SI.com rates State's frontcourt as #4 in their Top 15 frontcourts for this season.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0710/top.frontcourts/content.12.html

Quote :
"Brandon Costner (pictured), Ben McCauley, J.J. Hickson, Gavin Grant

During last season's ACC tournament, in which the Wolfpack made a miraculous run to the title game as a No. 10 seed, Costner and McCauley showed the potential to be a dominant front line. The addition of Hickson, a five-star forward from Georgia who can take care of the dirty work in the paint, only makes N.C. State an even better darkhorse pick in the ACC."

SI.com's Top 15 Frontcourts

1) Georgetown
2) North Carolina (GO TO HELL CAROLINA!)
3) UCLA
4) NC State
5) Texas A&M
6) Stanford
7) Kansas
8) Cal
9) Kansas State
10) Louisville
11) Indiana
12) USC
13) Gonzaga
14) Arkansas
15) Southern Illinois

GoPack.com is doing interviews with all of the freshmen. They have videos at the top that everyone can watch. Some of them seem nervous, which I can't blame them. They go from little known high school star to being interviewed often. Also you factor in that this is how a lot of State fans will first hear them, and you know that they would like to impress. A lot of pressure comes with being a D-I athlete, especially at a big basketball school like NC State. They come out as follows:

* Monday – Johnny Thomas
* Tuesday – Javi Gonzalez, Clayton Beard
* Wednesday – Tracy Smith
* Thursday – J.J. Hickson

The freshmen will get more comfortable in talking to the media in the coming years. Besides a lot of them will lose any shyness during their time in college.

It's good to hear from them all that the veteran players have helped them when they are in need, and have helped them get oriented to everything. I've heard that the team is like a big family and that the guys routinely hang out together.

So as of right now i've seen tracy, gavin, and brandon have quotes basically saying we should be a contender this year. God I hope they are right.

^ Depaul, Georgia Tech, Duke at 16.00 !! just to name a few worth pointing out as total crap

The guys who came up with this list don't know their asses from a hole in the ground. I mean we beat the team at the top of the list once and almost beat them a second time. And that was w/ mucho less depth and a point guard at 75% health. How do we somehow get worse by gaining players and experience? Atsur was good for us, but not that good.

^ You're probably right, but Duke at 16.00? I mean come on. Their one true big man is Zoubek. And their gaurds are just ok imo. Do the makers of the list really think Kyle Singler alone somehow makes them a contender all of a sudden? If they do, I stand by my original statement.

I am sure they take a shitload of information into consideration, not just new players, etc.

Just one of many possible examples.... Say, hypothetically, Duke and State have identical ACC records, and split wins at home. Hypothetically, they are the "same" teams. When it comes time for selection-honestly, who do you think gets the better seed(and easier first couple of games)-Duke or State? All that matters is the tourney and who has the best shot to do well in March.

^ Yeah, but their tourney performance last year, when they still had McRoberts, doesn't instill a lot of confidence in someone betting on this group of Duke players to win the tournament. At least not if the better was me. I'd put more stock in State's ACC tourney performance last year. The kids we have now know how to get it done in crunch time.

Now that I've thought about it more, I am pretty sure the most plausible explanation to these odds is this.....

The bookmakers are catering to the betting public. If someone was to compile a real list with the actual, probable odds of winning the NC, State would very likely be much lower. UCLA would most def. be lower as well, but the bookmakers are banking on the public taking the lower odds on the more popular teams that really shouldn't have such low odds.

Determined to boost men's basketball attendance, UM is about to unveil some of the most creative ideas we have ever seen from a local team. Besides dropping most season-ticket prices by about 50 percent, UM will add a hot tub, a sandbox and lifeguard tower in the student seating section -- students will be encouraged to attend in beach attire -- and elsewhere in the arena, in-game shoe-shines, massages, haircuts and a computer work-station will be offered.

coach k is proven to work magic in march. plus they have lots of freshmen coming and and nobody knows how good they might be. being duke alone makes duke a popular pick every tournament just like unc. Maryland lost almost everything and is 51.00 because of gary williams. Uconn isn't good at all and they are 31.00 because with their coach they could have some amazing player come out of nowhere and get hot in march. this is not a who is the best team line. if you don't agree with the lines bet on them and make moeny or shutup because i took 5 dollars on ncstate to win it all. They probably won't but its a steal for those odds.

