Quote : | "Motorola DROID closes in on its one-million-sold target? by Marc Flores on November 30th, 2009 at 5:09pm Filed under: Android, Motorola, News, Retail, Verizon 221 Comments
It comes as no surprise to us that the Motorola DROID has been seeing some really successful sales numbers since its release. As a matter of fact, it is getting mighty close to its target of finding one million hands by the end of the fourth quarter. Actual sales figures are reported to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 700,000 to 800,000 devices sold, which is nearing Verizon and Motorola’s goal and already well over analyst predictions. If Verizon sees a big holiday push, that number can easily crawl over the one million mark. It doesn’t hurt to have a $100 million ad campaign — it’s definitely paying off, but what we want to know is how many of you contributed to those sales numbers and if you’re happy with your decision so far. Share your experience in the comments!" |

Quote : | "The Google Phone is Real And Coming Early Next Year ? Posted on Wednesday, Nov 18, 2009 by Casey Chan
Here we go again. There's whispers going around that the device we've all been waiting for, since even before the existence of Android really, is coming early next year. Yep, the Google Phone, as in the hardware and design and all the little and final decisions that goes into building a phone is made by Google. According to the report, Google will sell the phone directly and through retailers, the Google phone was supposed to come this Holiday season but has been pushed back to early next year, and the phone will be produced by a major phone manufacturer but only carry Google branding.
Basically, it's purported to be Google's vision of what a phone should be and how it should fit with Android. Almost sounds too good to be true. The Google Phone will likely be produced by either LG or Samsung (more likely LG) and there'll be a huge ad push for it.
In theory, it all sounds great. Google gets to deliver a handset that is directly tied to the Android experience, kind of how Apple is the sole provider of the iPhone experience. The problem is, Google for all its talents and genius, has yet to ever prove it can handle hardware (or even design). It's a company filled first and foremost with engineers, albeit engineers with great talents and ideas, but engineers nonetheless. This is the company that leaves its product in Beta for years upon years! Why bother investing in a hardware device that HTC, Motorola, Samsung, LG, etc have proven well capable already? Hardware has never been Google's M.O.
And if Google does so happen build a wonderful Google Phone, it'll likely alienate its hardware partners. Why would I buy a Motorola DROID or Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 if I can get an official Google Phone built from the ground up for Android? How will companies feel if the Google Phone launches with 3.0 but every other Android device is stuck at 2.0? Will they continue to make Android devices? Google would be leaving the companies that backed Android from the beginning in the dust. Simply put, the existence of a Google Phone automatically makes third-party Android phones second-tier devices because Google's priority will shift to the Google Phone, all others second.
There's definitely a lot more questions, both good and bad, regarding the Google Phone but if it is true, Android is going to take off. Again. It's going to be an exciting year.
What do you guys think?" |
Quote : | "The Google Phone Is A Certainty Posted on Tuesday, Dec 1, 2009 by Casey Chan
It looks like that Google Phone that was real and coming early next year has now become a certainty. According to Gizmodo, a trusted source has tipped them off that is adding even more intrigue to the perpetual Google Phone rumor and of course, brings more questions. The Google Phone will differ from your run-of-the-mill Android Handsets (which even the DROID will be grouped with) because it runs a different version of Android that has yet to be seen on Google-branded hardware.
Prototypes of the Google Phone is expected to hit Google's Headquarters in the next few weeks. The prototypes will run the new version of Android, Flan or maybe even a version beyond that. And the juiciest tidbit of all? That the Android we know and love may not be the 'real' Android. We're assuming that means the 'real' Android will be available on the Google Phone.
Google Voice and Android sitting in a tree? What do you guys think?" |

Well, that's me not fully reading articles, and having no idea which devices it'd work on. And how much trouble it would be to hack it on to make it work on other devices. If you got time on your hands, go for it.
But that said, most anyone is going to be better served with Android 2.x. The OS has received enough updates to make it worth your dollar. 12/1/2009 9:36:44 PM |

As far as I know it's ok to go on all of 'em. One other thing to consider is how long it's going to take your carrier to update the device you buy to a newer version of the OS, assuming that they need to be involved. There's probably a reason why the Droid Eris didn't get 2.0 out of the gate... 12/1/2009 9:40:26 PM |

^^Eris didn't get 2 right out of the gate because of HTC's Sense UI didn't work with Android 2.0
^Wait to see if that update is true. When they first announced that update (a month or so ago) they made it sound like it was going to be minor things, not a major update like that. Although pics have been floating around with an HTC Hero (Eris' twin brother) running 2.1 so it is possible I guess.
I had an Eris and really liked it accept for the fact the UI was really sluggish. I couldn't tell if that was the hardware or Android 1.5 being meh. 12/1/2009 10:56:10 PM |

