I still can't install this shit, but I think I'm getting closer. I think there's a problem with my board and 4GB of RAM. http://windows7forums.com/windows-7-installation-upgrade/1388-windows-7-slow-install-wont-boot-2.html
The guy has the same exact board that I do and he's having the exact same problem. he took 2 GB out and it works great. I upped the voltage on the RAM to try to resolve performance problems on the suggestion from OCZ, but I threw the Windows 7 disk in last night and it still fucking wouldn't install. I'll take 2 sticks out and try it though I'd really like to use the RAM I purchased. 2/12/2009 1:43:01 PM |

I've had a lot less compatibility issues in win 7 32bit for some reason. i keep getting installers that crash in 64bit so i've went back to 32bit on the machines i have it on 2/13/2009 8:21:14 AM |

So far, I've only had a handful of issues installing:
chrome - had to change the path to the shortcut. lightscribe - had to hex edit the msi to look for VersionNT=601 logitech setpoint - had to hunt down 64 bit version
WoW installed without a hitch and is fucking fast. NVidia drivers installed without problem, though they are missing some functionality from the XP drivers. AVG installed without issue. 2/13/2009 11:01:23 AM |

Probably not gonna be too much help to you, but I got mine working just fine. Both on 32-bit and the 64-bit.
You trying to use an xbox 360 as the extender? For some reason I have never been able to get it to work (xp or vista) if the 360 was using a wireless connection. I don't know your setup though.2/13/2009 1:16:48 PM |

that it should be given out as a real upgrade to vista, but won't.
i like it if not for all the bugs. i like it a lot more than vista 64, but i'll stick with 64 bit vista since mine is legal and i don't feel like shelling out $2-300 on a new OS.2/13/2009 4:47:06 PM |

couple of things to keep in mind as far as "footprint" goes.
The Win7 beta is the "ultimate" SKU. This means that the Volume Shadow Service is installed, and on by default.
VSS is one of the most unheard of features in Vista, mostly because it ain't in the home SKU's, which is what most people have.
In a nutshell, right click on a file or folder, look at the "Previous Versions" tab, and you can open, view, copy or restore previous versions of the file/folder. It's REALLY cool stuff. Very similar to "Time Machine" on OSX, except VSS came first, and it works invisibly 2/13/2009 10:07:24 PM |

a couple of other interesting bits, for the server guys:
Win7 supports native booting from vhd. So if you happen to have a hyper-v server, you can use it to deploy win7 images to physical machines. Makes a lot of deployment and multi-boot scenarios much easier, because you dont have to worry about physical disk partitioning anymore.
And, along those lines, you can symlink external, network and physical drives (this may have been possible previously, but I heard it specifically mentioned for Win7), which makes VHD deployment even more powerful (symlink to a profile space, save VHD, redeploy images when needed, without upsetting the profile). 2/14/2009 3:02:07 AM |

Also Windows Media Center isn't working on my desktop and I've exhausted every possibility. It works fine on my laptop though.

^^ I would highly advise *against* downloading builds after 7000, unless you are getting them directly from Microsoft as a partner.
Build 7000 is fully supported. You can get windows updates for any security or feature functionality that is needed to be fixed. Once you install a build beyond that, there is no guarantee that anything will work. That's fine if you are just running a VM to screw around on, but like many of you guys, I am running Win7 as a regular OS and I'll be sticking with build7000 until another public release hits. That should, hopefully, tell you something.
^ Why in the hell did you CRACK a beta of Windows 7? There's a very very good chance you have malware built in on boot, and it could easily be the cause of your WMC problems. Even on the torrents you can find the original, unaltered ISO's for the 7000 beta. 2/16/2009 6:04:43 PM |
jchill2 All American 2683 Posts user info edit post |
I didn't mean cracked, really. MCE didn't work on the desktop but it worked on the laptop, so I know that the copy wasn't at fault.
Just did a clean install and MCE works, but WoW won't let itself patch 2/16/2009 11:26:20 PM |