"Pack Players Raving About Freshman Hickson
N.C. State Basketball 2007

By J. Mike Blake

Posted: Oct. 12 10:09 p.m.
Updated: Today at 11:21 a.m.

The most heralded of N.C. State’s incoming freshman certainly looks the part.

J.J. Hickson, already considered by his teammates to be the strongest player on the team, has all the measurables: a size 17 sneaker, a 37-inch vertical leap, and a muscular 6-foot-9, 242 pound frame.

According to other players, Hickson’s long arms and explosive leaping ability make him a threat to dunk any time he’s near the hoop.

He hardly resembles a college freshman, except perhaps for his face lacking facial hair.

Forward Brandon Costner – a third-team All-ACC selection from a year ago - has taken notice, and called Hickson an “athletic freak.”

And while that may be true, it’s not just Hickson’s physical attributes that have impressed those around him.

“He brings unbelievable work ethic, I mean unbelievable” coach Sidney Lowe said. “When we’re doing our two-hour a week workouts, he’s already got his 6 a.m.- 7 a.m. workout and still came again at 3:30. He works hard, he understands the game, he’s passionate about the game, and he’s a talented young man.”

Hickson is slowly becoming known for that work ethic and effort, starting back when he was practicing in preparation for the McDonalds All-Star game.

Observers were shocked at how hard he competed in the practices and in the game, gawking at the Georgia native’s desire to play defense in the up-and-down scoring fever that those games typically produce.

“My passion for the game won’t let me let up and just let someone dunk,” Hickson said. “I guess that’s something that’s been instilled in me since I was young … I come in and I work hard. It’s just me.”

During practices, Hickson has been going against junior Ben McCauley and Costner. McCauley had nothing but good things to say about the youngster.

“It’s been a great challenge. It’s great to have a big, strong guy like him to go against in the preseason and in practice. Going against each other is only going to help us going into the season,” McCauley said.

“He’s a very physical guy and he can jump out of the gym, too. He plays strong under the hoop, which is good because in the ACC you have to be a strong player.”

Costner chose to pick at the freshman instead.

“J.J. tries very hard but he’s still a young guy – it’s going to take him awhile to really be able to stay with me on the offensive end. But he’ll eventually get there,” Costner said jokingly. He then got a little more serious, adding “The sky’s the limit for J.J. He can really go as far as he wants to take himself.”

Hickson said he plans on offsetting his offensive game on the low block with a 15-foot jump shot and running the floor for transition points.

Another freshman, forward Tracy Smith, has gotten a good look at Hickson’s strengths on the court, as the two often plays alongside each other during team scrimmages.

“J.J., he’s just a straight post player … He’s a monster,” Smith said. “He can score, he can get to the basket, he can rebound, block shots - he’s very athletic. And he’ll dunk on you.”

Hickson’s size and renown for blocking shots and rebounding conjures images of former forward Cedric Simmons, now a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“He’s a lot heavier than Ced, Ced was more of a wiry type and his offensive game is a little more fluid than Ced’s,” Costner said.

Costner redshirted during Simmons’ last season in Raleigh

“Other than that ,though, they’re pretty similar. They’re both shot blockers they both rebound very well, and they both can score the ball on the low block.”

There’s talk that instead of subbing out McCauley or Costner, that Hickson could be on the court along with the other two and provide one of the tallest lineups in the nation.

“That would be a big frontline. We’re a big team this year,” Hickson said. “We were a big team last year too, we just didn’t have the depth.”

Depth doesn’t look as though it will be a problem this year, and Hickson is a large reason why. Hickson and other new additions should ease the load of minutes played on players like McCauley and Costner, who each averaged over 34 minutes per game.

Hickson is still in the process of feeling out where he fits in with his new teammates – something he thought is going well.

“I feel like I’m adjusting well with the atmosphere of the players,” Hickson said. “It’s more of a family atmosphere. I love it. It’s beautiful.”

His teammates are confident, not only that this “athletic freak” will fit in with them on the court, but will live up to expectations.

“He’s going to fit in good,” junior Courtney Fells said. “He’s going to surprise a lot of people. People know he’s good, but they’re going to find out how good he really is.”"

oh shit!

Apparently Lowe has said that we're pretty close to landing two top 25 recruits for 09. Anyone caught wind of who they might be? Wall and Hamilton are the only 5* recruits listed on our Scout page, but I've heard we've been going after others as well. Rumors anyone?

