^^If you install one of the GMail Notifiers, they typically have an option to change the mailto links to automatically go to GMail. I can't recommend one in particular now since I'm currently computer-less (Unrelated but fuck PC laptop makers for not using Magsafe type connectors for people who walk around in the dark) but I think Gmail Notifier Plus is what I used to use? It's something like that.

*Warning- Im about as untech knowledgeable as it gets*

So i know ive seen a few TWWers talk about using google chrome and liking it. I currently have windows 2000 and use firefox and am pretty happy with it, don't have any problems. I was thinking about switching to chrome. I've looked at some tutorials trying to find what features it had that made it any different from FF and if it had something great about it that would make make browsing easier or whatever.

I've read several pages from this thread and I have some questions about what seems to me like reoccurring comments.
- It seems like the speed seems to be the main draw but I dont really think FF is slow, does it make that much of a difference?
- I've also seen several people mention using a add-blocker with chrome, would I need to download that and why?
- Several people have mentioned probelms with flash not working, browser crashing, or some other quirk. Is this true for most people?
- Anyone else had problems with the print preview or fit when printing?
- Is there any other real advantage, widget, setup, something that makes it better other then the speed?

Last but not least, is it worth me switching if I'm happy with FF

i was pretty happy with firefox for a long time too. but after using chrome for a few weeks and then trying firefox again, i definitely noticed the difference.

you don't NEED adblock, but if you want it just go to http://chromeadblock.com and click the install button

i've had chrome crash on me a few times, (usually flash related) but overall it's probably less frequent than when firefox would crash

i don't use print so can't help ya there

other than that - just personal taste. i saw make yourself use it for a week, and if you don't like it after that much time, go back to FF

If you're happy with FF stay with it, the only difference is speed, all the other extensions are ported to each other.

The couple things I can think of is that Chrome will sync your themes, bookmarks, settings across computers if you sign-in to the browser (one-time) at each location. There's also Google app integration with Chrome, so you can create an application shortcut on your desktop for Gmail, Gdocs, etc. Each tab opens an individual process (speed increase and stability), can pin tabs, etc.

What Chrome doesn't have:
"In no particular order: there is no tab overflow handling, no tagging or smart bookmarks handling, no download resume between sessions, no multiple dictionary support, no toolbar customization beyond hiding the Home button and the bookmarks toolbar, the bookmarks toolbar is only accessible via Ctrl + B, no kind of web feeds support, no native video/audio support, no discontinuous selection option, no page printing options, etc."

Adblock is available for both as an extension.

So I want to like chrome and html5 is really awesome, atleast in something like this:

http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com/

Use chrome and don't mess with the windows. It does its own thing. Pretty awesome.

BUT there's a few things I just can't stand that make it unusable compared to FF in my opinion.

For example on my Macbook Pro all the finger gestures don't work like they do in FF. No 3 finger top of page/bottom of page. Not a huge deal but I use it enough where it's annoying not having it.

My BIGGEST complaint about Chrome is how slow it is compared to FF. For example I tested this out last night. I loaded up engadget.com in both FF and Chrome and it took almost 4 seconds longer to get to a certain part of the page in Chrome than in FF. Here's why:

I load up engadget.com in FF and I can immediately start scrolling down the page even though the page is not fully loaded yet. I've got 10mbit TWC so it doesn't load too slow. Loading has little or no effect on scrolling in FF.

In chrome I load up engadget.com and I can't scroll until the page is mostly loaded. So i'm stuck at the top of the page for atleast 3-4 seconds before I can start scrolling to where I want. This is EXTREMELY annoying and makes chrome slow IMHO. This issue gets even worse when I try to open multiple tabs and have to wait for most of the tabs to load before I can start scrolling or get smooth scrolling.

I've noticed this problem on a multitude of computers and maybe it's just me but I want to start scrolling down a page before it's completely loaded. Until they fix this I don't think i'll be using chrome unless it's for Arcade Fire music videos.

^yea, i've noticed that too, mostly with pages that have content loading from other domains though, typically ads, videos and such. other than that though Chrome is typically faster.

Yeah I have ad block on both but when most of what i'm reading is blogs, news sites, sites with lots of photos/content it becomes a big problem. If I want to scroll halfway down the page it takes that much longer on Chrome to get there because I have to wait for it to finish loading. So that makes Chrome that much slower. Other than that I don't really notice Chrome being THAT much faster than FF.

I do like how chrome utilizes less space on my screen (only really matters on my low-res laptop). Like the whole menu bar/bookmarks are maybe 10-15 pixels shorter, and the status bar at the bottom only shows up when it's loading. FF has it there all the time. I haven't really messed with many GUI plug-ins. I guess all that can be changed.

