Now i'm having trouble with Vista media center and network shares. It'll freeze for a few minutes before opening a network folder almost every time. I've read i need to set up the network folders through WMP and not VMC.

-So vista has big issues with indexing Thumbnails on network shares. Is there a way to turn off thumbnails or fix this issue? I've been searching but haven't found anything yet.

IE appears to be broken on my Vista. I'm using Vista Ultimate 64, and try using IE64, regular IE, and IE w/o addons, and microsoft.com still displays incorrectly along with several other microsoft-owned websites.

I don't normally use IE, but it would be nice if it worked.

So I installed Vista a month or so ago. Figured I'd give it a shot again now that SP1 has been out a while and most of the kinks have been worked out. It is indeed better. It's almost as good as XP (but not quite) Either way, it's now usable as an OS, which is not something that it was before. But it's still the little things that drive me batshit crazy.

Small example: Why in the name of Zeus' butthole will the windows settings not stay the way you set them? I want all my files to display in alphabetical order with the folders at the top, and the files at the bottom in detail view. Shouldn't be too hard, right? So just set the view to details and click the Name tab to sort things alphabetically. No problem, right? Yeah. That lasts until you copy or move one file to the folder. Rather than place the file in the correct order it just assumes that you wanted to put the file out of alphabetic order so there goes the setting. From that point on, there is no special order for the files and folders at all. They stay that way until you manually tell windows how you want the files to be sorted. Which means that for popular folders that I want to KEEP the files sorted alphabetically, I have to sort them 3-4 times a day or more. Which isn't hard...but why can't it just remember that I want them to be alphabetic by name and be done with it. No other version of windows ever acted this way. Yeah, lets change things just because we can. Fuck Microsoft.

^^ just a note about that, when you change the folder options, there's a bit of a difference from XP.

in vista, when you apply the view to "all folders", it applies those view settings to those folders of the same "type"... i.e. if it's a picture folder, video folder, etc.

in XP, when you apply the view to "all folders", it applies that view setting to all folders.

Disabled Indexing = huge performance boost
(also disabled System Restore for HD space, didn't need b/c of Lenovo Rescue + Recovery)

Anyone else got that 1GB Intel Turbo Memory? I'm running 3 GB plus the turbo memory. Performance is fantastic, just wondering if it would be the same without the turbo installed. What effect does it really have?

^^You're giving me advice on how to run when I can't even stand up. Sure, getting all my folders to look the way I want them would be great, but I can't figure out how to get just one of them to stay that way.

Maybe I'm just not explaining my problem correctly. Or maybe you aren't understanding it properly.

Either way, this didn't help me one bit. Yeah sure that makes all my folders sort the way I want them to be sorted. I did that long ago. The problem is the first time I drag a file into one of those folders, the sorting goes away. Vista refuses to remember the way I want the folders to stay sorted.

^I just never really liked windows explorer. I've used total commander since windows 3.1. Still supports it too! I like the double panel interface, makes it much easier to move things around.

None of that's working. I've added that key to my registry and set it to 20,000, it still won't remember to alphabetize my files after I drag a new one to the folder. I give up. I've just come to expect that if I'm going to be a Vista user there are going to be piles of shit I'm going to have to wade through. I just consider this to be one more.

Deleted, rebooted, changed, rebooted and it's still doing the same thing.

I'm not sure that we're even attempting to solve the same problem here. Vista will remember my folder settings for individual folders just fine. Probably until the end of time, as long as I don't copy any files to them. Are you telling me that with your copy of Vista you can switch to Details view, sort the folder alphabetically by name, and then open up another folder and drag a file to the first folder and it automatically sorts the file into its correct location?

I've had my FIRST Vista crash, yesterday.

It happened after Left 4 Dead, and I did kinda jerk up the AA to 8X. I never have had this happen before to any other application.

Did it blue screen and tell you it couldn't reset the video display adapter? Mines done that and i think it's more of a video card issue, and the result of over-heating or cranking up the AA too high.

Neodata686, it gave me a blue screen and a bunch of numbers. I didn't see anything about a video adapter problem.

Yeah a friend of mine actually had the same thing happen in L4D, I think it's a common problem more to blame on the game/video adapter than Vista per se.

I've never had a bluescreen playing L4D but I have had the screen freeze and the audio gets caught in a 1/4 second loop forever, but I can still bring up task manager and kill it that way.

Also I'd recommend playing with '-novid -windowed -noborder' for instant alt-tab response.

Right back to Vista issues now......

I bought one of those black Friday 1.5TB Seagate drives. I'm waiting on a power adapter to come in so I can hook it up. I've got a couple of questions I can't seem to find a good answer to:

1) I will have 3 hard drives in my computer. I have two 250GB SATA drives that are in the RAID configuration that combines the drives into one giant 500GB one (and partitioned into 80GB for the OS and the remainder as a data drive). Will adding in another SATA drive mess up the RAID configuration, or is the computer smart enough to know which two of the three hard drives are combined together?

2) After I get the new hard drive installed, I've read that it's good to have a dedicated partition for the Vista swap file to cut down on fragmentation. How big should I make the partition (I only have 2GB of memory), and do I need to format the swap partition as a regular drive (so it will show up as D: or E:, etc?)?

1.) i'm guessing on this, because i don't know for sure and it probably depends on your RAID configuration utility, but...i would think that, since the drive won't even be recognized by the OS until it's initialized, and since RAID is pretty smart, it could operate independently...i could be very wrong on this, though

2.) i am a huge proponent of this...1.5x physical memory is a generally good rule of thumb, but as your physical goes up, it doesn't need to be as large, since it likely won't be used as often or to its full potential...with 2gb physical, i'd create a 2gb partition...though these days, i'd always suggest 4gb RAM (if you're running x64) since it's dirt cheap (keep the 2gb page file partition, though)

I would think a 10000rpm raptor would score better than that. It just seems weird because my HDD score is 5.6 and it is only a 150GB 7200rpm SATA drive. When was the last time you wipped that drive clean?

My raptor gets a 5.9 (highest) on vista. The only thing not 5.9 is the CPU (5.7) because it's only a dual core.

This is a fresh install of vista x64. I always wipe the drive every couple of months since it usually only holds my OS.

5.3 seemed low to me as well. My E6400 is a 5.7 @ 3.03GHz. Everything else is 5.9 and then of course the HDD.

thx2u for the response. I went ahead and added in the HDD and hooked it up to one of the remaining SATA ports. It turns out that the RAID has a special set of SATA ports, so I felt comfortable hooking it up.

Vista64 picked up the 1.5TB HDD and installed the driver but it only recognizes it as a 465GB drive

vista keeps deciding that i don't have permission to save files where i want. every time i want to save something somewhere other than the default location, i have to go to that directory and give read/write permissions to all users (even if i've already done that)
