I simultaneously love and hate the parry system... but it was pretty cool to see it again.

Which reminds me, anyone played SF3 Third Strike Online Edition? How is the online play?

I bought it, the online play is pretty damn good. It uses GGPO, which is supposedly the ultimate in online netcode, so I'm guessing that's as good as it gets. I suck at parrying so I haven't tried shit like parrying a whole super online.

One weird quirk is that the game uses "rollback", so sometimes it'll make the sound like you hit someone but the match will keep going like you didn't.

This guy explains GGPO if anyone's interested:

Rocket Raccoon - he seems pretty cool

Frank West - sounds kind of annoying, I think I prefer his Tatsunoko vs Capcom version

^Eh, Ken would be nice but he brings nothing new to the game

You play on 360? I've been picking it back up regularly to stay loose with Dr. Doom. I know for a fact he'll stay on the team along with Dr. Strange. The 3rd will either be Sentinel or someone new (possibly Nova) or maybe Spencer.

I just find Spencer to be lacking as an anchor with no assist to back him up. All you really have is Wire grapple/wire pull mixups and man are those pathetic. Bionic arm is alright though. <shrug>

Sorry, PS3 player.

Spencer's overhead combos pretty easily in X-Factor level 3. I've seen some major tournament comebacks with him

So has everyone else, which is probably why I'm getting stuffed. Getting to the overhead position against a Dante or a Wolverine (without a covering assist) is a task.

Several people have the full game now. Also, someone has uploaded pics of DLC alternate outfits for most of the cast, taken from the Brady guide. Most/All the Marvel side has alternates from various comic storylines:

Check out Zero's alternate, it's bound to piss off a few people:

Oh SHIT. Is that Udon's Taskmaster I see in there?! That's pretty awesome!

Scarlett Spider and 90's Jean Grey also look great.

According to this guy, the online netcode is much improved. In other words, what it should've been the first time around. Only a few people have the game at this point though, so who knows what it'll be like tomorrow.

Y'all will have to let me know if there are any other tournaments for this in the near future. I still wish I had gotten in on that one a few months back at Play & Trade.

Dr. Strange is pimp. Strange/Doom/Sentinel for life. Sent Drones were made for Strange's teleport.

Been neglecting this to play through Zelda. I was playing a lot of Vergil (like everyone else). Going to jump back into things in the next week or so.

Once I figured out that Vigil's move where he runs through you actually does cross you up mid-move and you have to start blocking the other way, he became a lot easier to deal with. SLLLLOOOOOWWWWW teleports. But he does have some long range normals with super easy hit-confirms just like Dante (and Ghost Rider )

Heroes and Heralds mode comes out next week. Capcom's been releasing details about it and it sounds like it'll be fun.

http://www.capcom-unity.com/marvelvscapcom/go/thread/view/102977/28773325/Heroes__Heralds_Ability_Card_list

^I've gotten soooo much mileage out of calling the Taskmaster arrow assist and teleporting behind people. Averaging about a 50% win rate with a ranking of 8th Lord.

Just started playing this yesterday. I have one thing to say.

HOLY SHIT, CAPTAIN AMERICA IS AWESOME NOW.

I cannot believe how much they improved him. I was exceedingly loyal to him in the first incarnation of this game, but now...! My God, what a change. The OTG shield slash, almost-invincible cartwheel, and high HP make him a real weapon now. I got my butt kicked for a few games while I tried to remember how to play this, but then I went on an 18-win streak. Taskmaster is still a complete badass, but now it looks like Deadpool is the weakest link on my team. I never really learned how to do much with him aside from playing keepaway...

Deadpool got some buffs too. You can cancel any of his special moves into his teleport. So you hit someone with guns, teleport, then launch right into an air combo.

Got my ass kicked on Heroes & Heralds for the most part and had 4 rage quitters the few times I was winning . It's mostly a silly mode, but it's still annoying.

^^ I will say a few things about this game which may either make or break your opinion of it. This is a game in which defense doesn't matter worth a shit. The main focus of this game is finding characters which go well together (known as synergy) to create ridiculous combos which they can string together - either as the current fighter or as assist characters - and just wail on an opponent relentlessly. If you know a truly good combo (which deals out 80% or greater damage, bottom end) with even one character, then you're off to a good start. There are very few opportunities to break a good combo (e.g. at the start of an aerial exchange), so if you are up against someone who has learned how to string together something massive, then you're pretty much completely hosed if you mess up one time since they can take advantage of that one screwup and just ride you into the pavement. Playing keepaway is not always a reliable option either since it seems like every other character in the game has a teleport move.

I have a serious like/hate (definitely not love) relationship with this game because while I enjoy its visuals and diverse roster (Deadpool and Taskmaster together, hell yes!), I really find the combat mechanics a little too tilted in favor of offense and not remotely enough in defensive options. X-Factor is still a big steaming pile of bullshit to me, and whomever thought this up should never be allowed to work in the industry ever again. Even with its simplified control scheme, this game is astonishingly deep in the combo department. I don't always fare well in this game mainly because I don't particularly care about synergy, though. I want to play as Captain America, Deadpool, and Taskmaster, and they don't especially have the best synergy with each other (although I am seeing some new possibilities which didn't exist in the last version of this game). I have yet to play as any other character in this game.

Several of the tips of the hat in the visuals are pretty cool. You get a gold star if you have spotted the Damage Control poster in the City That Never Sleeps stage and you actually know what it's a reference to.

Well, it's pretty much been a button mashing fest any time I play, with a very rudimentary understanding of the controls.

Even when I do Mission Mode, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Should I just walk away now?

If you're having fun, just stick with it. You're going to get your ass handed to you if you take it online though.

Are the missions beneficial?

Or would I be better off learning from a guide of some sort?

^^ seconded

I suck at fighting games. I just know the super moves and MAYBE a few hit combo (which this game makes easy). I just play with other people who like to jump around and spam super moves and simple combos...that's fine.

at the end of the day i have fun playing with the huge roster so why stress?

They put out a great guide for MvC3 and I hear the new one is just as good. Both of them are MASSIVE, like at least eight pages of tips and strategies per character. Be prepared for a deluge of information if you're a fighting game newbie. They have a glossary of terms in there, but you're probably going to find yourself zoning out before you read them all.

Mission mode is eh. It'll teach you one or two useful combos then a bunch of them that you'll likely screw up in a middle of match. You won't learn how to open up the other person (in other words, land the first hit to start your combo) and you definitely won't learn which moves are best for a given situation.

An alternative is to browse http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?forums/ultimate-marvel-vs-capcom-3.53/

They have character specific forums where people off up their combos and tactics. I wouldn't recommend posting there until you've spent a loooonnnnng time reading to get the lay of the land.