Anyone know how to get the short cut so when I right click on a link I can just press t to have it open in a new tab?

It used to do it but after an update that shortcut is gone and I use it all the time on my laptop.

Thanks

Wait what? All the finger gestures work fine in FF on any computer. They don't work on any computer on Chrome independent of the OS. In fact most laptops don't even support 3 finger scrolling. How is using OSX an issue?

All the problems appear on both my Windows 7 and OSX machines.

Because multi-finger gestures are not fully implemented yet, here's your feature request:

ctrl+click = open in new tab in background
ctrl+shift+click = open in new tab in foreground

Yeah I saw that. I'm just saying It's not as usable until they are. But the biggest issue for me is how slow Chrome is when it's loading tabs. Makes it not usable in my opinion. I mentioned the problem earlier up the page. It severely handicaps Chrome.

Speaking of, I still can't find a suitable replacement for the awesome screen this thing has.

You're probably just not noticing it. It's a well documented issue with the rendering and loading. Firefox pages are ready and scrollable even when loading but in Chrome typically the page has to mostly load before you have fluid scrolling.

This probably isn't an issue for most people but I browse fast and compared to FF Chrome is too slow. I've noticed this on a multitude of computers whether they're Windows or OSX.

I'll check it out.

My old Dell 9100 from 2004 with a Pentium 4 3.2ghz at 15.4" 1920 by 1200 with Windows 7 and Chrome still has the slow scrolling/loading issue I'm speaking about. The only reason I pulled it out was to add another computer to the long list of computers that show the issue. It's just a Chrome issue.

I'm glad it works for you guys but when I load a page I want immediate scrolling even before the page is loaded. Having to wait until the page is loaded makes it horribly slow.

I can't find a page that takes more than a second or two to load provided my internet is functioning properly. This is on a couple years old laptop with Windows 7 (designed for Vista, so a couple drivers are still wonky) 2.2 GHz AMD something or another, a weak ass graphics chip, 3 GB RAM with 3 GB readyboosting and optimally configured settings.

If it's a well documented issue, for whatever reason i've never experienced it. Chrome has always been quicker than any other browser for me. Always.

^^if your pages are loading almost instantly than you're not going to really experience the problem. Even on my 100mbit down connection at work pages take more than 2 seconds to load. Sites like Engadget which are heavy on videos/flash might take up to 3-4 seconds to load. If I want to scroll down to a certain point I can get there while it's loading in FF but in Chrome I typically have to wait for it to load to have fluid responsive scrolling.

One solution, for Stable builds and the derivatives SRWare Iron and Flock 3: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/cdngiadmnkhgemkimkhiilgffbjijcie

better solution, for Beta builds or even less-stable ones, basically for Chrome 7 but first added to a slightly later build of Chrome 6: http://techdows.com/2010/08/google-chromes-click-to-play-advanced-plug-in-blocking-feature.html
in essence, block all plugins in your options, and then add "--enable-click-to-play" to the shortcut that launches Chrome, and then whenever plugin content is about to load just click and then it will load when you want it to and won't slow you down if you don't want it

The point is that you load only the plugins you want to load and only when you want to load them; I've found it keeps my system from bogging down when I load up a bunch of YouTube tabs.

Depending on which solution you use, you will find either a grey "Flash" logo that turns into a "Play" button that can be clicked to start the plugin, or you will find a puzzle piece like this

that you can click to let the plugin load.

I'm guessing you already realized that F11 enters full screen, so now you just need the below extension since Google is claiming "WontFix" http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=8022 on actually implementing an address bar in full screen.

Fullscreen address bar
https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ppmkmdianhgppfjciekeiodmgdppglno

It works pretty well, slightly buggy sometimes but it still gets the job done. I give it slack because it's barely a month old and I'm just thankful to finally have something.

with all the kewl new features in Labs, I only use 4 command-line switches for Chrome 9: --purge-memory-button --enable-extension-timeline-api --enable-video-layering --enable-fastback

and I also enable all flags except "disable hyperlink auditing" and I make sure that click-to-play is on and Instant is off

Background apps will continue to run until Chrome exits. The next time Chrome starts up, any background windows that were previously running will also be re-launched. These windows are not going to be visible but they will be able to perform tasks like checking for server-side changes and pre-emptively loading content into local storage," explains Google.

woah. if this enables an easily-pluggable framework for push notifications, this is pretty cool. I'd love to get gmail, gchat, twitter, facebook notifications on my desktop without having to keep my browser open