N&O article.

Quote :
"RALEIGH - N.C. State's Gavin Grant is talking big, talking national championship.
Yes, again.

In an interview this summer with ESPN.com, the senior forward said he didn't see the Pack losing more than four games this season. The Wolfpack, he said, would have enough talent to possibly be a Final Four team.

Grant is loquacious. Also a bit unpredictable. But Friday, as NCSU held its basketball Media Day, he did not back off.

Asked how far the Pack could go this season if there were no significant injuries and things fell into place, Grant said, "I think we can go as far as the national championship."

The reasons for such a prediction, he said, sat all around him Friday at the Dail Basketball Center. There were the returning starters -- Brandon Costner, Ben McCauley, Courtney Fells. There was sophomore Dennis Horner, a valuable sixth man last season. There were the freshmen -- J.J. Hickson, Tracy Smith, Javier Gonzalez.

There's Farnold Degand, a former transfer from Iowa State who should be the starting point guard, and guard Marques Johnson, a transfer from Tennessee.

And, of course, there's Grant. He has 48 career starts and offers much versatility.

"I think this team is more than capable of winning games -- fast games, slow games," Grant said. "We can execute, we can [fast] break. We can play defense, we can block shots now with J.J. [Hickson]. Our guards are a lot bigger than other teams' guards. We should be able to post (up) our guards, post our big men.

"Ben passing the way he does, Brandon shooting ... I think we have all the pieces to win a national championship if we do what we're supposed to do."

NCSU coach Sidney Lowe did win a national title with the Pack in 1983. He did not wear his NCAA championship ring last year, in his first season as State's coach -- but he has it on now.

"I think it's time," he said.

There also are two new additions in the lobby of the Dail Center -- large photos of State's 1974 and 1983 championship teams. The two NCAA trophies are displayed in cases above the practice court, a constant reminder of the Pack's past.

So while Lowe smiled when told of Grant's comments, he does not object very much.

"You want guys to dream," Lowe said, echoing his former coach, the late Jim Valvano.

McCauley comes across as more of a realist. The 6-foot-10 junior believes in the value of hard work and attention to detail.

McCauley liked what Grant had to say. He approved of how high his teammate set the bar.

"Why not?" McCauley said. "Really. If we believe we can do it, why not? There's no one stopping us but us."

The Pack was 20-16 last year and 5-11 in the ACC. It was a team with little depth, at times relying on just six players.

"We went to a dinner [Thursday] as a team on a shuttle bus to the RBC Center and the seats were full," McCauley said. "Last year you'd see an empty seat here, an empty seat there, one guy sitting in a row. It's kind of cool to see the firepower we have."

Lowe thinks it's pretty cool, too. But he also has had a constant message for his team.

To wit: "We still have to go out and play. A lot of people didn't think we could do too much last year and you proved some folks wrong. And you'll probably have to do it again. ...

"As I told our players, we really haven't done anything, in the big picture." Lowe said. "The same thing for myself; I haven't done anything in the big picture. ... We have a lot of work to do."

NOTE: Freshman guard Javier Gonzalez, who had surgery Sept. 22 for ligament damage in his right thumb, said he might return to practice the first week of November.

NC State Media Day

By Jeff Gravley

Posted: Oct. 12, 2007

The ring is back on Sidney Lowe's right hand. It's the National Championship ring that Lowe earned as the Pack's point guard in 1983. He didn't wear it last year and people kept asking why. "Now it's time, " said NC State's second year coach.

The Wolfpack was one win away from an ACC championship ring last year....highly unexpected but things are different going into this season. NC State has gone from hoping to have a good season to expecting to. As long as they find a point guard, the Pack should be in the upper echelon of the ACC.

Sidney Lowe said right now he plans to have an 8-10 man rotation. "But I don't determine that. They do." The Pack's depth will especially be felt in the post. "I like our bigs," said Lowe. No longer will Ben McCauley have to beat and bang himself to a pulp and wear down at the end of games.

Brandon Costner can lend a hand. So can freshmen Tracy Smith and JJ Hickson. Lowe said one of the things that has stood out about Hickson since he arrived on campus is his work ethic. State has had NCAA allowed workouts at 3:30 in the afternoon. That was Hickson's second workout of the day. He had already been in the gym at 6 that morning. "Coach gave me a key," Hickson quipped.

