marcus Stone seemingly entrenched as the starter.
But after State's 1-2 start, that changed. Amato turned to Evans, who helped lead the Pack past Boston College and Florida State and soon had Stone working at a new position, tight end.
Evans, in nine starts, passed for 1,843 yards but closed the season with six touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. In a seven-game losing streak, he had one touchdown and nine interceptions, and his late-game fumble against North Carolina sealed a dispiriting 23-9 loss.
Rather than damaging his psyche, the trial by fire made him a better player, Evans insisted.
"I'm not sure if I got down on myself after a few losses and it spiraled or not," he said. "But I think having been through that, I'll better be able to handle adversity this season, knowing how to react and maybe how not to react. Not that I was lashing out against anybody, but just in being able to stay in the right frame of mind."
There's also the matter of being better able to handle the demands of being the starter -- the film work, the practices, executing the game plan on game day.
"As the backup, you're trying to prepare as best you can but it's not the same," he said. "As the starter, you know it's riding on you -- probably the success of the team is riding on how you perform. So it adds a little more pressure and urgency in your preparation. As the season progressed, ... I felt I got in more of a routine and more comfortable."
It showed in spring drills, when Evans completed 41 of 63 passes, with eight touchdowns, in three scrimmages. Beck, a transfer from Nebraska, may have the strongest arm, and Burke, Evans said, may be the smartest of the QBs. But Evans performed the best of the three in the Red-White spring game.
O'Brien said he is looking for consistency at QB. He wants a sound decision-maker, someone to "manage" the offense.
"Someone to play within the framework of the offense and not only try to hit the home-run ball," the coach said.
Evans believes he can be that someone for the Wolfpack. " |