Any phone that can be rooted can have navi, regardless of what operating system you have. I had it on mine when Navi was not in the market for 1.6 and up. Once the legit version was out I just used it though. The hacked version is Nav for the 2.0 operating system so there are some bells and whistles not there when you use the legit version for 1.6+.
Sense UI is sluggish. You could overclock or get a developers modded version of it to make it faster *assuming you root*
Almost all apps have been updated for 2.0 and are backwards compatible. I have yet to run an app on my G1 and have an issue. Get ATRackdog from the market to keep up with updates. LOVE this app.
The developers have their hands on 2.1... it looks really F'ing sweet. I have yet to flash it but it sounds like they are making good strides. 12/2/2009 2:02:28 PM |

Eris is running on outdated hardware. No one knows how it will perform with a 2.x upgrade since SenseUI is such a hog. Although I really liked the Eris more when I played with both at the verizon store. SenseUI was smooth and I really liked the form factor and the trackball over the dpad. I'm gonna wait and see what else htc has to offer.

I was at a Verizon store tonight. I asked the sales rep if has any info on the HTC Passion. She has never heard of it but proceeded to look it up in her system. Low and Behold, she finds it. "HTC Passion 1Ghz coming holiday 2009". I don't think she googled it. If Verizon does have it in their system, it can't be too far away. 12/2/2009 9:23:16 PM |

It seems weird that in the system it would only say "coming holiday 2009", which is what that website claims.
I would think they would have a more definite release date in case they started receiving shipments in the back but couldn't break a street date. 12/3/2009 8:06:50 AM |

Update: Again, if you already purchased and are within 30 days of that purchase – you would be – they will honor it (so go in Friday or Saturday I guess). Need to open a new line. (If you have a second line that has expired, should be able to cancel/reopen to finagle it. That may depend on how much they like ya, though ) This is not store specific. Corporate-wide. well the fine print there says 299.99 2 yr - 100.00 mail in rebate debit card. Add'l phone: 100.00 mail in rebate debit card.
so it sounds to me like if i'm NEW, not just upgrading (my contract expires tomorrow) I can buy as many droids as I want for 199.99 (not sure if they'll give me an Eris for every Droid I buy but I won't press as long as I get one I can sell).
THANK YOU for the heads up on the sale

I believe the deal is buy a moto droid or eris, get an eris free. Which technically it isn't free at time of purchase since it looks like you have to pay 299+99 and then get $200 worth of mail in rebates.

haha, looks like verizon has pissed off the fcc now with their increased ETF http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/04/fcc-gives-verizon-the-third-degree-over-350-advanced-device-e/
Quote : | "Early termination fees have always represented the flipside of subsidized pricing -- the necessary evil that keeps free phones free. Thing is, they were tough enough to swallow at $175 or $200, but Verizon's recently gone for the jugular in a hell-bent effort to keep subscribers locked in by upping the fee on vaguely-defined "advanced devices" (read: any phone a power user would ever want) all the way up to a mind-bending $350. Turns out the FCC is as confused and worked up as everyone else, though, having fired off a 4-page communique to Verizon's veep of legal and external affairs today asking how customers are notified of the new ETF, how the prorating formula is calculated (hint: they don't like that you still pay $120 after 23 months of a 24-month contract), and how an "advanced device" comes to be, among other things. Riding on the letter are a few extra questions about inadvertent mobile web charges for customers that aren't signed up for a data plan, totaling nine paragraph-long queries that the feds want answered by December 17. Your move, Verizon." |

Quote : | "Android 2.0.1 SDK Now Available, DROID Getting OTA Update Soon Posted on Friday, Dec 4, 2009 by Casey Chan
Google just announced that they've updated the Android SDK to 2.0.1 and will update all Android 2.0 devices (just the DROID for now) to Android 2.0.1 by the end of the year. It's a minor update in both name and form and has been expected for quite some time now. The 2.0.1 update will supposedly fix bugs and other glorious things, which is always a good thing. Supposedly, the OTA update that will hit the DROID will also include DROID-specific issues such as improving the camera's autofocus (much needed) and voice reception (was it even an issue?). We'll definitely let you guys know when the update is rolling out.
Now, uh, when can we officially get Android 2.0 (or 2.0.1 or 2.1) on other Android devices?" |