Gavin Grant thinks this will be the best State team he's been a part of. So much so that the senior told Hickson he doesn't want to lose any more than 4 games this year. That's just what Pack fans would love to experience. This is a Sweet 16 team as long as they work as hard as they did a year ago.

Best teams of all time discussion.

1973/1974 NC State (lost only one game in two years)
1982 North Carolina (Perkins, Worthy, Doherty, Jimmy Black, and a guy known as Mike Jordan until a late jumper that turned him into Michael Jordan)
1999 Duke
1999 UCONN
2005 UNC
2005 Illinois
1983 Houston
2001 Duke
2006/2007 Florida (nowhere near the most talented, but quite possibly the best "team" ever that knew when to clock in and get to work)
1991/1992 Duke
1990/1991 UNLV
1982/1984/1985 Georgetown (3 Final Fours in 4 years with all resulting in them getting to the National Championship game, and winning it once in 1984, wow is all that can be said)
1996/1997/1998 Kentucky (nearly won three championships in a row, a feat that has only been done by John Wooden's teams)
1960 tOSU (John Havilcek and Jerry Lucas nuff said)
1968 UCLA (Besides Alcindor, they had Lucius Allen, Mike Warren, Jr., Lynn Shackleford, and Mike Lynn that also averaged in double figures for the season)
1972 UCLA (The Walton Gang swept through the regular season without a challenge, winning by an average margin of 32 points per game. Besides Walton, the young team also featured future first-round draft picks Keith Wilkes and Swen Nater, and Henry Bibby)
1976 Indiana Hoosiers (the last team to go undefeated and win it all)
1957 UNC
1957 Kansas
1955/1956 San Francisco
1945/1946 Oklahoma State (formerly Oklahoma A&M)

There are definitely some others that could be in the discussion, but these are just a few to start it off.

In 40 minutes of up tempo basketball, there was not one turnover, not one. The only turnovers of the game came in overtime and turned out to be critical. There was such offensive excellence, the losing team shot 62 percent."

"Best teams of all time discussion.

2007 Tennessee Volunteers

There are definitely some others that could be in the discussion, but these are just a few to start it off."

Raleigh, N.C. – NC State was in a unique situation last season, having three players on the squad that could practice but were not allowed to play due to NCAA transfer rules. Over the next few weeks, GoPack.com will catch up with all three players and give the Wolfpack fans a chance to get to know each one a bit more before the 2007-08 regular season starts.

This week’s player is sophomore guard Marques Johnson. Johnson had his eye on NC State during the recruiting period coming out of high school, but decided to go and play at Tennessee instead. After playing in four games during the fall semester last season, Johnson decided he needed a changed and reconsidered NC State.

Johnson enrolled at NC State for the spring semester, as was able to practice with the Pack the second half of last season. Now Johnson will be one of the players asked to fill the void in the backcourt by the graduation of four-year starter at the point, Engin Atsür. He will have to miss the fall semester games, but will be able to suit up in mid-December.

GoPack: Why did you leave Tennessee last season?
Johnson: Tennessee really just was not the right fit for me. NC State opened up a lot of opportunities for me, and I thought this is the place where I should be playing.

GoPack: You were recruited by NC State out of high school right?
Johnson: When I was coming out of high school, NC State at that time was in my final four at the end of recruiting. I really liked the program back then, and obviously I like it now.

GoPack: What was different about NC State this time around?
Johnson: I would say mostly the opportunity to play right now. I’ve always had a bond with Coach (Larry) Harris and seeing the opportunity at my position right now was a big part of it.

GoPack: Was it hard to leave Tennessee after one semester?
Johnson: It was a hard choice to leave. I made a lot of friends down there, and it was hard to leave all those new relationships I made.

GoPack: What did you work on the most over the summer?
Johnson: I would say really my all-around game, but in particular my shooting.

GoPack: What is your role on this team?
Johnson: Right now I think my style is a good fit. I’ll be playing pretty much both at point and shooting guard. There is a chance to get playing time this season, but I’ll just play wherever the coaches need me to that particular game.

GoPack: What do you prefer to play?
Johnson: I’d probably rather be out there as the point guard.

GoPack: Do you think of it as a positive that you are at NC State now?
Johnson: Getting to know all the guys and the coaching staff for this season, I couldn’t be in a better situation. I really feel myself growing as a player, and I’m just excited to get out on the court.
