At least I got half my prediction right (>10 point win).
On the upside, as far as I know Sidney Lowe hasn't been comparing our lack of success to the earthquake in Haiti. He may not have shaken Hewitt's hand after GT, but he is not a complete social retard and is doing a lot more with the talent he has at his disposal than Roy this year (no McDonald's All-Americans, same # of ACC wins, beat Duke). I just wish he wouldn't play Mays. If we can beat UNC Saturday all would not be even close to forgiven, but it would at least provide some success to work with for the rest of the season. If this team plays anywhere near its potential it is still capable of at least marginal success to close out the season. At least I hope so.

My post on top of page 2. Seriously this team has been absolute garbage since the Duke game. I do not know what happened, but we look like we've quit.

Some thoughts on last night's game:

1. Smith was sick and was throwing up. That is why he looked so tired.

2. Howell suffered a cut somehow shortly before the game and only played 3 minutes or so. Lowe had to play Horner and Davis.

3. Horner had good stats last night (his 1st career double double), but that had to be the least productive 14 pt / 16 rebound game in history.

4. Horner sucks so bad on defense that it is painful. His effort during the press in the 2nd half made me want to stab myself.

5. Javi looked like he did not care again last night. Mays is a trainwreck. Degand showed effort, but simply does not have the skills to finish when he pentrates.

6. Officiating was horrible, but even with the missed calls we would have lost. VT was better at everything last night. We beat them in offensive rebounds simply because we missed so many shots.

7. Outlet caddy is a dumb fucking product.

8. Wood has got to figure out what is wrong with his shot. Good shooters don't shoot bad for an entire month.

The team as a whole, and Javi in particular looked very lethargic. At one point when Javi was slow keeping up with his man for 2-3 straight scores early, and barely moved on offense, I wondered if he was stoned or drunk. Horner brought some energy particularly on the boards, but most of the team was standing around way too much.

We had two things on Duke. An inside guy who could move that their oafs had no chance to defend. And when Zoubrick and Plumlee[s] were in the game at the same time, Horner presented a mismatch at the 4 because he could step outside.

If we play them again, I think we keep it close. It's just one of those rare good matchups for our team.

Honestly, guys. . i was at the Duke game.

we were making damn near every ill-advised shot possible, and Duke played HORRIFIC.

It was, in fact, a fluke. I enjoyed it immensely, don't get me wrong. . .but really. We were really, really fucking lucky that night. I kept commenting on how every bullshit shot we were throwing up was going in, and how Duke couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

More thoughts from the game:

- Davis was great offensively tonight. Tech's D forced him to be aggressive and he did a decent job at it. His D wasn't great, but that was more due to the matchups than his hustle.

- Painter did a nice job all around. On defensive his wingspan and athleticism are big assets. He also scored twice (that I recall) on post moves, which is a good sign for the future. I'd really like to see him log more minutes this season. To me he just as solid on D as V-berg but has the potential to contribute on offense too.

- Horner - does he matchup defensively with anyone? Seems like he's a liability no matter who he guards, and his offense wasn't picking up the slack either.

- Lowe is stuck with two bad options at the point right now. Mays' role is to give Javi a breather. Period. And it's not like Javi was playing well either.

- Next to Javi, Degand is the guy that needs to step up for this team to win any more games this season. He didn't just miss open looks - he air-mailed them, like "40 & up YMCA rec-league" style.

- Wood blamed himself after the game, but the truth is the guy hasn't had an open look in ages. I do not understand how a team can blanket both him and Smith at the same time.

- Give Tech credit, b/c they played an outstanding game.

3. the team didnt hit a single 3 pointer (0-11)

4. Dennis horner had the most rebounds on our team (bizarro world)

5. Tracy smith had 5 TOs (horner had 6, team had 15 total)

6. Painter played 9 min and had 4 pts and 4 rebounds

7. this is a recipe for failure

1-3 really really stand out to me

well 4 does too because horner has something like 19 rebounds through the first 9 ACC games

he's still got too much of a fucking personality, trying to be bigger than the calls.

example A: the VT offensive goaltending call he ran half way across the court and waved it off like 80 times. he has to call attention to himself.

He seemed to be very close with Sendek (I mean he pushed his son towards him at ASU), so it wouldn't surprise me if he holds a bit of a grudge against the fanbase for the way he was treated...

That's complete guessing, though. No evidence I've seen of that.

Because we have zero other decent options. Horner can occasionally hit a jumper, but Javi and Degand can barely get rim anymore. I wouldn't pay any attention to them either. Plus even when Wood got open, you could tell he had no confidence in his shot and would not take it.

It is amazing how horrible State has been since the Duke game. Really it is baffling. Matchups or not, we look worse than the Kenny Inge/Damon Thornton/Archie/Corn Dog teams from the crappy Herb years.
