ahahhah. I'm in my bedroom watching on my oldass tv and all I can see is the far right part of the score box. I just see inning and outs and the bases on SD I can see the full box when I switch it over to the HD channel.

there is supposed to be some kind of standard embedded in the broadcast from FOX that should automatically take the 16:9 HD feed and letterbox it for SD (widescreen)

if you are seeing the game through satellite or a cable box, WRAZ is supposed to be doing it for us... but they aren't.

whatever, I likelove it.

All Jon Miller wanted was a job where he could eat french fries while working. Isn't that just the most prescious thing you've heard?

This Cubs/Cards game feels like a playoff game... even though it's the Cubs.

I don't really know where to post this, but the FJM guys are going to be doing a little one-day Deadspin thing again this year. Sept. 22nd. Saw that on KT's twitter...

^ yeah, I remarked to my "Cards fan" roommate who was watching Big Brother ## last night that I don't like either team but it was a fantastic game...

Even with the Yanks pitching a little shaky these days they still keep on winning, and I can't believe there was even a question on who would be in the rotation Joba or Hughes.

Oh and Cano MVP

^ Cano for MVP? I don't think so. Hamilton or Cabrera deserve it more.

I saw that he tweaked his oblique last night on a routine catch. Just didn't realize they were going to DL him so quick.

Weird, Angels seem to be trying to load up like that have a legit shot

The TB/Yanks loser has the wildcard locked up, so they must think they can catch Texas

Any news on what the Angels were going to give up for Lee?

I assumed they'd be sellers by now after losing 3 of 4 to Texas but they really fleeced the DBacks in that Haren deal. If they can keep making deals like that they could keep "buying" right up to the deadline no matter how far back they fall.

Oswalt to Philly.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Phillies-could-get-Roy-Oswalt-and-still-keep-Jayson-Werth

This is the most reputable link but I've heard an update that says its pretty much it's on Oswalt now to waive the no-trade.

Happ is a guy who I always thought would regress. His peripherals are really not all that great. It's amazing that he has a 1.xx ERA so far this year, granted the sample is so small. A 1.6+ WHIP and a <1 K/BB. Even in just three games, it's hard to believe only a handful of runs scored. I mean guy is letting on upwards of two guys an inning and not striking anyone out.

/NL East

[Edited on July 29, 2010 at 9:22 AM. Reason : where is Philly getting this $ from? They are going to be near $160M now]

im curious as to the full details of the deal. looks like at least j.a. happ and jonathan singleton.. which i guess after resigning howard there's just no space for singleton.

idk.

singleton has raw potential.

Damn that is shitty news for us Braves and Mets fans. I fucking hate Philly. Here's hoping Oswalt turns into the next Nate McLouth and sucks ass in Philadelphia. I wish the Braves could spend $160M.

haha maybe for your guys!

Is Oswalt going to be pitching in relief? Because that's what the Phils actually needed. They should have gone after Myers, then they could just skip the pen altogether.

The stats I posted above were Oswalt versus the Braves and Mets all-time. These are his numbers against the current Braves and Mets:

vs. Braves: 97 PA, .322/.361/.500, 4 HR, 26 K, 5 BB
vs. Mets: 187 PA, .253/.308/.308, 2 HR, 32 K, 13 BB

At most, he's going to make 10 or 11 starts for the Phils and looking at the guys who have had the least success against him, very few are starters for the the Braves or Mets. They're also pretty hamstrung with that contract, even though Houston sent a couple mil with him.

Not worried much

The Astros are picking up like $11 M of the remaining $23 M on Oswalt's contract. That is a pretty good deal for the Phillies IMO. The Astros must really be desperate to suck.

Lance Berkman to Yanks apparently.

Why? I'm not sure. Are they just stockpiling $15M players now even though there are guys in front of them?

Posada is brittle too. Ideally you'd like to have him DH a few times a week and let Cervix catch.

True, but in the playoffs, they're going to have Berkman potentially hitting in the 7 hole

Thats just not fair

If I am interpretting that correctly, I don't understand how the twins got pwned...They traded a good defensive catcher, yes, but he is only batting .241 in AAA this year...and they already have Drew butera and MVP Joe Mauer for catchers...and Now that Duensing is a starter they need help in the bullpen. Not to mention they got cash...

posada at dh is stupid. you never start two catchers... what if the one in the C slot gets hurt?

If Joe Maddon is your manager you have to worry about mistakenly listing both Cervix and Posada as the C and forfeit the DH for the game...

^^and have your pitcher bat? why run that chance? and then, what if both of your catchers go down in the same game?

the primary purpose of the 2nd catcher is to give the starting catcher the day off and call a good game in his absence... and maybe hit .150 or so. posada at dh is a stupid idea. if he's a crip let him start a couple games at C in a week. otherwise what the hell is the point if he can't even play catcher anymore.

Once the DH moves to a defensive position, they forfeit the DH the rest of the game... but I'm not sure why we're arguing managerial logic, here consider that Girardi has used Posada as a DH tons of times and stated after his latest injury that he plans to use him as a DH regularly when Cervelli gets a game. This obviously changes with the arrival of Berkman in all likelihood.

In any case, the DH is a piece of shit and shouldn't be in the major leagues at all anyway. So fuck it.

"You don't have to forfeit the DH in that scenario. You can move the DH to the field and bring someone off the bench to bat. I still have no idea why you're bringing this up."

--Ernie

If you move the DH to the field, you lose the DH and now the pitcher is now hitting in the former DH hole. So if you bring "someone off the bench to bat" that "someone" has to be the pitcher on defense. So, after the PH, you'd have to bring in a RP (duh). You immediately revert to an NL-style lineup the moment you move the DH to the field. I guess you couldn't think this far ahead.

^it's true giradi has played posada 25 games at DH. it's a pretty poor stop-gap to the obvious problem... Posada is a far cry from a full-time major league catcher. I don't know why he's even still in the depth chart for C. posada is pretty much untradeable and undesirable to any other team at this point.
