This. Spring Break last year, the NC mountains got up to a foot of snow. Easy foot at Grandfather. Sugar Mountain got about 11 inches, so we hit that up. AND since it was in early March, the March Madness discounts were in full force.

I was thinking of going to Whitetail, PA this weekend. Not sure what the conditions are going to be like because of the warm front the northeast had this week but then now its supposed to snow and be in the 20-30's. Not sure how much snow they'll get or if it will even be worth going up there.

I'm supposed to go to Snowshoe this weekend (leaving tomorrow), but I'm a little worried about driving home. My first day of work is Monday and I can't get stuck in WV.

if you have a capable vehicle you should be fine on sunday coming home. just allow the possibility of a 10 hr drive. but if you need to move across the roads and go about it sensibly you should be able to reach your destination.

best way from raleigh is take I-40W to business 40W into downtown Winston-Salem. Take US 52 North to I-74 W to I-77 North to I-64 E. From I-64 E take exit 269 (HWY 219 North). HWY 219 No takes you right past Marlington WV and straight to the entrance to Snowshoe.

directions from snowshoe's website. Last few years I've driven a different route each time, both there and back, and those are the best I've found. They're used to snow up that way so that put down salt/gravel, and plow often.

^^ That's the way I usually go, and it looks the safest since there should be better road conditions on highways.

Thing went well today though I was a bit frustrated when I would tell the one girl what to do and she would reply, "IKNOWIKNOWIKNOWIKNOW!" and not do what I was telling her

how was snowshoe over the weekend? powdery i'm sure. let's hear it from those of you who went up there.

i was at wintergreen for 7 hours or so on saturday. conditions were pretty fantastic. i was one of the first people to hit the slopes on saturday morning. i strapped right by the ticket window, went about 10 yards and sank in the powder. had to basically butter off of the back end to make it to the bottom of the green so i could move over to the blacks. the blacks were in great shape. the people that shouldn't have been on the blacks, and kept falling, created kickers everywhere from powder they pushed up. i rode the 6 person lift by myself for basically the first 3 hours. after that i was never on it with more than 3 other people.

went to blue mountain in the poconos last night

cheap lift tickets for sunday evening session

kinda LOLZ

stayed off in the "double black" areas most of the night, best snow and fewest people

although, they were less challenging than even a cup run at snowshoe.

whatever though, it's snowboarding an hour from my house, so it'll work for a hankerin'

the conditions at snowshoe were excellent. it snowed all day saturday and it was cold so it wasn't too crowded. sunday was clear and beautiful as well. road conditions were fine until we got to NC non-highway roads.

Snowshoe was fantastic this week. Started snowing early AM Saturday and snowed mostly all day (some times VERY HARD) and stopped around 3pm... Then we got an unexpected extra 3-4" from like 5pm until midnight.

They groomed everything (even Lower Shay) Friday night before the snow so there was clean powder on top of the freshly groomed runs.

I thought it was pretty busy at times on Saturday in the middle runs at Snowshoe but Western and the newer black's at the far end and Silver Creek were great.

We got really lucky with the conditions IMO...

summit county really seems to be getting the shaft. dubcaps and i went out to winterpark, steamboat, and copper. copper being right next to breck and in summit county was pretty much hardpack/ice, which is a shame too big cause the mountain had a nice setup and the trails were pretty great.

if you're looking to go somewhere that has been getting good snow, go to tahoe, jackson hole, or anywhere around SLC (park city or snowbird mainly).

All this talk about going out west depresses me. My plans got shot down by work. Now I'm left with shattered dreams and plans to head to the NC mountains for a pity ride this weekend.

i've been up about 10 times or so, it's been very dry so far this season. i'd say i'd normally be at 15-16 days by Feb. but the snow just isn't as fun when you're used to powder.

still fun, still some of the best mountains in the nation. if you look in SW Colorado they just got 8 FEET!

I wonder if Wintergreen will ever expand the ski areas or add more slopes. Seems as though they have the room to do so fairly easily. If anything they need to add another high speed lift to get people to the top rather than just the one lift that gets bottlenecked during heavy hours.

whoever said the snow base sucked in CO this year was correct. it wasnt awful, but compared to previous trips, it was embarrassing. there were definitely more than a couple runs where i ran over rocks.

beautiful weather this past weekend though, skiing in tshirts = win. would trade for some more powder though. ended up skipping vail and doing breck and beaver creek.

It looks like Snowshoe is going to get destroyed this weekend. The storm coming in tomorrow should bring in well over a foot of snow.

i'm going for the day on saturday. i went last saturday. left richmond at like 6, stopped and mcdonald's in charlottesville, and got to WG at around 830.

powder on the roads in extremely manageable. i had no problems to or from WG last weekend. also make sure you get off at exit 107 on 64. do not, i repeat, do not come down the blue ridge parkway.

I'll be coming from Raleigh. I've also got my snow/ice tires on and AWD so I hope I don't run into any issues on the way up. Glad to hear the powder on the roads was manageable last weekend.

I was thinking if i left at 5am Saturday morning I should get there by the time the slopes open and avoid any traffic congestion delays but probably experience slow speed due to the weather.