http://lifehacker.com/5154968/windows-7-seemingly-blocks-audio-capture Windows 7 Seemingly Blocks Audio Capture [Drm] by Kevin Purdy One rather feisty (and—surprise!—Linux-savvy) Slashdot reader writes about his DRM discoveries in Windows 7. Along with complaints about seemingly big-software-friendly firewall access and registration DLLs, the author's chief discovery is that Windows 7 doesn't allow for any kind of software audio capture. In other words, if you've got one application playing sound, Windows 7 doesn't seem to allow you to use your same sound card to also grab the audio from that app.
Windows 7 testers, are you seeing similar findings? I don't trust my ThinkPad's built-in sound to be a reliable testing rig, so let us know if you're also blocked from in-system recording in the comments.

Quote : | "Just read the comments on slashdot. The article was crap, written by an unprofessional alarmist. It's been thoroughly dissected and proven to be nothing more than some guy who doesn't like microsoft and just wants to make things up to make them look bad.
To sum up some of the more logical points of rebuttal. His main argument was for DRM in the OS disturbing his CS4 installation. But he was using a hacked DLL to remove the annoy dialog. Which anyone with half a brain would think that this would be causing him way more problems than windows.
He tries to look at the Local Settings for Windows. Except he was looking for that location that's the normal spot for XP. Which got moved to somewhere else in Vista and 7. There are junctions(akin to hard links in unix-alike os's) in those places for backwards compatibility for older systems. Trying to analyze them is like trying to analyze a city by looking at the road sign from 50 miles outside the city. There's nothing really there just a pointer to the real thing.
And then there is the sound issue he spoke of. The sound system is one of the things that hasn't changed much in 7. He's obviously using either a crap sound card or beta drivers(which would be a duh considering 7 itself is still in beta). "Stereo Mix" is up to the driver maker to make available, not microsoft or 7. So it's just not available to his drivers, nothing to blame anyone about just yet." |

Did it ever work? It sounds like one of three possible issues:
1) If you updated XP after installing Win7 (SP3 perhaps?) it generally hoses the bootloader for other installed OSs. This is one super shitty thing about XP, and historically with MS OSs in general. I believe it's finally been fixed in Win7 (fingers crossed on that one).
If that's the case, you are likely going to have to format the win7 partition and reinstall it, OR boot to the recovery console from the Win7 disk and try to do a chkdsk / fixboot / fixmbr.
2) It's possible you have corrupted the bootloader from a botched install of Win7. This is only really possible if you've never been able to boot into Win7 at all. Format and reinstall.
3) You have a bootsector virus. The least likely, but if all else fails, find a LiveCD antivirus that can scan for this. Made much more likely if you have no antivirus on either OS, or you do any illicit downloading that may leave you open for viruses.
distant 4th) You may need a BIOS update. Extremely unlikely, unless this is super old hardware that you just haven't touched in a few years.
Hope that helps. It *is* a beta, so format/reinstall is a pretty good bet for most situations.2/20/2009 2:39:40 PM |

It's definitely not here. My Windows 7 drive (which is C: in Win 7) shows up in XP, but my XP drive which is C: in XP does not show up in Win 7.
edit: never mind, I think it's because before I installed 7, I partitioned one of my HDs as some arbitrary drive letter in XP, but Win7 is not recognizing the XP drive because it's already C:. Carry on :/
edit2: I'm so retarded, I didn't think to just run diskmgmt.msc and assign the XP drive to another letter. Carry on again.

Tyler, I had SP3 installed prior to installing Windows 7. I keep it up to date automatically. The OS installed and ran a few times with no issue. I have AV on both, Defender and Vexira, and have run full scans with Malwarebytes, Defender, Vexira, & Spybot to check and see if that was the problem. Hence why I'm a bit confused by this. 2/22/2009 8:25:09 PM |
